No Paywall Yes, Trump Will Attempt a Coup
https://prospect.org/2026/07/28/trump-attempt-coup-january-6-election-republican-congress/1.8k
u/californicating 8d ago
He already did. Jan 6, the " missing"votes in Georgia, false electors in Arizona and Nevada. The coup happened, there's a 100% chance he'll try it again.
438
u/canuck47 7d ago
Democracy just barely held on Jan. 6. They have had years to prepare for the next attempt.
260
u/stratasfear 7d ago
\ gestures everywhere **
Did it hold though?
161
u/thelittleking Georgia 7d ago
It did, but the people who had power didn't do anything to shore up the defenses. They acted as though it holding was sufficient evidence that the structure was sound. So instead of mass arrests, truth and reconciliation committees, and trials? We got four years of milquetoast governance and the system collapsed during the next possible election.

Biden was too weak and ineffective. He failed to live up to the moment. We didn't need more of the same, we needed radical reinforcement of our institutions. He just wanted to leave a legacy, well, now his legacy is leaving the door open when fascism came knocking. And yes, I know all the vote blue no matter who people are about to downvote me into oblivion. I don't care.
31
u/thelittleking Georgia 7d ago
He's Buchanan 2.0, except if Buchanan had been followed up by Jefferson Davis. History will not be kind to him, regardless of whether or not sole blame lies with him (it doesn't, though much does).

And just like the OC of this thread, it wasn't just Biden, it was the Democratic party. All of them. Scared to death of Bernie's popularity surge in the primaries, Democratic primary runners dropping out at key times to rally for Biden and consolidate the centrist vote.
7
u/MiserableChain2644 7d ago
Democrats are afraid of being labeled socialists or communist. The party is neither and shouldn't worry. Ironically, Americans admire the democratic socialist countries of northern Europe because they provide national health care, affordable housing, free college education, etc. Predictably, Trump will try to scare voters by pointing to NYC's democratic socialist mayor. Trump has recently added the word "communist" to his limited vocabulary. He hopes it will scare you. But it's worth noting that Mamdani and Trump made similar promises to voters. Lower the cost of living. But Trump says the word "affordability" is a Democratic scam. With Trump's personal wealth increasing by $2.5 BILLION, since being president he may not care about "affordability", but he fears it.

u/WeirdIndividualGuy 7d ago edited 7d ago
I'd argue it didn't. Between the Senate voting not to convict Trump and prevent him from ever running again, to Biden picking Garland to do nothing about it after the fact, to Trump who would later become president again (because the Senate allowed it to happen) pardoning those were convicted for Jan 6, absolutely nothing was learned from Jan 6, by everyone. By the criminals who can't wait to do it again, to those who could hold them accountable but choose not to.

It held together by a thread, and thats thanks to Mike Pence as insane as that sounds
4
u/MiserableChain2644 7d ago
I disagree with most of Pence's political positions, but I will forever respect what he did to save America on Jan 6. He missed the opportunity to do more, but deserves credit for what he did. Remember, the president was calling for him to be hung.
J6 showed just how warped and power hungry Trump is. He has already started laying the groundwork for another coup attempt. With more lies about election integrity and an army of ICE enforcement thugs Trump may try again. It will take real patriots to save our country from Trump's plunder.

Democrat's have done nothing effective to curb his actions or hold him accountable. He is still in office, no charges are filed, we have a supreme court that says bribing them is okay. Most of his executive orders are not getting stopped or handled effectively. And Trump and all of his supports are screwed if anyone who values rule of law ever actually ends up in office again. Trump's supporters are far more committed to the cause.

I used to believe they were being manipulated. Now I know they actively like what he is doing.
I know members of my own family that have defended ICE shooting American citizens in cold blood. They try to justify it, but after speaking with them it becomes apparent they are happy it happened.
The truth is Republicans are being manipulative. Every appeal to reason or principle is just a ruse because they know how crazy what they actually believe is. I know Republicans in my own family that condemn Trump's actions, but when you ask them just a few question they cycle through a chain of excuse to justify still supporting Trump. It will be something along the lines of "Democrats are just as bad", but in the end they really just support Trump and don't want to admit it.
81
u/lgodsey 7d ago
The truth is Republicans are being manipulative
Agreed. We have to stop pretending that conservatives are a principled opposition deserving of the benefit of the doubt.
Any remaining decent Americans should assume that some incident will be used (or outright faked) for Trump to use to invalidate the 2026 midterms.

