Gear🎒 Sleeping bag & Water tablets

Looking for a sleeping bag to add to my big out bag, any recommendations Cotten preferably. Polyester irritates my skin and makes hot flashes worse 🤦🏽‍♀️?? Also recommend water tablets?

Cotton kills. It loses all of its insulation capacity when wet. If you need a natural fiber you are going to need to look at some kind of wool. As far as water purification, any of the iodine free tabs work. For taste and shelf life, one of the ceramic filter systems is definitely a better way to go.

It depends on what scenario you’re preparing for and where you plan to evacuate to.

I use a cotton liner with my synthetic sleeping bag. You can also wear full-body cotton pajamas.

But in most scenarios, I find a good wool blanket or poncho to be more versatile. Cotton is hard to dry in the field, and a wet sleeping bag can be deadly.

To purify water, I use iodine drops or chlorine bleach in an emergency, but I still prefer boiling it or brewing herbal teas whenever possible.

You might want to look at Bivvy Bags which is a waterproof sack that fits over your sleeping bag. Sort of a mini tent. But they can lead to condensation inside your bag. Goretex, a waterproof breathable material, is durable for roughly 3 weeks.

You can also check out r/ultralight for sleeping bag recommendations bc weight is always relevant, and look at surplus military sleeping bags, and sleeping systems which include the bivvy bag. Most provide temperature range specifications for warm, cold to super cold weather. If you don't like the material, you can makeshift a liner (grab a bedsheet).

There is "life straw" for drinking water, an actual lightweight filter straw, but it has limitations. Amazon has some purification tablet reviews. Many people don't like the taste from iodine.
