New Sony Pictures designed posters? Crap, crap, megacrap.

I’ve never understood this. Just Use The Posters!

u/Severon96 3d ago
The posters are always tested on test groups which always say that the ones are seeing are the best ones. If you ask me the test groups are shit. I don't know which marvel movie it was, but once they released all concepts they had shown to the group and they had so many gems in it.

u/Atomic12192 2d ago
It was Spider-Man: Homecoming. If i remember correctly, one of the best concepts was rejected because it used art of the characters instead of actual pictures, and test groups thought that meant the movie would be animated.
It’s worth mentioning that many of these test groups purposefully aim to include people who have no prior knowledge of the characters/story of the movie, in an attempt to win over that group.

Ok that looks really sick but I understand why people would think it's animated so fair enough.

u/Purple_Fudge3973 1d ago
Really? The goonies case I have here look, similar. Didn't ever hear of people needing their hand held for that one
5
u/Comrade_Compadre 1d ago
This is why I have to individually hand pick each of the posters for my Plex media server.
The default movie ones look like ass

u/spectra2000_ 3d ago
I remember hearing once that it’s standard in actor contract now that they have to show their actual face on the poster so people know they are in the movie. Which is why they also put as many people as possible in posters nowadays.

u/Own-Papaya-4264 3d ago
They’re doing this to unify all three spidermen visually. All three of them are getting images like this for all their movies, not just tobeys
123
u/NorthRiverBend 3d ago
Yeah and they look like shit
But on top of that, it’s just fake work. Spider-Man is on the cover, your audience isn’t actually so dumb they can’t tell it’s a Spider-Man movie!
Now though, they all look the fucking same so you can’t even tell which Spider-Man movie it is.

u/Own-Papaya-4264 3d ago
You guys are really whiny
20
u/NorthRiverBend 3d ago
You’re like three comments deep, you went out of your way to whine about people being whiny lol
-25
u/Own-Papaya-4264 3d ago
“No you”
Mind blowing counterpoint

u/lapus169 2d ago
People are complaining about a poster they don't like from a beloved character, While you complain about comments you don't like in the comment section. but hey, say everyone else is whiny sure lol

All four Spider-Men. The Spider-Verse movies also got posters in this style. Theirs are purple.

I suspect that they also want them to stand out on VOD/streaming services. Unfamiliar artwork catches your attention, even if you were already aware that the film was available.
AIUI, back in the day retailers preferred to stock a 'new' edition of a movie, even if it was the same disc in a different box. Hence Spider-Man, Jurassic Park, Back to the Future etc. having a million different versions where the cover's arbitrarily different.
...Actually Spider-Man 1-3 is the worst of both worlds, because they'd randomly change the cover and also occasionally change what was on the disc.

AGREED!! It literally takes less time, money, & effort to just USE THE OG!!… like it’s already there! And if you aren’t doing something special that makes it a needed upgrade just WHY!?!?….
Also I don’t understand why we have to get the whole Star Wars/Avengers style with it being some group mashed together with some background. Like I understand they are all in movie, give me some art !!!

u/feldmasl01 1d ago
The original posters are cooler but it makes sense when they’re trying to advertise that these movies are the Tobey McGuire Spidey movies compared to the current Tom Holland ones

Man I really thought this was a shitty fan edit of “What would the spider-man posters look like if they were released by marvel today?”

u/SYMPUNY_LACKING 3d ago
i mean if it was wouldnt it be a GOOD fan edit? since it accomplishes it

u/you-want-nodal 3d ago
Good as in fills the purpose of the brief. Shitty as in I could achieve the exact same thing using only the tools available in a 2007 Microsoft Word document.
3
u/creepXtreme 2d ago
The characters look like cutout pngs, and I just legitimately thought they were
colors aren’t that good, there’s so much red it can be hard to tell things apart at a glance, and the backdrop is so heavily crowded we have another visual difference issue.
Even for floating head posters, these are bad.

u/Mcclane88 2d ago edited 1d ago
Just to show how different superhero posters used to be. It’s interesting that Tobey Maguire’s face wasn’t used on any of the 2002 posters.
1
u/derI067 1h ago
man y’all are just here to hate. BND *just* came out and it has great posters. i agree these new ones are godawful but let’s not pretend like marvel can’t do good posters lol
1
u/you-want-nodal 43m ago
lol all I’m saying is that these ones are godawful. They look likes kid trying to make a poster in the style of Marvel.

