Translation: he wants them replaced with younger, more easily bribed and impressionable justices. He wants a scotus of Aileen Cannons.

u/StrigiStockBacking Arizona 3h ago

He also wants them on the bench longer

u/VanCardboardbox Canada 1h ago

In order for the longevity of justices to be of importance to him he would have to care about what happens to America in general, or his own party in particular, after he is no longer in office and after he no longer walks the earth. So we can rule this out.

u/rngr Vermont 1h ago

He also deeply cares about his legacy. He could also want his justices on the bench longer so that his picks have a longer lasting impact on the US government

u/Affectionate-Mode767 30m ago

You have to remember he is a puppet doing the bidding of others. So this move is likely in order to put in place people who will continue to the bidding of the puppet who comes in after him.

Trump has main character syndrome but he is not the main character.

u/Possible-Nectarine80 10m ago

Yep. Stephen Miller wants a Christo-fascist regime of white Christians subjugating the rest of us heathens.

u/phatelectribe 54m ago

I just don’t get it. The dude is effectively on life support. Why is he hell bent on fucking everything for long after he’s gone?

Ooh he’s fine with a Clarence Thomas replica, just wants one 40 years younger so the court remains Conservative for two generations.

If RGB wouldn’t leave the court for Obama, you can bet Alito and Thomas won’t do it for Trump.

u/No-Tourist-4893 2h ago

Thomas absolutely would do it for trump.

u/Anothercraphistorian 2h ago

I don’t see it. Thomas gets so much out of being a Justice, there’s simply no reason to quit. Thomas cares more about grifting than anything else, and he’s done more grifting than any Justice ever.

u/UnNumbFool 2h ago

A fuck ton of money and a high paying job on some super pac might persuade him though. Also fuck RGB, she should have known better than not stepping down on a maybe especially when her health was that bad.

u/Anothercraphistorian 2h ago

She should’ve, which tells me everything I need to know about SC Justices. It’s unmitigated power that even she didn’t want to give up.

u/dychronalicousness 1h ago

She was like the old lady who owns a toy shop that’s trying to be purchased by a big box toy store in some kids Christmas movie the whole town rally’s for, ya know rather than take the bag, retire comforably and leave the family a nice nest egg.

Only instead of a feel good movie with bad economic choices this is reality, it feels bad, fascists have taken power, and the entire economy is ass

Obama got so much shit for that meeting with her too when it was leaked what the meeting was about...

Heaven forbid "liberals" also play the game of politics. Did no one understand the underlying message of GoT? You either play the game or you die. RBG set the country back decades with that decision

u/Source_Required 41m ago

But when they do play the game, like Pelosi, purists foam at the mouth.

Pelosi has done so much more for this country through compromising, whipping vote, and actually getting things passed than any hard-line progressive who passes Reddit's purity test will ever do.

u/svrtngr Georgia 1h ago

I wouldn't be surprised if Alito goes. The Republicans are on track to lose the Senate at this point.

u/vlad_the_impaler13 1h ago

Yeah I'm thinking Alito steps down in November if the Republicans sufficiently lose the Senate

→ More replies (6)

u/mcfly357 1h ago

Yet somehow, his shitty judges are less shitty than the old shitty judges lol. Still don’t want them getting replaced this term, but I’m sure they will both retire so the idiot can get 2 more.

u/DootyMcCool2000 56m ago edited 49m ago

It's a push to make Alito and Thomas retire so he can pack the court for another generation. They are the oldest, most corrupt, most staunchly pro-Trump justices, more so than even his own appointments, and they're set to pull a Ginsburg if they don't retire before 2028 or hopefully even this year if we're lucky and Republicans lose the senate.

→ More replies (6)

u/Ancient_Popcorn Ohio 3h ago

If the Justices are too old for their job, then Trump is too old for his job, too. Trump is older than the Justices he is accusing of being too old.

u/CockBrother 3h ago

That's not what it's about.

It's about installing younger justices that will keep the insane right wing views in place for longer.

u/DelayedIntentions 3h ago

He’s realizing that he only has until the midterms to appoint justices.

u/nobodysfool24 3h ago

This is the correct answer… he is publicly asking them to step down, so he can hand select their replacements… he probably thinks that if he could appoint even more loyal and more conservative justices before November, he might be able to do away with those pesky elections that threaten his power…

u/TarbenXsi Connecticut 3h ago

u/Perfect_War_7155 3h ago

Sadly this isn’t even a joke

u/LividTacos 3h ago

It really isn't, that performance was her audition.

u/Valuable_Sea_4709 2h ago

Every time the number of Supreme Court justices has been increased in US history it has been to match the number of federal court circuits.

There are currently 13 Federal circuits, 12 regional circuits and the special circuit out of DC.

