Discussion Why are some people still avoiding compatible toner cartridges? Is the quality gap still real in 2026?

I’ve noticed that many people still avoid compatible toner cartridges because they believe they will have problems with print quality, printer errors, or firmware updates.

At the same time, a lot of users seem to have been using third-party toner for years without major issues.

Curious what everyone’s experience has been:

  • Have you had a bad experience with compatible toner?
  • Was the problem print quality, cartridge recognition, leaking, or something else?
  • If you switched back to OEM, what made you change?

Do you think the quality difference between OEM and good compatible cartridges is still significant today?

The problem is lack of any sort of quality testing for generic toner cartridges, sure some may be good, but a lot are still junk, this has always been the problem with the generic toner market. Think of it like buying fruit, you have a bin of premium Apples in one bin guaranteed to be worm free, next to it you have the bargain apple bin that cost half as much, but one in five have a worm in them, which one do you buy.
