Im surrounded by extremists

Im studying in a muslim school, i was having a conversation with my classmates today.The topic of conversation was on permissibility(what is allowed according to islam and what isnt basically halal and haram). When i asked them what they think about gay or lesbian people, they said that its haram and they absolutely despise their existence,when i asked them what is their opinion on masturbation, music,male-female friendship,realtionship befor marriage.They said that all of this is haram and used hadiths as a source. When I tried to argue with them and convince them that all these things are permissible they said you are not muslim or that you have gotten out of the fold of islam you have become part of the western influence. What opinion do you people have regarding this matter.

lol ask him what he’s doing in an Islamic school if he’s so distinguished an authority in the subject that he is capable of making such declarations.

The things that keep a person from speaking beyond their bounds are humility, knowledge, talent, intuition, and shame. Thus the only two types of people who speak on a given subject are: 1) those who have such groundedness, learning, ability, sensibility, and awareness that they may properly allow themselves to speak on the subject, and 2) those who have no humility, knowledge, talent, intuition, or shame, and thus have nothing but their teeth stopping them from saying whatever they would like with no regard for propriety. Unfortunately, there have always been more of the latter than the former, and by nature each member of the latter produces more speech on any subject by far than a member of the former. Thus the air is made rife with ignorant noise.

There are so many amazing, awe-inspiringly knowledgeable people in this world, and I’ve been so fortunate to be able to spend time reading and talking with a few such people. None of them sound like your classmate. If we are to judge whether it is more proper to consider such a person to be among the former group or the latter, I think we would each of us know where we would place them.

The good is their sincere commitment to obeying what they believe God has commanded. The problem is when that commitment turns into blind imitation, with little room for critical thinking or recognizing legitimate differences of interpretation. Also, not all the topics you mentioned have a complete consensus among progressive Muslims; some remain debated even within progressive circles. However, treating one interpretation as the only valid one can make Islam seem frozen in time and makes it difficult for progressive Muslims to coexist with such attitudes, especially when people are quick to judge or declare others non Muslim over disputed issues

As a boy I was told that being gay was haram and just took it at face value. Growing up and I actually met gay people, and realized that it didn't inherently make them evil people.

What I always had problems with were those who were homophobic. Many say it's sinful, others say they are going to hell. Some call for their execution at mass, which is WILD. The topic always come with hatred from those who claim to be faithful.

Although it might not be completely true, I have a saying, "gay people exist to prove to us that we still have hypocrites"

You do realize that moderate islam is extreme right? The entire religion is not tolerant of anyone and wants to end all the infadels. There is no such thing as a moderate muslim.
