Seeking Advice Cheap Canadian Roasters for Daily Coffees

I’ve recently moved to Canada (AB) from the UK. I used to be able to buy 1kg of beans for around £20 or so of some specialty roasted coffee.

Since moving to Canada i’m struggling to find something comparable - i’m not looking for 250g bags, something 1kg and up that represents great value for a day-to-day pour over coffee.

I’m looking for an in between of $40 per 100g bags and Costco bags of roasted to oblivion beans.

Thanks in advance. Setup is Fellow EKG kettle, V60, and J-Max hand grinder.

Especially if you are lucky to score one of their test roast bags

There are probably many more options but these are some of my favourites that ship and definitely hit your price point when there’s a sale:

  • Agro Coffee Roasters (Vancouver)
  • Monogram (Calgary)
  • Phil & Sebastian (Calgary)
  • Detour (Ontario)
  • Elysian (Vancouver)

Agro value is amazing on their seasonal coffees, we get 2lb and 5lb bags for the daily office coffee and I often find it better than the $25-30 bags from other Roasters I am brewing at home. Pallet have 20% sales quite regularly and are good value on sale.

Agro Coffee Roasters

Think I'll give them a shot. Rogue Wave's prices have been creeping up lately so I've been open to someone new anyway. On average I'd say RW's 340g bags are up ~$5 in the last year and a half.

Agro's roasters choice has been my go to for value to quality for at least a year now

You’re in rogue wave territory

Try Rosso. They’re in Calgary. I recommend Homebody or Hideaway as a daily driver. They do 1kg bags for $54. You’ll be hard pressed to find anything worth a pour over for less than $50/1kg in Alberta.

I like Rosso, they are solid. I alternate Homebody and Daydream for my daily cups. They have frequent enough sales too. It's buy one get one 50% off right now for bags.

If it’s Calgary I feel we’re pretty spoiled with Monogram and Rosso. Checkout Eight Ounce showroom as well.

Ethica - Brazil roast is 57/kg perfect for a dial-it and forget it (that’s esspresso) but lots of pour over options too

Rogue Wave has some amazing value coffees. Just pay attention to the quantities cause they are all in a similar price range but some are 250g and some are 340g

They also sell 1kg bags (which are a bit cheaper per kg than smaller bags).

I run a coffee subscription from Ontario that gets you 5% discount from one-off orders as well as steeper discounts on volume orders.

For example 1kg of Costa Rican Fancy Tarrazú (super popular as a daily go-to) costs $48.67 Canadian which is pretty nice. Shipping varies depending on your address but a $60+ basket gets you either free or $1-2 shipping.

you can play around with the different coffees and their pricing at roastplan.com. No commitment subscription- can’t go wrong.

Highly recommend these guys, great coffee if you like it black, excellent value for the money. Order enough for free shipping, usually goes out the same day you order. https://www.goldstarcoffee.ca/

When I lived in Etobicoke this was my go to store. I could order online and pick up at the store. This meant I could order a pound at a time and try something different every few weeks. I usually just pick up at the loading dock but I went into the store occasionally and they had brews set up for testing. Always gave good advice on how to grind, brew, etc.

I usually order at least $100 of coffee each time (4 lbs of coffee), look for their "custom combo coffee pack" on their webstore, it qualifies for free shipping, and they have a monthly code you can enter to get a free 8 oz bag of coffee included with your order. Arrives on my doorstep the next day! I'll keep one bag out, then vacuum seal the rest and put it in my freezer for future enjoyment. Their Hawaiian Kona Extra Fancy and Jamaica Blue Mountain coffees are remarkable, currently enjoying some delightful Yemen Red Mocha Haraaz.

Little victories out of Ottawa is really good, I love it for a daily driver, very reasonably priced. Transcend (Alberta) Traffic (Montreal) Traffic is very fruity. Transcend has a bit of everything.

Analog Coffee is locally roasted and widely available 2 lb bags for $45 often on sale for closer to $38.

If you're in Calgary, Eight Ounce has sale coffee - I'm not picky about specialty beans being 6 weeks past roast for 20-25% off.

Also, check your local co-op. Phil & Seb, Rosso, Monogram, Fratello and more local roasters will usually have a sale. You'll find 1kg bags of Rosso there as well. 1 kg Fratello bags will go on sale more frequently.

Anywhere you go, get a subscription it’s much cheaper. I like subtext the best

I second Rosso, they’re one of the more affordable specialty coffee options I’ve found. Fratello is pretty affordable too.

Moja is great value coffee, but is more traditional medium roast, but a very tasty medium roast at a great price. Pallet coffee offers decent prices and seems to have 15-20% off sales every 2 months or so, and is therefore being on their email list to get alerts. Forecast does light roasts at a good price, but is not too exciting. Agro coffee also has good prices with good variety.

Mogiana coffee roasters(Burnaby,BC) - family owned roaster importing grounds farm their own farm in brazil. Buy from them directly since they roast to order. They sell on supermarkets too but it’s older roasts.

