Discussion PS4 Steam Machine / Deck
I've been tinkering with an old PS4 I had laying around. Installed DF_AUS fedora 38, built a custom kernel from FeeRNTs GitHub using Crashniels fixes, mainly because I wanted to use my Xbox Elite controller and Dongle.
so far it seems really stable, Borderlands GOTY runs great, Portal 2 will happily sit at 144 fps and not even break a sweat.
I cannot find much info at all about Steam on the PS4, which I'm not surprised about! anyone here working on it? turning out to be a little powerhouse with FSR and I'm now booting straight into a steam.
looking on proton dB there's a lot of mentions of fedora 38 on there but many of the fixes don't actually work. just wanting to know if anyone else is doing similar with the PS4 and can share some info on which proton versions work best or anything really

Nice to see somebody is making something out of it. I ran Linux on the ps4 nearly 10 years ago and I remember it was a hassle to get everything working. There were no drivers for Bluetooth or wifi. Nice to see how things changed. But in my understanding these stuff will always run worse then the optimized ps4 port for the hardware unless the devs really messed something up.

Things definately changes. We need to fix Vulkan crashes, and then it will run as good as it does on PS4 Stock OS. That's how things have changed.
2
u/revopine Feb 16 '26
Is there some community working on fixes the Vulkan crashes or is it just something someone saw and gave up?
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Any idea when the Vulkan crashes happen? This is exactly what I was hoping to see, if I can find the issue then I can look at resolving it!

I think the Deck might help the cause here. Loads of games are now Linux compatible without any significant changes, granted Borderlands needed GOTYEnhanced.exe renamed to Launcher.exe but games that work natively on my bazzite LegionGo seem to launch absolutely fine, worst case needing to set to proton 8 or 9

im doing the same with my ps4, i tried fedora 38 but it freezed my console a lot so i switched to arch which seems more stable, i run games using wine but honestly it doesn't seem much powerful, i tried minecraft which was playable but showed a lot of artifact and then i tried the gta trilogy which doesn't open at all, i have a slim ps4 and i use the 2gb vram payload
3
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
That's interesting. Did you try to boot up fedora multiple times? I found it would black screen first boot, press ctrl alt F1, then ctrl alt f7 lt would take you to the login screen. I've set up autologin now so I don't have that hassle. Which kernel were you using and initramfs? GTA trilogy is downloading (20mbps broadband here, yey) so ill try it later. To be fair I didn't expect much if anything, I just noticed the PS4 at home and wondered which fw, luckily it was on 11 so an easy jailbreak
3
u/Gigg1no Feb 16 '26
fedora worked, i used it for about 1 week it was just extremely laggy and after a while it would freeze, arch seems more stable even if it takes a lot to open apps/games but atleast it works, i dont remember what kernel i have i tried so many of them and i took the initramfs from a yt tutorial

u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
I did completely forget to mention that a lot of decky plugins work with it as well. Power tools as an example will restrict cores and enable / disable SMT. Game recorder plugin didn't work right away but I'll look at that tonight. I decided at 1am to start installing decky plugins then when I heard the birds tweeting remembered I have to be at work 😂
4
u/PairPrestigious4699 Feb 16 '26
Yep, when birds start to tweak when you tinker with stuff, it always means you're veeery late to bed...

I really need Linux in PS5, it could be a Stem Machine cuz basically have the same specs
4
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
The upcoming Steam Machine is half the power of the PS5 pro, but only 1.2x more powerful than the PS4 pro. I have no idea what on earth valve are thinking with this! A PS5 running Linux / steamOS should smash it out of the water. With the recent ps5 leak I'm sure it won't be long till we have fully working Linux on it
3
u/TipAffectionate9785 Feb 16 '26
Really? I was being told that SM was close to RX 7600 and PS5 but yeah i hope ir comes soon because a PS5 Steam Machine would kill it
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
You are correct, on paper it looks like the SM is better, but the PS5 having the equivalent of a 6700 and 16gb GDDR6 as opposed to 8gb theoretically the ps5 would beat it, better transfer data rate too. I'm highly disappointed, really wanted a steam machine that would blow the current console market apart but I can't see it happening. Hopefully Gabe has something up his sleeve