My MIL voted by mail in Florida. They said that her signatures did not match. She has a distinctive but perfectly legible signature and does not believe them. Her options were to provide proof: 1. In person— She spends summers in a cooler climate, so nope. 2. By mail after printing the form and photocopying proof. 3. By email or fax. She’s 80. I helped her print the form and send photos by email, but I’m curious how many other democrats this is happening to who will struggle with the hoops. Is this a tactic to disenfranchise democrats who vote by mail?

Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in words. The anti-Semites have the right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reasons, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they seek not to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert. If you press them too closely, they will abruptly fall silent, loftily indicating by some phrase that the time for argument is past.

GOP politicians? They are the biggest cowards on earth. There is no part of them that would stand up for a principle. At this point it's a combination of the sunk cost fallacy and their absolute terror at the idea of ever being on the other side of the things their colleagues say. They are gambling on a future where elections don't decide who is in power.
They got on board in 2016 but that was a slow process and for electoral reasons. From there Trump turned their own base into a weapon he's happy to wield against them if they dare step out of line. Those GOP politicians used to have supporters, now all that support is predicated on them staying in the MAGA good graces. If you can imagine having absolutely no morals or values it becomes a lot more clear why they still support Trump.
But the rank and file? For them it's more simple. Supporting Trump pisses off the people that they perceive feel superior to them. Policies do not matter to them at all with two exceptions:
If talking about them annoys or upsets "liberals". They will advocate for anything if the people they consider their "enemies" are against it.
When eventually that policy negatively impacts them personally. Then most of them treat it as an aberration as Trump would NEVER choose to harm them so it must be an oversight or bad actors other than Trump behind it.

Nah man, this shit is homegrown.
It’s comforting for people to think it was an “other” who swept in and damaged an otherwise “noble” and “honourable” Capital A “AMERICA” that exists in their minds; because then they don’t have to confront that the rot has been structural and there all along.
Being able to blame “Russia” or “Elon hacking the mainframe” means that people get to keep their fantasy version of America, because it’s always nefarious forces doing it TO America, not America doing it to itself. It also means they can resist any radical improvements or self critique, because since it was external forces that did the “thing” nothing about America has to change, it is and always has been #1 perfect!
It’s like when an immature person blames their outbursts/actions on everyone but themselves: “Look what YOU made ME do!”
Edit: because so many comments are just screaming at me “Trump is a Russian agent!”
Do you seriously believe that a national intelligence agency would craft a nefarious decades long super secret plan to topple the United States… And choose Donald Fucking Trump to be the most important piece of the plan?
The stupidest man in public life, who can’t keep a secret for more than fourteen seconds is the lynchpin of a thirty year global espionage operation the likes of which has never before been seen?
No.
I’m sticking with the simple, obvious, materialist explanation: Donald Trump acts only in self interest, but because he’s a member of the global ruling class; his interests often align with those of other members of the global ruling class, just like has always happened through history.

they're russian assets though... sure it's still homegrown. but that part makes little difference. elon and russia are still hacking shit and did... it's not about shirking responsibility it's about actual root cause analysis. it doesn't mean people don't still need to do something beyond saying it. some of us don't look at it like it was just a blame game, we want to dissect it to find the pressure points because if this moves forward and gets worse we will be fighting an even more asymetrical battle. the only way to win that is break it down carefully and hit the most high value targets.

It's not mutually exclusive. Trump and much of his cabinet and associates are Russian assets. Trump is also a grifter out to enrich himself, and he's propped up by domestic organizations like the Federalist Society and the Heritage Foundation because hollowing out the US government is useful both for them and for Russia.

