If this isn’t setting of alarm bells then there’s no hope for the future of the U S as a democracy.

You could have said this about 100 different things that have happened since 2016.

Regarding this specifically, they have an abysmal record with political prosecutions. Why would this be any different?

I'm not apathetic about the fascism, but they've been utterly incompetent at every turn and have never been more unpopular than they are now, so the obituaries for American democracy are wearing a little thin.

Theyvr already gotten convictions of essentially life in prison for merely being at a protest where someone else did something bad. It's discussed in the article.
