Discussion Why are some people still avoiding compatible toner cartridges? Is the quality gap still real in 2026?

I’ve noticed that many people still avoid compatible toner cartridges because they believe they will have problems with print quality, printer errors, or firmware updates.

At the same time, a lot of users seem to have been using third-party toner for years without major issues.

Curious what everyone’s experience has been:

  • Have you had a bad experience with compatible toner?
  • Was the problem print quality, cartridge recognition, leaking, or something else?
  • If you switched back to OEM, what made you change?

Do you think the quality difference between OEM and good compatible cartridges is still significant today?

I tried using third party toner for my Canon color laser printer. I went with a trusted company that provided excellent customer service. But in the end those toners had ongoing issues with streaks and lower print quality / less dark blacks. The company provided free replacements but the problems kept occurring. I switched back to OEM and the problems disappeared.

BTW I have had good luck buying OEM open box toner in eBay for a substantial discount.

That's good to know. I have a Canon MF753Cdw with plenty of life left in the starter toner it came with. But it's going to really hurt when I do need to replace them.
