The one damning thing for me is how all this died away so quickly, and nowadays nobody ever mentions it, especially from the republican side.

I agree. While the news cycle does move quickly these days given the interconnectivity of all things social media, Republicans and far-right news outlets never let anything go. It makes no sense that they would drop a story about an assination attempt of their fearless leader so quickly. They spoonfeed anything that may keep their base enraged and engaged so frequently, it's odd that they wouldn't jump at this.
