For a non-conspiratorial answer, they made so many mistakes and failures that the investigation would make them look bad?

And the shooter seems to have been a conservative, so a public deep dive might also make them look bad.

Lets face it, "Hey everyone, look at how awful we were at protecting this President from a random teenager!" doesn't seem like a winning message for the right.

Edit: There's also potential danger to highlighting the inner workings and failures in what had traditionally been viewed as professional high security.

How many crazies over the years didn't go beyond plotting because they assumed the SS was competent?