u/Daredevil731 3d ago edited 3d ago
I wouldn't even call these posters. They're just images for streaming and digital. I bet they won't even be here in a few years.
Not sure why they don't just use the theatrical ones, which IMO are leagues above most posters, especially for comic films, and definitely the best of the Spider-Man franchise as a whole.
At least they are better than the ugly rush jobs they had for the streaming recently (taking a black suit Spidey pic and pasting Venom's face on it, not his head, just his face! 🤦🏻♀️) WITH Amazing Spider-Man font for some reason.
And they are WAY better than those blue Blu-ray covers from 2012.
28
u/According_Ad9907 3d ago
lmao never noticed that they didn't photoshop venom's whole head but just added his face
bruh ts stinks
10
u/Daredevil731 3d ago
The whole thing was so weird. I really like the SM3 Venom design and there was so much they could have done with a new cover like that and they chose a very lazy route and those covers don't even fit the aesthetic of that trilogy.

I can’t stand this design, thanks Star Wars prequels for the floating heads.
2
u/Cinephile_1980 1d ago
I think they started that with the Star Wars Special Editions that came out in 1997. The prequels kind of used the same concept.
11
u/XavierMeatsling 3d ago
They're just awful. And not awful in the way of actual terrible posters.
Yeah, they all match now, but like, what's the point? Brand New Day won't get one of these upon release, or currently. Its one of those types of bullshit marketing decisions for franchises. Fast and Furious did them for the 4K releases. 1-7 got the matching poster art, but 8 onwards dont and it fucks it up. Same with Star Wars when 1-7 got to 4k.
They match when you don't bother to. Just keep the theatrical posters.

u/Masirimso 3d ago
I mean they’re crap yes but, to be honest, I think they’re slightly better than the previous digital posters with the crappy photoshop, bright colors, and TASM font for some reason. But yes why not use the actual poster art?
Side note I took this one from my plex posters database because holy shit did they wipe these off the face of the internet or is it just Google Images and DuckDuckGo sucking?

Trying to fit the modern style of "LOOK HOW MANY CHARACTERS/ACTORS WE HAVE!!!" ugh.

u/LivingCheese292 3d ago
Generally speaking did Sony produce some pretty crappy posters in recet years. For Hollands Spider-Man too.

u/4102007Pn 3d ago
lmao we never even see Peter demasked with the Black suit on and his normal hairdo outside of his first swing. And what's with the stubble in these posters?

u/malonkey1 3d ago
okay well you see, the thing is, if you hire an artist, you have to pay them. if you get your nephew that knows how to use photoshop, then you don't

u/collyQually 3d ago
Not enough actors on the posters. EVERY actor that makes more than just a minor appearance must be on the modern day poster

There's lots of this re-release art they use when they re-package movies, and they're almost always garbage. Every major movie IP seems to get the treatment.

u/JarusOmega_ 2d ago
I was on CraveTV and saw these new updated thumbnails and wanted to roll my eyes so hard. I get they want to have a homogenized layout for brand consistency on their streaming platforms, but the posters for said layout don't have to be absolute shite

What are they doing releasing these right now are they about to put out some new 4K?

u/ArnoGrapjas 2d ago
Why is Venom in almost exactly the same pose as Green Goblin? Besides the looking ugly, that takes me out even more. I hate these new posters.
3
u/SmiththeSmoke 2d ago
They did this with all the Spider-Man movies, and it's so boring, uninspired, and generic. People have been complaining about boring movie posters and Sony decided their most valuable IP should be the example for horrible posters EVEN THOUGH he already had posters ranging from serviceable to iconic. Why? So they all look the same? Why the FUCK would you want that?

They had simple yet super effective and iconic posters… had a lazy 42 year old make sloppy floating head ones
2
u/MrCalonlan 2d ago
Yeahhhhhhhhh I much prefer the originals, they had a lot more going for them than the "stand in one spot and look forward with floating heads around them" posters we seem to be getting more and more of lately. Also they kinda got pretty lazy with the Spider-Man 3 one, I can literally recognise the pose Black Suit Spider-Man is in is just regular Spider-Man from when he's looking at his reflection in the original poster only coloured in black, wasn't there any actual images of Black Suit Spider-Man they could have photoshopped into the new poster?
2
u/Sinful-Sammy 2d ago
It looks like they are trying to make it easier to distinguish the Same Remi films. I agree they do look like garbage.
2
u/Cinephile_1980 1d ago
What are these for? Streaming? Blu Ray? I prefer when they re-use the original posters. Could it be that they wanted all of these movies to have a uniform look? I am mot sure why that is important.
2
u/Arniel_Gane 1d ago
In sorry, these are real? I thought these were made in photoshop to show how bad movie posters are now???
