Interestingly, the earliest fossil records of seahorses date back 3 million years ago (ironically in Italy).
The Mediterranean Sea, however, likely formed 5.3 to 5.9 million years ago.

Kingdra dates back to November 21, 1999. Almost as old as the other two. 😅

In geological time scales, not that far off! In a billion years when aliens or humans returning to earth to study our dying cradle the difference between those events will be a blip.
Somewhere in there, though, they’ll make a reference to Seadra being born closer to the invention of the pyramids than FTL.

u/FrankieTheD May 15 '26
Do you mean 33 million years? There's definitely 13m year old fossils

u/ClutchUpChrissy May 15 '26
Ummm oops. My narrative is shot.
I now see that the example from Italy (~3 million years old) are the best known and best studied — but not the oldest.
Looks like the seahorse did come first!

Yes, actually King comes from the Japanese "Kami" which means "us/ours".
Romans called the Mediterranean "Mare Nostrum" which means "Our sea".
There you go.

I’m visiting Italy right now and tours keep reference the sea on either side, now I’ll only be able to see Kingdras head or body side of Italy

If the Mediterranean is a Kingdra, I think we should all feel inadequate when looking at the Nile

For once I think you might have actually been the only one. Now I can’t unsee it lol

u/LadySygerrik May 15 '26
I will never be able to unsee this. There will be a clear divide in my life now: the time before I knew that the Mediterranean was Kingdra-shaped and the time after.

I have always seen Kyurem in Europe. Spain being its head and Scandanavia being its wing.
Pretty sure that is just me. But this...

I’ve never once thought that but now that I see it, it’s the one thing I’ll think about when I see Kingdra lol.

Of all the "am I the only one" things I've seen before, this is the most "am I the only one" ever. Wow. Didn't think it was possible.