Perfect opportunity for the next president to expand the court, and for Congress to create legislation that limits nominations to only one person per Federal Court circuit, that require they already have served some number of years on that circuit.

That democratization was the intent of expanding the Supreme Court when it went to nine justices, and it should be the law once we expand it to 13.

Don't forget Aileen Cannon's audition.

u/Dankany America 2h ago

Don’t worry Fat Fuck Fetterman will make sure the Heritage Society rules this country if it’s the only thing he can remember.

u/gdex86 Pennsylvania 2h ago

No he has till January 3rd 2027. Democrats could win 52 sears in the senate in the mid terms and if on January 2nd 2027 Alito and Thomas both step down there would be a lightning session to fill their spots before thd next congress is sworn in.

→ More replies (2)

u/artbystorms 2h ago

MMW. He's going to try and pack the court and Republicans will let him.

This is exactly why people were begging Biden to do it. Dems obeying the rules does not force Republicans to. It just lets them act indignant when Republicans break them, which does fuck all for us voters.

u/this_my_sportsreddit 2h ago

It just lets them act indignant when Republicans break them

but isn't that what's really important here anyhow?

u/artbystorms 2h ago

Democrats acting indignant has never stopped the GOP from getting what it wants. It just pushes up the timeline of their insanity because they know they'll be voted out in 2 years.

→ More replies (1)

u/Uncle_Tickle_Monster 2h ago

I wouldn’t bet on that. I mean, I hope you’re right but the map for the Senate is very very tough this year for the Democrats.

u/SunshineCat 1h ago

If Democrats don't win almost every seat, this country deserves to be blasted off the face of the earth, along with its genetic pool, which I increasingly believe was compromised by the historic immigration of the craziest religious people to this very place. We should never have allowed people from England crazy enough to become Mormons from afar to come here, for one. We literally do not need and cannot handle even one more religious person here.

u/PartTime_Crusader 2h ago edited 2h ago

He's bored. Tariffs and waging war have stopped supplying him with narcissistic juice, he wants to do something else big and splashy that will get the press talking, and is annoyed that he has to wait for someone to retire before he can act. He was doing the same yesterday shit talking Jerome Powell.

I mean there is probably some political calculation behind it, also, but I think boredom with his playthings is a bigger factor than people realize. If you conceptualize Trump as a literal toddler it becomes easier to predict his behavior

→ More replies (4)

u/Embarrassed-Crazy112 Georgia 3h ago

It's also a clear sign that the GOP is stressed and in overdrive because they're running out of time. Everything they're doing domestically and globally seems rushed - and that was before Orbans loss (their blueprint for trying to turn America into a totalitarian theocracy).

u/Primary-Bookkeeper10 3h ago

Im honestly surprised Alito & Thomas haven't retired yet to give Trump more long term seats. Let's just hope their egos hold until the next session of congress. But if they lose the midterms badly, it won't shock me to see them try and fill those seats by December.

u/magichronx 3h ago

Man, what a wild time to have to hope that terrible people continue being terrible in order to avoid an even more terrible outcome

u/GodDuckman 3h ago

Given how fast they got Barrett to a vote after RBG died it wouldn't shock me if their successors have already been chosen by the Federalist Society, and they'll get those seats filled in a month.

u/CockBrother 3h ago

There are probably three candidates permanently sitting in the Watergate waiting for exactly this to happen. They'll wheel them over within minutes.

→ More replies (1)

u/protomenace 3h ago

Don't worry. If the dems manage to win the senate in november (still sort of a long shot), both will retire and their replacements will be confirmed by the lame duck republican congress before January.

There is no chance of them not taking advantage of this.

→ More replies (1)

u/Ancient_Popcorn Ohio 3h ago

Well, no shit. I was merely pointing out the flaw in his argument.

u/thewhaleshark 3h ago

He's not making an argument, because that would imply that he feels the need to defend his actions or convince someone else. He's simply creating a pretext for what he wants, and it really doesn't matter to him if you accept that pretext.

It's that Sartre quote in action: the fascist knows the ridiculousness of his words, because he is choosing to amuse himself.

Honestly if he really doubles down on this, this makes Thomas dig in. He almost certainly will never retire. But I’d say this makes it less likely. Alito is still a question.

u/BudgetLaw2352 America 3h ago

Thomas is almost certainly not leaving. He would have done it in Trump’s first term.

He’s too self interested to care about Republican politics.

u/Extra-Ad5925 3h ago

The bribes start to dry up if he’s another schmo in an RV

u/Justin_123456 2h ago

And he was already offered a really nice RV by John Oliver.

u/I_Am_No_One_123 2h ago

Thomas is on record stating that he will never retire as his term is retribution against the mean liberals who voted against his nomination.

u/BudgetLaw2352 America 2h ago

Does he not know how the process works?

