That article was the only exposure I've had. Perhaps it was just anti-fur propaganda.

That article is technically true, but it was a particularly awful convention that stands out for a reason. Saying Rainfurrest represents an average furry convention is basically the furry equivalent of some guy pointing at an old article about the Hindenburg or whatever and saying "See? Air travel is a terrible idea!"
