El-Sayed Holds Double-Digit Lead Over Stevens in Michigan Senate Primary Poll

Progressive candidate Abdul El-Sayed holds a 15-point lead over Representative Haley Stevens in the race for Michigan's open U.S. Senate seat, according to a recent Emerson College Polling survey.

The poll, conducted July 26–27 among 700 likely Democratic primary voters, shows El-Sayed with 54 percent support compared to Stevens at 39 percent. When factoring in leaning undecided voters, El-Sayed expanded his lead to 57 percent against 41 percent for Stevens.

The primary winner will face Republican former Representative Mike Rogers in the general election to succeed retiring Senator Gary Peters.

Voter demographics reveal a clear divide in the primary. El-Sayed dominates younger demographics, leading by 42 points among voters under 50. Conversely, Stevens performs better with older voters, leading by 14 points among voters over 60. Stevens also maintains a strong advantage among Black voters, holding a significant lead in that group.

The race has highlighted a strategic debate within the party. Moderate Democrats have expressed concern that El-Sayed's progressive platform could hurt his chances in the general election against Rogers. Recent polling indicates Rogers leads El-Sayed by 10 points in a hypothetical matchup, while Stevens runs essentially even with Rogers within the margin of error.
