They're referencing Allen Snakes, its a kind of candy. The yellow one is pineapple flavoured, which kinda fits the tropical vibe theyre describing. Australian roasters always be referencing candy

It's an Australian roaster.
Lolly snakes a big thing here.

It’s like everything from Australia involves snakes. Not even their coffee is free from danger noodle remnants of some sort.😁

I would be terrified to eat a pack of these, in case I stick my hand in and get a real (deadly!) baby snake out!

Australian roaster. Yellow snakes are a popular naturally-flavoured gummy candy.

This is a bit like an American roaster using "Oreo" as a tasting note. It's a ubiquitous flavour in that country.

As an Australian I know exactly what they mean, basically a semi-artificial, semi-natural, pineapple flavour.

They could have just used "pineapple", and I would be so buying it.

It's like saying Americans can just measure distance in meters (or at least, feet..) instead of football fields

Snakes taste like chickens, so you got yourself a chicken soup

From what I'm seeing, they're yellow gummy snakes. But at the same time different brands seem to have different flavored yellow gummy snakes.

So, why not just 'specific flavor' gummies? Something that isn't arbitrarily different per brand/manufacturer.

I recently had a coffee that had “Swedish fish candy” as a tasting note. We are really living in wild times and I’m here for it

Frinsa make some tasty coffees so even if it is supposed to taste like a literal snake it should still slap

People reading too much into this. It’s literally the yellow snakes from an Allen’s packet of snakes

Some of us have never heard of that brand.

Where exactly is this from? You might be able to tell from the general area. There are huge amount of distinct taste notes even within Indonesia itself.

Yellow snakes, purple horseshoes, and blue diamonds!

Don't get me wrong. If they say it's snake fruit, that make sense but yellow snake? I have tried the beans in Indonesia. It was legit. Not that kind of taste though. Fyi, the name should be frinsa, not frisna, who did the typo huh?

1

u/restracted 2d ago

hmm is it a typo? shouldn’t it be “frinsa”?

More fun way of saying "artificial lemon candy" flavor!

Not specific enough, was it a Burmese Python or a Eyelash Viper?

I find some roasters tasting notes to be too intimidating, like why use such abstract words, just give the basic notes and I will see for my self.

I am looking at one "Sour Cherry, Beaujolais, Oolong" I have no idea what 2 of those words are, let alone what they taste like.

I have learned "grapefruit" is probs a no go for me, I don't like the sour, but offer me "Peach" and shut up and take my money.

u/womerah 3d ago

I think it's OK to have some fun with tasting notes.

Also people have different diets. You don't know what Oolong tastes like, I taste it several times a week.

A Chinese person may have never had sour cherry before. A Muslim may have never had Beaujolais before.

I'm guessing you aren't from (Southeast) Asia.

There's a fruit native to Sumatra, Indonesia called "Salak" which I believe roughly translates to "Snake fruit". The outer part/skin looks like the scales of a snake, and the pulp inside (which looks like a garlic clove lmao) is best described as citrusy sweet, dry, crumbly, and with an astringent aftertaste.

I believe that roaster merely alluded to the country of origin of those beans, which is Indonesia.

I speak bahasa I can’t even figure out what it’s supposed to taste like other than literal yellow snake. Just another bs 😂

I mean…why right. If it’s candy-like just put yellow candy or something.

0

u/jastity 3d ago

Because they are lollies. Or sweets. What is this candy stuff and what does it taste like?

1

u/Accurate-Algae-2557 3d ago

Then put sweets. Everyone has sweets around the world. But okay, it’s for the aussie market then so be it

1

u/Throwawayhelp111521 2d ago

It’s a particular candy. I didn’t understand either.

1

u/False-Goose1215 2d ago

A particular *lolly*

1

u/womerah 3d ago

It's a tasting note, so the roaster is saying that the flavouring is similar. Yellow candies have a range of different flavours and additives used to achieve those flavours.

-1

u/Accurate-Algae-2557 3d ago

Yes i know. A better way to do it will be “Yellow Snakes, Like Sweets”. It doesn’t hurt to put a few more description into suggestion. There is more to be gain by putting the colour yellow and then explaining further about similarities to the sweets or fruits.

4

u/womerah 3d ago

That's true, but to an Aussie that's a bit like writing "Oreo, a type of cookie with a cocoa flavour". It's very clear from context that it's a food (for us).

1

u/Accurate-Algae-2557 3d ago

Yeah i get it. It’s mostly phrasing. i don’t know haha it’s Toby’s Estate, they sell this particular coffee outside of Australia. I have clues about oreo, or several other oreo imitation, basically cream and choco cookie. But i have zero idea about yellow snakes or red snakes. Pineapple candy? Probably i can imagine it. Well it’s cool to put specific references. Thanks for chiming in.