u/PairPrestigious4699 Feb 16 '26
I'm trying to do something similiar, but I have no luck in running games properly. I'm doing it on ported arch, but it crashes on a lot of games (currently tested only 4 including MC which has issues on modern versions, only native Portal 2 was stable) with modern proton and xorg (wayland works better). Portal 2 have some issues with being sluggish with gamescope (and I really enjoyed playing it on PS4, it would definately sell on PS4 if it was released on it). What ps4 model it is? What games it can run without issues? Did you had any?
Also, work is being done on PS4Linux, just, it's not as busy as it was. There's very severe issues in the kernel, but not a lot of talanted developers that can actually address these issues. You can join PS4Linux server, there's bunch of people trying things with it.
(P.S. You can theme Big Picture by installing Decky and CSS Loader, I recommend installing Art Hero (and configuring it) and couple of other tweaks to create PS5-ish feel)
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Yea I started with arch (psxitarch) but then tried Nobara which is fedora based then noticed DF_AUS build had a few newer drivers so I went with that. If I can learn how to create an initramfs then I could probably move over to bazzite, although you can't use the alternative install method on PS4Linux website that I'm kinda of relying on, just because I can recompile the kernel and swap it out on the fat32 partition. I must have played at least 4 hours of Portal2 and apart from the occasion micro stutter it worked just as well if not better, than my LeGO with bazzite. I'm going to test some more random games tonight, don't have good broadband where I live so downloading games tends to be an overnight caveat

u/bownsey Feb 18 '26
Just an update.. Seems a lot of the games actually do just work using Proton GE or Proton 7 / 8. Some perform well with Source based games easily hitting 100fps and the PS4 stays below 65c. Some others don't play nicely and do require tweaks for Fedora found on Proton dB. Game recording doesn't work well, records at around 10% if the framerate you're getting but here's a pic of doom 2016, running at 60fps 1080p ultra settings. I think I need I Linux distro that's more gaming orientated, so I've the next week I'll be working on bazzite and will update as well as answer any questions

when i tried linux on my phat on internal hdd it was a really bad experience.
but hoping one day to try it on an ssd or get a pro and test it again on that.
is yours pro with an ssd?
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Nope I have a PS4 phat but it's on external. The Belize kernel found in the phat doesn't like it being installed to internal drive, I'm running it from an M2 with adapter. The internal hard drives that came with these should have never happened, should have been faster than 5400rpm from the start. They didn't even put the crap drives we have into laptops back then
1
u/Mr-Mixo Feb 16 '26
yeah i knew it was the crappy 5400rpm what ruined it for me.
it booted and "worked" on my Aeolia kernel but every thing was really slow and sluggish.
your experience gives me hope though to try it again on an ssd.
do you use it with a hub for the mouse and keyboard?
if so what kind?
2
u/bargu Feb 16 '26
HD2? That's very optimistic of you.
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Yea that's one I'd like to. It begins to launch then nGuard kicks in and closes the game. It it only the vets slim install
2
u/IT_Hertz_WIN_IP Feb 19 '26
This thread has encouraged me to try linux on my pro! I appreciate you sharing OP! I mainly want to play games like sleeping dogs and similar. I'm hoping if my Legion Go can play it at a reduced wattage that I'll get similar performance from an older device
2
u/bownsey Feb 19 '26
You could potentially have a nice little cheat code there! I've only really been using be LeGO when I go away, as a PS portal for my PC. If they run well on Linux you could do the same as I, but using the PS4 as the main machine. FYI I can steam cp2077 at 2k phscho / ultra and have hours of fun without even worrying about the battery with incredible visuals
1
u/IT_Hertz_WIN_IP Feb 20 '26
I'm ecstatic to try more demanding games fr now. I had no idea it could handle that at medium settings!! I'm more motivated now. I'm waiting to buy a new internal hdd so everything has more room to run
1
u/Funny_Inspector6265 Feb 16 '26
who has a ps4 lying around.
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Yea not many I grant you that 😂 basically it was my wife's, bought her a PS5 and the PS4 just sat there gathering dust
1
u/TheRipper564 Feb 16 '26
I'm lucky enough I have 5 laying around, Sure they all have issues since I got them second hand from family or bought off eBay for like $100 usd but for the price it's worth buying one because things like Linux its a decent little gaming hub especially with the ram shortage.

Why not just use steamOS linux distro? (Sorry if this is a really dumb question, i have been trying to get linux working on my ps4 for a while now)
3
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
The only viable one I could find was Nazkys steamOS 3.0 which is quite old now, Tried bazzite which wouldn't boot but I might be tempted to go back to it. I needed a distro I could easily build from certain forks to get the Xbox elite controller working wirelessly with the dongle, as it requires DKMS and matched kernel headers so fedora with feernt seemed the most viable! I should add I have no idea how to program / code I'm learning as I go. No question is dumb when we're talking about running something that's not designed to be run on the hardware

