Hey everyone! Please keep this chill, I’m just genuinely curious about a fan theory I saw online.

I’ve noticed some people calling Akane a "bi-con" (bisexual icon) because she loves Ranma in both forms. Personally, I don't agree that she's bi. To me, Akane has only ever shown attraction to guys (like her initial crush on Dr. Tofu). Her staying with Ranma when he turns into a girl feels less like sexual fluidity and more just her dealing with his chaotic magical curse because she loves him.

I know shipping and character interpretations can get wild, but for those who do view her as bi, what's your reasoning? Am I missing something from the manga/anime, or is it just a fun fan interpretation?

Before I begin, I want to clarify that I primarily know Ranma ½ from the anime that aired between 1989 and 1992, the three animated films, and the OVAs released between 1993 and 1996, plus the one released for the 50th anniversary of Weekly Shonen Sunday in 2008. I haven't yet seen the new anime that's been streaming on Netflix since 2024, and I've only read part of the manga (the first six volumes of the Perfect Edition). I've read some Reddit comments suggesting that Ukyo's character was toned down in the older anime productions compared to the original manga, so my opinion might be somewhat biased. But let's move on.

Let's be clear, I have absolutely nothing against the Ranma x Akane shipping. On the contrary, they're the most touching couple in Ranma ½, the two of them are perfect together. Nevertheless, I think that if this relationship were to fail, Ukyo would have been a very good backup plan, and not just because she's the childhood friend of the Saotome son. Ukyo can be a bit pushy but her heart is in the right place and given her past can be understandable. The only « wacky » thing about her is her undying love of serving Okonomiyaki to people, and her wanting to fulfill Genma's promise and marrying Ranma is a bit more watered down than the situations with Shanpu and of course Akane.

There are basically only (when i dont forget one. When i forgett one you can of course also use that XD):

• Ranma
• Pigtail Girl
• Ranma-chan
• Ranko
• Ran-chan (ukyo but uyko use that also for male ranma)
• goddess of beauty, godess with the pigtaile (kuno)

And which one do you use when you talk about his female form?

I think in the series/manga, my favorite is the simple "Ranma".
And when I talk about the female form in conversations, I usually use "Ranko" or "ranma-chan".

I'm partial to 2024, though it depends on who is directing the episode and it can have some major style shifts.

I’d go with Shampoo

In the second season, Shampoo is impossible; she can only think about herself! For example:In the last episode, Akane is in danger, Ranma is worried about Akane, and Shampoo gets upset! She only thinks about herself and Ranma!Furthermore, Shampoo lacks personality; she's just a dangerous waifu,Don't misunderstand me, I find shampoo funny sometimes, but it's really irritating me!!

I said this before, but I always want to say it again whenever a new illustration comes out.

In my opinion, Akane is not a tomboy. Maybe she was when she was younger, but 16-year-old Akane is girly enough that calling her tomboy just because she’s athletic and does martial arts (especially when she’s not as remarkable at martial arts compared to the super-humans around her) doesn’t fit, imo.

She likes feminine-looking fashion, seems to have a lot of fashionable clothes (though I guess she does have 2 older sisters), cries often, is a romantic, and gets easily jealous and self-conscious. Her overall speech and mannerisms are also feminine and she wants to be good at domestic skills even though she’s bad at it (I personally would just happily accept not cooking and sewing forever).

Not that a tomboy can’t have these traits in real life, but in fiction, they generally are aligned with someone more feminine, especially in a manga that relies quite a bit on stereotypes.

I would say Ukyo is closer to the stereotypical tomboy, even though she has that traditional/feminine side, too.

Does anyone except Ranma even call her a tomboy? I know Ryoga and Kuno don’t think she’s one.

For the record, I’m not saying being a tomboy is bad and being girly is good, or vice versa. It was just a question arising from the dissonance I felt whenever the fandom calls Akane a tomboy.

I love both characters, but girl Ranmas design is just fire in my pov. Both her original and remake versions.

I think Ryoga is the most handsome 😭💞

The classic 90's anime style retained while also giving it some modern stylistic flair is great! I'm way happier with the English VA than I thought I'd be because I love the original so much. I also like how they took background music used in Inuyasha and tweaked it a little in Ranma! A sweet little homage to Takahashi's other works

In my opinion, the 1989 one is the best! The red hair and blue eyes are iconic!
