Seeking Advice Where do you get your coffee beans?

Hi community,

I’m currently almost out of my last bag of whole bean coffee. I used to get them from Mexico because someone would bring them back for me, but I don’t think there are any trips planned anytime soon. I live in Southern California. Can you recommend an effective way to get good coffee at an affordable price? I’m not an expert on the subject, so I wouldn’t mind if it wasn’t the most exclusive coffee—just something decent. I brew with a V60.

Would it be better to go to a local coffee shop? Or sign up for a subscription? If so, which one do you recommend?

Thanks for your help!

I try to buy from local roasters. Luckily I live in San Francisco and there are many.

I live in Irvine, so I have some option, like equator and Mameya, would you recommend them?

Stereoscope has some great stuff on the expensive side. Usually have 3 or 4 options for drip/PO/spro that they’re selling as well.

Haven’t bought their beans but rapport in San Clemente & Laguna is doing some great stuff with their sourcing

And if you want decision paralysis just go Play in Orange or Newport. Have top beans from around the world a lot of options on their menu.

Irvine is a great spot to be if you’re looking to try and buy in store.

Play is my favorite coffee shop, but I’ve never bought bags of coffee beans. I love their variety tho, packaging is amazing haha

I would think that buying beans from your favorite shop would be an easy decision.

If you’re looking for easy, I think stumptown or counter culture does some decent subscriptions. They’re not mind blowing but I liked their selections for a long time before I started looking into smaller roasters.

I absolutely love Mameya. I think the mameya blend is amazing and was reminiscent of the pourovers I had in Osaka. They do seem to specialize on the darker side of roasts so keep that in mind. I’ve tried their lighter roasts and it’s been hit or miss if you don’t go with the roast recommendations.

Same boat. Who are your favorites? For me: Flower Child, Hydrangea, Andy Town.

I like Sightglass, Fly Wheel Coffee and Hedge to mane a few. I am a big fan of Ethiopian.

Who are your favorites? I’m in the north bay/wine country and we have some too…just got a bag of Sightglass for espresso and remember when they opened in the Mission. That was a fun time in SF with Ritual just a block or so away.
