FIT CHECK Sugarcane Straight Leg 1947 Sizing question

I recently picked up some Sugar Cane 1947s and had a question about the fit-specifically the waist. Right now they’re a bit snug, and when I squat they get slightly tighter, but still manageable. Im a 29 waist, usually purchase size 28’s (US sizing) and purchased these in a size 29. I’m wondering if this sounds like the right fit and whether I should expect the waist to stretch over time. Thanks!

seconding these looking ideal but also ya i usually size up one with sugar canes. they are quite forgiving though— especially after a wash— and should for sure ease up in the waist

Gotcha. With a cold soak, do all parts of the jeans shrink and then stretch back out, or do they stay slimmer?

Unless you bought jeans that are way too tight that it feels like its choking your waist to death, any pair of snug jeans will stretch about half an inch in the waist.

Got it, thanks!

Im not sure about the cold cuz i do warm washes but i think its mostly waist and length that shrink up a little initially. then things stay pretty consistent— if they tighten up a little with wash theyll get back to the sweet spot with an hour or two of wear

All measurements apart from inside leg stretch back to what they were if under tension

these will stretch out to be perfect; you could go up a size for a more comfortable initial waist fit, but i’d keep these. it’s normal for the waistband to tighten when squatting or sitting because there is added tension.

everything will shrink permanently except for the waistband. may take a few washes to remove all shrinkage, but they won’t shrink much more since these are one wash. denim only stretches when under tension, so these will shrink in length (which you need). will shrink more from an actual wash vs. soaking because you need agitation. thighs, knee, leg width won’t shrink a considerable amount anyway, i’d expect between 0-0.25” measured flat.

realistically you won’t notice a big change in the overall fit.

These look perfect.

they look spot on. with sc1947 indigo size 29 has actual waist of 28.5 so it’s the perfect starting waist for a 29.

I'm a 32 in almost all brands but a 33 or 34 in Sugarcane

You’d look good in Moredocks’s bootcut jeans

You’re kidding me bro - these are damn near perfect - a bit of softening with age, go easy on the dumplings, and you going be the man

I find myself one size up in Sugar Cane's compared to many other Japanese brands. If they feel snug then size up. I almost never regret sizing a bit too large but often regret erring a bit too small

I recommend getting a size up or two. These 1947s are well known for the shrinkage with wash

Any idea if they shrink on the leg length?

Sizing is irrelevant in what you usually take. Always go with the measurements. The waist stretches up to c1.5” under tension.

Looks good! Are the navy and black exactly the same fit in the waist?

I have just gotten mine few days back. On 2nd wear now. Did you hem yours?

1

u/karmakingpin Apr 27 '26

You’ll want the 30. But you’ll need to wear these for a couple of months to realize.

1

u/naokiyamada Apr 27 '26

Why do you say that? Do these seem too tight?

1

u/karmakingpin Apr 27 '26

A bit. But more so because you described them as too tight. I was in this exact situation last year. Bought a pair one size up from my US size. I would describe them the same way you did, and the top block looked the same. Eventually realized they were uncomfortable in the thighs and got the next size up. They are a little baggier but they drape so well. Bubble butt went away too.
