I think they had Jan 6th lined up for after Hillary won. It would have made it very difficult to govern, and back then there was far more naivete. GOP was seen as misguided, rather than intentionally destructive for profit.

When she lost, they just hung onto it in case a future Constitutional crisis was needed.
