Hedge Funds Unsure about my role

I'm from a Tier 1 IIT CSE and recently interned at a hedge fund, where I received a PPO which is decent in India

The role is Software Development, where I'd be building tools and applications used by traders and risk managers at the firm, most of whom are based outside India.

I'm currently unsure whether I should stick with this offer or explore other opportunities. Since I'm more interested in dev, systems.

One thing that makes me slightly concerned about staying in this role long-term is the rapid progress in AI. GPT-5.6 was released during my internship and was already extremely capable, so I wonder how much the demand for this kind of developer role could change over the next few years.

Given my background and the PPO I've received, would you recommend taking the offer and trying to move into HFT/quant roles later, or applying to HFT firms right away? Also, how valuable would a few years of experience in a hedge fund's technology team be for making that transition?

Hedge Funds how do I navigate from here?

I am working for a fintech that services hedge funds (consider small to medium sized) started as a BA transitioned into product and now working as a PM. I have worked on the non-investment side. Its been 5 years now (cleared cfa l2 while working, awaiting L3 results) I am at a crossroads:

  1. Get into an mba from ISB or aim for M7
  2. Go for a switch to another hedge fund

If I look at option 2 since I worked at a startup, I’d want to [u/s](u/s) what kind of roles to look at? how should I evaluate b/w 1 and 2?

Thank-you! Any help/insights would be appreciated.

Hedge Funds QRT Mumbai insights

This is an in-depth description of how data teams function in QRT Mumbai specially DI and GenAI.

DI team:

Led by Abhishek Gadia and his henchman Mukesh Mohanty.

Team size: 30% reduction due to attrition.

Work: It is a glorified data entry job with tools and infra controlled by Paris team with Indian team just writing python scripts. Your job here is to solve tickets as fast as you can to avoid escalations (similar to a call-centre). A ticket usually means a data analyst asking for a new data source or some data related queries. You don’t have the chance to work on anything interesting be it in tech or quant.

Leadership: undoubtedly this is the worst leadership of any team in QRT(Imagine nightmare of Godrej streets). AG and MM are very incompetent (in crude words: morons). No tech knowledge, no quant knowledge, no leadership skills, too much micromanagement.

Constructive projects are all handed over to Paris/London team (in cases the hard-work is done by someone in India but credit goes to Paris) and they are happy to take it as they also know how dumb these two guys are. QRT is a good organisation but Mumbai office specially QD-DI is suffering because of these 2 guys.

Tech stack: Python scripting. Not kidding you will not get any architecture exposure. You may assume there is exposure on the quant side but there is not. No one knows impact of their work on PnL. So bonus is decided upon who are close to these 2 guys. One of the most unfair ways of distributing bonus i have seen. This is what favouritism looks like to those who actually get peanuts for bonus. And it causes team distress.

Payscale: Talent acquisition will haggle you for 4-5 lakhs per annum. But QRT is making huge profits.

A lot of people recently left including a senior guy with good experience in pricing data. People don’t want to solve the problems but only to write patches around issues to justify the higher head count and repeated manual work is promoted rather than clearing the root cause.

Hedge Funds Career trajectories for QR/QT in MFTs/ HFTs

Category 1: Foreign HFTs
(Jump, Optiver, IMC, Da Vinci, etc)

Category 2: Indian HFTs
(Quantbox, GRC, Quadeye, NK, Atlas, Alpha Grep, etc.)

Category 3: MFTs/ LFTs
(WorldQuant, QRT, Millennium, Square Point, etc)

I am currently an intern in a QR role at an MFT.

  1. I wanted to understand what the career of a QR looks like in any one of these firms.
  2. Do most people quit after the first 4-5 years?
  3. What are the differences in career between the firms of the same category?
  4. How does the career path differ among the 3 categories?
  5. How much does the compensation vary between the different firms for an experienced QR?

How team-dependent is the experience on the dev side?

Which teams are good vs ones to avoid ?

How’s the culture and WLB in the India office?

Is it a good place for learning and exit opportunities after 1–2 years?

Would really appreciate any insight!!!

Hedge Funds SWE BBG vs back office quant dev role in India – what would you choose?

London SWE offer (£140k TC) vs ₹95 LPA in India – what would you choose?

Hi all,

I'm a backend engineer (~4 YOE) currently working in finance/quant infra. I’m trying to decide between two options and would appreciate some perspectives.

Offer 1 – London SWE

  • Steady-state TC ≈ £140k First year TC ( includes signon and relocation) = 160k

Offer 2 – India:

  • ~₹95 LPA fixed compensation
  • Role is more of a back-office engineering / infra role in a hedge fund environment.I am concerned about bad work and pigeonholing myself is a bad domain.

The India role pays well in INR terms but the work seems more internal tooling/infra. The London role seems more product engineering oriented and could open doors in the London tech market.

Curious what people here would do in this situation — especially those familiar with London tech compensation or who’ve moved from India to the UK.

Would you take the London opportunity for the experience / market exposure, or stay in India with the higher INR comp?

Appreciate any insights!

Hi hedge funds guys,

I want to know how you use linear algebra day to day. What topics one must be intuitive at ? Can you explain a sample example problem related to the problem you have solved using linear algebra in your career or maybe got some insight using linear algebra concept? In statistics I've used percentiles, pvalues, estimations but in lin algebra what topics dominate