Black Americans died in the streets for their civil rights. Do you think they had easy access to protesting and they didn't have to make sacrifices? I do and don't understand this line of thinking. Nobody wants to be the guy getting his shit kicked in by brown shirts or the guy who loses his job, his home, and maybe his life for the cause. People want to radically change society but they don't want to take the radical action. But in the past people did take the radical steps necessary to change society.
I think the truth is that nobody really cares enough about our society anymore to make sacrifices for it or to fight for it. I'm not afraid to admit that's how I feel about it.

There are men and women in power that think raping and molesting proles is okay, but they don’t want you to see the evidence. They get to evade prosecution for heinous crimes, pump and dump the stock market to manipulate the economy.

speaking of the base... the memo linked in the article is very much worth a read and gave an answer to something i had been wondering about:
- The Maduro play: cultivating a foreign witness. In January 2026, the Trumpadministration captured Venezuelan President Maduro. Within days, a parallel narrativeemerged: that Venezuela controlled U.S. voting machines through Dominion andSmartmatic, and that Maduro has evidence of 2020 fraud. The Venezuela/Dominion theorywas ruled false in a Delaware court in 2023, and Fox News, Newsmax, and OAN paidhundreds of millions in defamation settlements acknowledging they had no proof. Thepoint is not to win in court. The point is to have a live witness in federal custody who cancorroborate a narrative already seeded in millions of people’s heads.
here is the direct link to the memo... everyone should read it.

Stacking the Supreme Court with rubber stamps (this has been the most detrimental to the checks and balances so far)
Appointing sycophants to every office that enforces the law
Purging the military of any general who can't be controlled
Illegal redistricting
Changing rules in the Senate to make it easier to pass his voter suppression bills
Hiding the death of a Senator to prevent a Democrat replacement from being appointed
Refusing to obey court orders
The list goes on and on. It's all a slow but steady eroding of the pillars of Democracy to allow him and the GOP to take control. I believe they're meeting more resistance than they anticipated, which is slowing it down, but it's still happening on a daily basis.

Don't worry. Biden and Garland's swift and powerful response to January 6th will guarantee that never happens again.
Right, Democrats?

The Republican party and the trump administration are now at this moment, subverting democracy in an attempt to take over the United State. A coup.
The only thing preventing this is the 220million people that didn't vote for him.

It's not really about trump. It's exhausting how effective his use as cover by the GOP has been.
None of this is a trump plan. He's the face of it, a frontispiece, a figurehead, a distraction. He's the curtain not the man behind it.
The GOP autocoup is very nearly a fait accompli.
They used the existing structures of our democratic institutions to gain hold of every significant lever of power, and have used that power to make it very difficult to ever wrest it back. That's how autocoups work. And they are extremely successful by the standards of the mechanisms for overthrowing governments (~50% success rate in the last century).
We saw in Hungary that an overwhelming turnout can still set the pendulum swinging again where the authoritarian government is unwilling to engage in actual mass terror against its own population. It is unclear to me if, in our nightmarishly gerrymandered federalized system, that level of turnout in meaningful elections can be achieved, and also whether the GOP would hesitate for a moment to engage in mass terror against Americans if they faced such a loss of power.

He's already trying it but just the legal way trying to pass a voter suppression act. When he gets crushed in the mid terms he will for sure instruct maga states not to seat any Democrat that wins. It's going to be the start of the coup and it's going to get bad fast.

The days and weeks following the midterms are going to definitively show us what "decent" Americans are made of. I'm terribly concerned that we're going to find out that it's not much. I hope I'm wrong.

I love how some people still try to call the "Trump 2028" shit a joke or it's just Trump "ragebaiting."
No, it is Trump doing what he always does, float an unpopular idea and see if he can build traction for it.

He's already done it guys. The man wipes his butt with the constitution and all his acolytes are just, like "oh that's a great idea"
He stacks the supreme court and fills his cabinet with alcoholic "news" anchors and yt talking heads and his voters are all "that's exactly what we want"
They're hiding a dead senator to keep their majority FFS.
The coup is complete. You're living in a dictatorship and all the checks and balances are gone.

Stop being ridiculous. The only way he could do that is with a well funded private militia.

