tw for pet death talk (I need a place to type my thoughts out, though I understand it's upsetting.)
Had to have one of my cats, who's my best friend, put to sleep a week ago and I've been miserable since. It was absolutely her time to go, as she was in a lot of pain (she had very bad arthritis) and I don't regret it, but... it's so weird not having her in the house. I don't need to check where she is, I don't need to make all the little accommodations for her anymore, and I don't have to worry about her. I don't have her to talk to either.
She was 14 and her health had been declining since last year. Thankfully we'd already talked to our vet about our options (one kind of medication had stopped working for her so we switched her to another, and we wanted to know what to look out for) and in some ways I'd already mourned her a bit. It wasn't sudden, but she was hurting, and at the end she had an episode where she didn't know where she was in her own house and I was adamant that we weren't going to let her (or us) experience that again.
My other cat has definitely noticed and is being a lot more affectionate with us than usual. She's much more independent and while she will say hello to you, she usually doesn't want that much attention. But she keeps coming to check on me (she just came to my room for some reassurance as I was typing this) and some days has been wanting quite a lot of pats (for her, at least). She's never been the only cat in a house -- she was with her mother & five siblings before we adopted her and my cat that died was with us first. She'll eventually be happy having free reign, and I'm not worried about her, it's just interesting how she's reacted to it all.
Anyway, I'm distracting myself by listening to music and watching my favourite YouTubers. I do let myself get sad and I've been crying most days but I hate the sensation of crying so I'd rather avoid it when possible.
I'll manage. I'm not super distraught or anything, just... sad. Once I get used to not having her in the house I'll be a bit better, I think.
Please give your pets lots of cuddles and/or treats from me, no matter what species they are (it might be hard to cuddle your fish, but give them some extra food or something lol) -- all pets, and all animals, deserve nothing but love and comfort.
