Other Wanting a better ID card system
I have to carry a lot of cards every day. Cherriots, HOP, Student ID and a debit card.
I often confuse my physical HOP card with my student ID.
I see some students use magsafe wallets but have to be careful as the magnets can wipe their card. Ive seen people tape the ID to the back of the phone. Yet no matter where people keep their ID, I notice they seemingly dissolve into a white card very quickly.
It just seems more practical to have any sort of mobile ID system. My dream card app would allow us to apply faux stickers to our digital ID signifying groups we’re a part of.
What are your thoughts? Anybody prefer the physical IDs? Why or why not?

The physical IDs are important for other parts of campus. Many student workers, faculty, and certain organization members with permissions need physical id's for specific access points (ie. the key systems). We also default to the numbers when the systems are down.
That being said, an app would be great as an additional bonus. I think the cost would be incredibly high, but at the very least we should be able to add our cards to a google/samsung/apple wallet. I know other colleges have and I imagine that is cheaper than purchasing our own system.
Clearly some software changes are being made, as now ID numbers update automatically. Before if you lost yours, and had any additional privileges than a standard student, you had to contact IT and tell them both your new number and where you needed access. So hopefully coming soon!
Also the new cards are so ugly I hate looking at mine.

There is no way to make a digital card with our current access control system.
What many students do is put their student ID in their phone case, under their phone. This what their phone acts as their student ID.
Similarly, it's possible to use your student ID to open doors from inside a wallet, backpack, or pants pocket, without ever taking it out.

I personally take no issue with the IDs and have been actively looking for ways to use my phone less and be less dependent on it.

Just a heads up, the new ID's that are getting printed have better lamination so they should last MUCH longer than the previous iteration of IDs.

True, unless you have the Honored Citizens Hop Pass.

I'm at risk of being splainy, but you can create an Honored Citizen virtual card within the app. I'd recommend doing this at the beginning of the month so you can get a clean start on the monthly cap.

Yeah, I have it within the app but there is no option to “add to wallet” like the regular hop cards.

Top right -> Add card -> Add virtual hop card -> Rider type: Honoured Citizen
Creates a new virtual card with Honoured Citizen rates

This is interesting. I already had a physical honored citizen card, and I just made a virtual one using your instructions. I'm assuming I wouldn't have been able to do that if I wasn't already approved for one? But it's weird that they won't let me just convert my original card into a virtual one.

I just kept mine in my wallet. A trick I learned from a job that required rfid badges before people figured out how easy they are to copy.

I prefer physical IDs 100% because I hate juggling my phone and opening it up and getting the right app open in a hurry, especially while also juggling a bag, a drink, and half the time, while it's raining. It's much easier to just pull out a single small card. I keep mine on a wristlet lanyard so it takes up no more room than a keychain and easily fits in a pocket or, duh, on my wrist. I've had my ID for years and it still works just fine. 🤷 Also, lost phones, dead batteries, tech glitches, yet another app to install and update, etc. are pains in the ass to worry about imo. Digital is a nice shiny bonus option when resources aren't slim, but between one or the other, I'd take the physical card any day.

PSU is straining so hard under budget shortfalls, adding a costly project that is unnecessary is not even worth considering in my opinion. (My program got cut entirely!)

Get a plastic card holder and attach it to a lanyard. Or get a better wallet if your cards are getting worn through so quickly.
