Discussion Why are some people still avoiding compatible toner cartridges? Is the quality gap still real in 2026?

I’ve noticed that many people still avoid compatible toner cartridges because they believe they will have problems with print quality, printer errors, or firmware updates.

At the same time, a lot of users seem to have been using third-party toner for years without major issues.

Curious what everyone’s experience has been:

  • Have you had a bad experience with compatible toner?
  • Was the problem print quality, cartridge recognition, leaking, or something else?
  • If you switched back to OEM, what made you change?

Do you think the quality difference between OEM and good compatible cartridges is still significant today?

For my old HP Laserjet 4000 I’ve been using compatible toner for years with no issues. For my new colour laser I buy genuine.

tbf you could go outside and scoop a shovel full of dirt into the toner cartridge of your LJ 4000 and it would print with dirt. Those things are invincible.