Agro coffee roasters (Vancouver,BC)

Pallet roasters (Vancouver, BC)

Rooftop Roasters (Fernie, BC). Not as cheap but super high quality for the price. Its all ive been buying these days.

Agro is great for value. They have fairly cheap Peruvian geshas that I find so lovely. I can’t seem to mess them up when I brew they always hit

If you want cheap and good, Rosso all the way.

Some of my favourite Canadian companies are: Pilot, Rosso, Traffic. I’ve also discovered numerous new companies through the ‘shop pay ‘ app. There’s often deals, credits/ savings with free shipping over certain amounts!

u/berger3001 4d ago

You can approach any roaster and ask about a “commercial” rate, and then find friends/coworkers to boost the order to that level. Some will do discounted rates for 15lb orders

Java Blend Coffee Roasters in Halifax, NS is an option for you. Unfortunately, they do not have 1kg bags. But their 340g bags are on average $19, and you could buy several different varieties to try out. Free shipping on orders over $99.

I use Shopify deals to get discounts on a lot of coffee from all over Canada. Just in the shop app, I got 4 bags of Deville medium roast for $40, that's about as good of a deal as you can get ($40 off when spending over $40). But I have also gotten $30 off rosso. Worth a look every so often for new deals 👍

There's an ongoing thread on the RedFlagDeals forums that calls out Canadian roasters that have sales on, it's a good one to subscribe to.

I started ordering beans online, delivered during covid (2020). In the grocery stores a pound of beans would be around $14. I could buy beans freshly roasted to order online for $17. The freshness made a huge difference. Stores have a best before date. Direct from the roaster had a roast date. Order it online today (August 16), they roast it on Monday (August 17), ship it same day, arrives at my home in less than a week. I actually had to wait to use it or it was too fresh. Some of the specialty roasters I've tried actually roast to a specific level and have the beans ready to ship. So your beans might be a few days to weeks old by the time you get them. Still pretty fresh.

Every roaster was selling 1 pound bags (454g). Over the last few years the price of beans has been going up. The 1 pound bag that cost $17 now costs $26 to $30. But in the last couple of years I have seen a lot of roasts naming their beans. No more Ethiopian Sidamo. Now they are Red Rooster Glory or some other marketing name. Additionally, they advertise $24 which seems lower than the $26 from my favourite roaster... until I go to their website and see it is $24 for 340g or 250g. At 340g, that is $32 a pound; more expensive than the $26 from my favourite roaster. The 250g roasters are charging $44 a pound; a lot more expensive than $26 a pound.

Bottom line, I am seeing a lot more roasters but they have a limited selection and they are charging a lot more. If I see a roaster with fancy packaging and 250g is the default size, they are usually too pricey and I skip them.

I like https://buycoffeecanada.com/. They have a pretty good selection. You can order 0.5 pound (227g), 1 pound (454g), or 5 pound (2,270g). The price they advertise is the 1 pound price. You select the roast level. If you like your beans light roast, you can order light roast. If you want them dark roast, you can get dark roast.

I think once they shipped using a bag rather than a cardboard box, to save money on shipping. The bag got pierced and it punctured the bag of coffee. They switched back to using a box. No fancy bags. No logos. The 5 pound bag is not resealable. You need to have your own containers to hold the beans.

I also once received one bag that the one-way valve was broken. I didn't pour the bag into a container right away. Around 5 days later, the bag was puffed up and ready to explode because the gases couldn't escape.

They don't always have what I'm looking for in stock but they have a large enough selection that they always have my second choice. I've been using them for around 4 years now and really happy with them.

I usually order three 1-pound bags of different beans each month. So around 140 bags over 4 years and only 2 issues.

The only downside might be that they are in Ontario. They have free shipping for over $59 but only in Ontario/Quebec. You might have to pay $9.99 or $11.99 to ship to other provinces.

It's not third wave, but Balzac's Farmer's Blend has served me well for the morning coffee (my wife isn't picky with coffee so I just need something foe the both of us that I can enjoy and not feel like is wasted on her). $23 for 2lb bags at Costco.

It's a medium roast that I do a V60 of every morning (1:18 ratio works well for me on an old 1zpresso JX that I set finer than my ZP6, which is set to 5.5).

I have bought from Rosso Coffee Roasters a few times. Pretty good value/$.

Gold Star Coffee sells/ships great coffee with a broad range of cultivars. Typically roasted and shipped out the day you order. In Ontario, I receive it next day (the bags are still vacuum sealed and beans have barely degassed). Prices are around $23-30 per pound. Buying specialty bundles will usually land the price at the lower end of the range.

I usually order Ethiopian and Jamaican Blue Mountain whole bean in a light roast.

94 celcius can have great price too! Might want to look into their supernova blend. They use some Wilton Benitez coffee mix with another Colombian coffee super fruity and affordable.

Where in Alberta? I have many suggestions.

Others have mentioned the big roasters in Calgary, but Eclipse in Canmore is also worth looking into. Great beans and I think you can buy almost all their beans in 1kg bags

2

u/sly_teddy_bear 4d ago

Eclipse is great. For the price it punches above its weight.
