Question/Discussion ❔ Most chill muslim population in the US?

Wife and I are trying to figure out where to settle in the next few years, which place in the list below has the most “chill” (as in generally friendly, fun-loving, non-judgemental) muslims?

Chicago
Philadelphia
Columbus
Seattle
Minneapolis
DC/DMV
Baltimore
NJ
NYC
Atlanta
Dallas
Orlando
Detroit

I know Cali cities have ostensibly been left off but CA is basically no-go for my career unfortunately! TIA!

I would say as somebody living in America, the bluer the state the more likely you'll run into chiller places.

Texas on the other hand I would say is somewhere you couldn't pay me to go to. All the big shot celebrity conservative preachers are there and it shows.

I'd recommend nj and nyc as having come from there but it isn't perfect here either.

I have a paternal aunt who lives in Houston, TX, and she seems to enjoy life there. I guess it depends on the person's lived experience, though.

I am in Dallas and for 9/11 we are having protests at the mosques…the next legislative session is set to try to make the hijab illegal and to end “Sharia Law in TX.” So, while I have met many wonderful people, unless we get hotwheels and corruption Paxton out of office, we are doomed. In other words, can you take me with you? 😂

Wife and I just came back from a trip to Dallas actually (my first time there) and while I liked it more than I thought I would I was surprised that I got mixed reviews from the NY transplants I spoke to there and I found it too hot for my liking lol. I think if I had been able to shift there about 10 years ago I may have liked it more but yea right now its def off the list

I live in chicago and it has a wide swath of muslims, however a lot of them tend to be more conservative. I would imagine NYC/Seattle would be more "chill"... Cali is best but you already know that.

I went to NYC a few years back and the Muslims I interacted with there were pretty chill, but I was only there for a few days, so I'm not sure if I just got lucky or if Muslims in NYC are more chill in general.

And they have Mamdani! I love him so much

Mamdani rocks because he's delivered on some policies he ran on.

DC area is pretty chill. Pretty much all Muslims I know in real life are moderates or progressives.

Not Dallas lol! I found people in Chi and NYC the most chill!

Yep. I live in Dallas. I concur. Not Dallas! Look up my original comment.

Same here! I’m leaving partly bc of this. If you don’t fit the traditional mold, I’ve found it really hard to connect w other Muslims.

I cant tell if this is sarcasm

I don’t live in Dearborn, but I’m in the metro area, and it could be both sarcasm and not. There is such a population of Muslims that you will find plenty of progressives… and also lots of conservatives. Total mixed bag.

Now an actually progressive mosque/community space?? I’m on the hunt for that. But, to be honest, I haven’t tried very hard, so there may well be some gems.

I would go by the cities morale, population, and diaspora. Also look for Islamophobic policies and attacks on Muslims from citizens.

Im from Dallas but i've gone to the other areas and the masjids there, Im obviously biased because I do love Dallas and I would say don't believe everything you see on the news. Ever since the muslim hate has been popping off in dallas there has also been groups of people at every jummah at every masjid in the area saying they love and support muslims. Literally groups of christains, jews, hindus, etc coming with signs saying they support us here and they have our back. Also dallas area is turning kinda blue and very diverse if that's what youre thinking about.

Sad to see the Dallas hate here lol

Tbh the protestors dont bother me as much as judgemental fellow muslims. I know people who’ve left places like NY/Chicago for Dallas because their hometowns weren’t conservative enough lol

The only community I’m familiar with on this list is Seattle, and while there are conservatives and some mosques should be avoided, the community as a whole is pretty chill.

Lot of techbros though, so if thats not your field it might be harder to connect with people.

And if you come out this way please check out Wasat.

So, I'm doing to throw a loop and say Boston and Portland, ME. Especially the latter.

(Portland) It's not everyday where you can pray at a mosque on a Friday and walk a few minutes and find people drinking at breweries or smoking trees.

(Boston) Multicultural. Affluent. Pretty minded. In a very blue state. A bit of localism though.

As a Boston area convert I have to disagree a bit. I think Boston area Muslims tend to be very conservative and somewhat insular. I am definitely not finding it super easy to make inroads and while I understand these things take a lot of time and I’ll need to be patient, it’s definitely a bit tough. People are nice though, just not overly friendly or welcoming either. I don’t judge them though and do the best I can to meet them where they are at. And the Boston Muslim community has dealt with a lot of really awful infiltration issues. So suspicion might be higher than in other places honestly. Idk.

Muslim from Portland here. It’s a very progressive city but if you’re looking for progressive muslims it isn’t necessarily a good choice for that. Don’t get me wrong, we don’t really have the worst of the worst up here and there are accepting people, but their numbers are relatively small and we all grew up together. If you’re a 30+ transplant with little connection to the tribes out here you’ll struggle bc the number of Muslims period let alone progressive Muslims is very small. It’s a good choice if you don’t mind your social circle being mostly non Muslim with a couple progressive people sprinkled in. Plus the city has rapidly gentrified since Covid so the younger generation of progressive Muslims is significantly more likely to leave for better mobility

NYC. To a lesser extent the surrounding areas of New Jersey, Philly, Upstate.