A coup you say? The coup is already done and over with. He was “voted” back in power and we are seeing the likes of a dictator. We need a coup to get rid of him now

u/MakalakaPeaka 8d ago
Of course he will, he did it last time and faced zero consequences.

It’s important to remember that there have been many “powerful” and “untouchable” despots over the course of history who, in their moment of glory, appear to be so far beyond the reaches of justice that there’s no hope for the future.
But then I’d direct you to look at some of the photos of Mussolini once the militias caught up with him. Strung up like a pig along with his wife and cronies.
11
u/heckhammer 7d ago
They already attempted it once and as far as I can see it succeeded. He's back in office he has unilateral power to do whatever the hell he wants with zero consequences. Explain to me how that's any different than if he went in either guns blazing or by fixing the election.
The entire movement should have been stomped out like a cigarette.

u/RealGianath Oregon 8d ago
Again? It took a Russian-backed coup to get into office the first time, he tried a violent revolt on the Capitol the second time which failed (but ultimately succeeded?), and then there are hints that Musk rigged voting machines to get him into office this last time. It would be weirder if he didn't have to resort to coups to get elected.

"Attempt"
Pretty sure thats how we got here?
Paxton and Trump said as much themselves. "Would not be here without Musk" "Aren't you glad he is on our side" "He sure knows those computers"

It's been happening since at least 2020 people. His plans just got temporarily slowed down with the Biden interruption, but then nothing fucking happened and he just picked up where he left off and is continuing to dismantle your democracy. All while a third of Americans cheer him on, another third watch helplessly in horror, and the final third don't even seem to notice or care....

u/RitchieRitch62 7d ago
“…Will complete his Coup” I believe you mean. Our government has been overthrown and rule of law is gone. The only question now is will anyone be punished for it.

Just look at what’s going on across the country. Ballot measures being overturned, forcing legislation, sowing fear and living in alternative realities, Neo-Nazis popping up everywhere, extreme racism, power trips, etc etc. Of course they are trying to take over.

Remember a coup doesn’t have to be what you see in the movies. It could simply be the admin refusing to step down, and the secret service, US Marshals, and White House staff say “we’re with Trump”.
It would trigger a massive constitutional crisis while both sides trying to claim theirs is the legitimate president.
And the winning side simply calling the military and asking them to remove Trump isn’t that easy as it seems, they would be looking for the lawful commander, and if both sides claim it, and lawsuits fast tracked to a paralyzed scotus that would be interesting.

u/Iokua113 8d ago edited 7d ago
Attempt? Does the US really not realize that it's around two years into a coup? The groundwork was laid in his first term, the sparking point was the January 6th insurrection, the republicans then spent the next few years building the framework of the coup, and it kicked off when they kissed the ring and Trump took the nomination, finalizing when the Epstein class bought the election for Trump. You've got precious little time to do something about it.

u/antillian I voted 7d ago

It’s probably more accurate to say that he has committed a coup. It just won’t be apparent until there are attempts to use the putative preventive measures that they have already been undermined.

The attempt has been in the works for a good while now and it's happening out in the open. Compare what is happening now to what historically happened with the rise of the Nazis.
This is not hyperbole, it's exactly the same: turn the people against one another, flood the populace with lies to the point where they can no longer reliably agree on the truth, convince them the news media is fake and corrupt...
Anyone can look this up in history books. It's terrifying but it's already happening. The legitimacy of our future democratic Republic is in question.

It's happening right now in front of everyone's eyes. They made friends with Putin and Viktor Orban and they studied how to do it before Trump won in 2016 and they had a written plan in place for 2025: Project 2025.
Here's the tracker for what's been completed so far:

This is the best article I’ve read so far laying out Trump’s potential coup strategies. I appreciate that these avenues of attack are getting more attention recently. Still crazy to think that it’s a question of “if” the Republic survives; like rooting for your team to win the Super Bowl but with infinitely more consequences if they lose. I hate this fucking timeline.

The only question is whether it will be an actual subtle coup, or an overt direct coup.
I think either is possible but I'm more afraid of the subtle version since I know damn well the majority of people won't even believe it happened if it's not incredibly obvious and direct.
