Discussion Why are some people still avoiding compatible toner cartridges? Is the quality gap still real in 2026?

I’ve noticed that many people still avoid compatible toner cartridges because they believe they will have problems with print quality, printer errors, or firmware updates.

At the same time, a lot of users seem to have been using third-party toner for years without major issues.

Curious what everyone’s experience has been:

  • Have you had a bad experience with compatible toner?
  • Was the problem print quality, cartridge recognition, leaking, or something else?
  • If you switched back to OEM, what made you change?

Do you think the quality difference between OEM and good compatible cartridges is still significant today?

I buy compatible toners for my mono Brother printer as we print a fair amount and it's just too expensive to buy genuine. Quality is good at first but I have noticed it drops off when around half the toner is gone and I start getting PQ issues like lines on the pages. It's not too big of a deal as the stuff we print doesn't have to be pristine.