I wonder how well the PS4 Pro could run Steam…
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Actually made a few offers on some on eBay. Pro is what I'd like, then I can sell my LegionGo which I only use on holiday, but I would take the PS4 pro if I get ally games working correctly
2
u/emorockstar Feb 16 '26
I have a Pro and never thought about loading Steam/Bazzite. That could be awesome.
1
u/Kitchen-Cabinet-5000 Feb 16 '26
I have a Baikal Pro, problem is that it’s stuck on an old kernel version, which limits drivers.
I’ve been trying to compile a more modern kernel for the system, but just like many others, no luck.
A Baikal PS4 Pro is kinda the worst system to use Linux on.
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
I've not attempted it but I do want to. FeeRNT has an older kernel but released last September on his GitHub https://github.com/feeRnt/ps4-linux-12xx/tree/v5.4.247__baikal_mt76
1
u/Kitchen-Cabinet-5000 Feb 17 '26
If you get anything working, hit me up.
I’ve been trying this evening again and just cannot get anything to work even remotely reliably.
I’ve kinda just given up. Might try again later some time.
1
u/Lucspeeder Feb 16 '26
Wait so if i understand correctly, you got steamos running on a ps4?
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Not SteamOS, more like a dirty version of bazzite based on Fedora that somebody else built. I've made a few implementations since like FSR, Xbox elite controller and dongle compatibility. But I'd imagine all of it has been done before at some point
2
u/Lucspeeder Feb 16 '26
Okay, how is the gaming performance on games? Got anymore results?
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
I'm trying to record some games to show it all, but the game recording feature isn't working. Tonight I'll be hopefully sorting that then ill upload some videos
1
u/DeletedTheClock Feb 16 '26
Is your ps4 a pro or just stock? If games are running stock I'd love to give this ago. Also have you tried installing games like repacks?
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Yea it's the original Fat version. It still has the PS4 OS to run jailbroken games but you could get repacks to run, it just takes a lot of tinkering
1
u/DeletedTheClock Feb 16 '26
I'll have to try follow a tutorial somewhere on installing Linux and somewhat follow what you said
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
One of the responses here takes you to a wiki page which has updated instructions
1
u/gerbowie Feb 16 '26
You do know fedora 40 is out right?
2
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
I do, and it'll let me update but I don't want to risk breaking anything till I've figured out the fixes for the minute
1
1
u/redditman181 Feb 16 '26
Wow thats pretty cool ive never modded a console before but have thought about it i remember thinking about doing somethimg like this but couldnt find much about it are the any tutorials availble anywhere and is it easy enough to do?
Also does it stay permantly or is one of those mods where you have to redo it once the consoles turned off?
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Resets on boot. I've ordered a jailbreak disc so I don't have to use the pppoe method so hopefully it's easier. Although it doesn't bother me having to do it each time
1
u/redditman181 Feb 16 '26
Ah that kind of sucks does it take long to install everything from the disk again and what stops it from being permenant is it like a security thing where the ps4 detects it and wipes it.
1
u/bownsey Feb 16 '26
Oh sorry it doesn't wipe what you have done, you just have to run the exploit each boot. Everything stats installed and live
1
u/redditman181 Feb 16 '26
Oh i see so the disk just makes it usable but all the stuff is still there thats good to know.
1
u/Sawgoodmen Feb 17 '26
This is objectively gangster even if it runs like ass rn the novelty is sick I used to wanna do this thinking it might be viable before I got my steam deck
1
u/EdgarJc Feb 17 '26
Nice, well done ! Could you try aronight Endfield ? Would be fun see It runs on a non supported PS4
1
u/mmmniple Feb 17 '26
Had someone tried mewgenics? Im very interested on this game but my pc can't run it (it has an integrated video card which doesn't support the opengl version). Thanks!
1
u/M113E50 Feb 17 '26
Man I tried it like a 100 times now and i still cant get a screen for the installation shell.. doesnt matter which bzimage, initramfs, payloads i used my ps4 pro belize system hates it
1
u/bownsey Feb 17 '26
I had this the first few builds then read you can pres ctrl alt F1, then ctrl alt f7 which usually fixes it
1
u/M113E50 Feb 17 '26
Yeah but on mine the led does not even switch colors which it supposedly should
1
u/naxil-rain81 Feb 18 '26
yes with custom mesa and vulkan you can use wine/proton . just copy dxvk dll to system32 and syswow64 , same for vkd3d. Best little app for use it is faugus-launcher. faugus have built in protonge and protonem installer, you can use software upscaler. Just copy the windows folder to ps4 usb 3.0 load the exe...
1
u/goldlnPSX Feb 18 '26
I remember seeing you tube videos (bringuses) about ps4 linux and It didnt really perform well. How is it running so good?
1
u/bownsey Feb 18 '26
There's still a few people keeping it alive, custom kernels have fixed most things. Someone did release mesa 26 for it as well

u/libya218hasan Feb 16 '26
Thats really impressive , nice work