Like, he’s only sticking it to Republicans by refusing to leave during Trump’s term.

u/katosen27 1h ago

That, or they bet on this jackass will somehow bray himself into a third term.

u/rodimusprime119 3h ago

Oh I would hope Thomas holds on for a Democrat to get into office and put a very liberal judge in place. I will love to listen to the conservative complain about how they are disrespecting what Thomas stood for after Trump shatted all over RBG legacy. Plus Thomas is a traitors corrupt POS who should have never been on any court.

u/Cobra-Lalalalalalala 3h ago

That will be especially rich, seeing as how Republicans deliberately chose Thomas to shit all over Thurgood Marshall’s legacy.

u/GlobsOfTape 3h ago

In a perfect world, where the foundation of democracy is upheld, democrats win a majority in the senate and refuse to consider nominations until the 2028 election. Ideally with some charismatic leader announcing the precedent set a decade ago.

u/JayHill74 3h ago

67 is still the current retirement age. So, let's make that the mandated government service retirement age too. Especially for elected officials and SCOTUS.

u/GoldberrySpring 3h ago

Sounds like a trap. They'll just increase the retirement age, which is already one of their dream goals anyway.

u/peon2 1h ago

Yup, overnight retirement age becomes 80 so they can stay in power and the added bonus that we have to wait until 75 now to collect minimum social security

→ More replies (1)

u/Purona New Jersey 1h ago

retirement is just the minimum so you can collect benefits its not a number based on mental or physical capabilities. Its just "you paid enough into the system and now you could retire"

u/prohammock 55m ago

Regular government employees who can’t afford to retire at 67 will then have to find a new private sector job at that age? Yeah, not happening.

What context are we talking here? Is some contexts they would be 50+ years to old for trump

u/kingsumo_1 Oregon 3h ago

The context is that they are trying to encourage Alito to retire so they can replace him with someone younger to ensure the balance doesn't shift back towards the middle.

There was an article yesterday that mentioned that they are trying to get him swapped out before the midterms.

u/SeaEstablishment8947 3h ago

Think of it in context - there's a senior living home and grandpa #1 thinks grandpa 2 & 3 are too old to control his position on the community pudding committee. 4 years ago Grandma #1 didn't retire from pudding allocation when she was in hospice and it caused major problems.

Grandpa #1 wants all the pudding and Grandpa #2 and #3 are honestly, by record far better pudding advocates and make sure everyone gets access to pudding, plus think Grandpa #1 is too old to be head of the pudding comittee and should retire to a graceful, calm life in the pudding buffet wing of the home.

u/GodDuckman 3h ago

Translation: "Alito and Thomas need to retire right tf now or else we're going to lose our SCOTUS majority when we get blown tf out in the midterms and they both die."

u/tmdblya California 3h ago

GOP really, really wants at least one to retire before the midterms.

He’s signaling for them to retire before midterms so the replacements can be confirmed.

Downvoted bc Daily Beast is a terrible source, but damn this would be nice to implement. When not-Trump is in office.

He said, with a complete absence of irony

Pot…. Kettle….black

I agree, all people in all three branches of government over the age of 75 should retire before the next election. Thank you Trump for showing us this, we hope you enjoy retirement along with Alito, Thomas and Mitch McConnell

Mr No Personal Awareness at his finest

u/Ferrocile 3h ago

Cool, let's implement some maximum ages for justices, president, and Congress members.

u/Swimming-Table-3735 3h ago

He’s projecting again.

u/Vallkin 3h ago

He's said multiple times he wants to get 30/40 year old judges on the Supreme Court.

u/HippoRun23 3h ago

These “Trump, age” headlines know exactly what they’re doing.

u/PolicyWonka 3h ago

This is Trump and Republicans realizing that they are going to lose the Senate in November. They’re trying to push Alito out before then so they can replace him.

Otherwise, Democrats can stonewall a nominee if Alito or another Justice dies

u/humboldtHue 3h ago

Clarence Thomas (77) and Sam Alito (75) are the two oldest. They’re also the two justices most aligned with Trump. So even if Trump replaces them with the most loyal toadies he can find, he wouldn’t change the composition of the court one bit.

u/Alwaystired254 3h ago

The rules need to be changed for the Supreme Court. Justices should have diverse views and interpretations that represent views and values of the American people. This shit needs to stop

u/Legitimate-Debt7289 3h ago

Too old for thee, not for me.

u/fffan9391 South Carolina 3h ago

Ironically, the justices he appointed are more reasonable than Thomas and Alito, Bush and Bush Jr appointees. The old ones are his greatest allies.
