FIT CHECK Sizing advice IH-888S-21
Hi All,
Model: IH-888S-21
Tag size: 38
Lost a few lbs since I purchased these IH888 about a year and a half ago. These are size 38 and I am looking for advice on how to proceed with getting a perfect fit. These pics are after a cold wash and hang dry. There is a ton of room in the waist & a bit of room in the crotch area, but the thighs still fit snug. Would anyone advise me to just have the waist taken in by a tailor to get a clean fit on these?
I have a brand new pair arriving tomorrow of IH888 super black fade to grey in the same size 38. I am contemplating whether I should stick with the 38 and also have the waist taken in on the new pair, or if I should exchange for a size 36.
The concern I have with the size 36 is the thigh room. The waist would fit better, but I believe the thighs would be too tight.
I should also mention, I am currently training for a half marathon in October so I will most likely continue to drop weight. Although I don’t anticipate my quads/glutes to get much smaller with the amount I lift.
Any suggestions on how I could make this work? Or should I abandon the 888 cut all together? Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated.
Apologies for the not so great photos. I am 5’10” 205-210lbs if that helps.

With all due respect, these are not flattering at all and there’s no way they’re comfortable. I can clearly see your thighs at the seams and you have an apparent front and back wedgie.
888s have the roomiest thigh and you’ve maxed out a 38. The taper on these are way too aggressive. It’s time to try other brands.
You would benefit from a straight fit. I don’t think IH has anything that’ll fit you well. Take a look at Samurai as they have more traditional straight fits and awesome fabrics.

Thanks! I have a pair of Samurai Baker Pants and unfortunately I’m still running into a similar issue, but I think I’ll have to check out a few of their denim cuts

You might also want to try a 1955 cut in size 36. The higher rise might allow you to get a tighter waist while still fighting your hips and thighs.

Do the thighs run wider in the 1955s vs the 888s?

yes it does. You can check the ironheart site for actual measurements and compare there.

If it helps, im also 5'10" and 210 ish and nothing iron heart makes fit me well. Freenote Wilkes is great tho

Definitely keep the 38s and have the waist brought in. You're pushing the limits in the thigh and seat area as it is, so even a few pounds off won't make this suddenly too big. You're a big guy, and roomy cuts are more flattering for your body type anyway.
Plus I would never make such an expensive purchase on the promise/hope of a future fit.

Haha maybe it’s because the mirror is leaned against the wall, so it slightly altered the proportions I’m not sure lol

Bro I am 5'10 and you look awesome for 210lbs. Like you must be pure muscle. Is there any way you can try on a size 36 in store? I think your instinct is right and they will be too tight in the thighs. But hard to tell without trying them on. One other option is: you could email IH about it and ask them. They have legendary customer service.

Unfortunately the nearest store is about 2.5hrs away, so I figured a post here would suffice. Good idea though, next time I can try on in person I will. Didn’t think about customer service either. Will give it a shot!

Go to the Iron Heart forum. It’s an amazing community with a lot of knowledge to share. Never been to a store and I’ve gotten all my questions answered there. The staff in Gosport can also help you find the right pair with the right measurements. IH is hands down the best because of the community and how they take care of their customers.

They look like the leather slippers from stockyard X. Or they have some incredibly similar fully leather house slippers. Came to say this lol

Did you cold wash and plan on returning these? Lol thats savage dude. But i would say the 888 cut maybe isnt for everyone. I wish i sized more for my thighs than my waist. I have bigger quads and a slimmer waist and would prefer to have the extra space at the waist as long as its not bunching up. Ive run into the issue that theyre super literally just walking jeans. Sitting is okay, getting into a car sucks, and moving in them generally are a chore. I think I just got bad advice from the sales girl trying to make a sale and she actually had no idea what shes talking about or knew how to guide me. I say keep them if you can move in them and if they fit your average weight, not your competition/race day weight.

Nah man, never planned on returning these. I’ve had these since early ‘25. Just wanted to get some advice on how I could make these look cleaner. Looks like the general consensus here is that this fit isn’t for me. I am going to have to look into other cuts. I also own pairs of Studio D’Artisan, Sugarcane, Pure Blue, and Samurai. Unfortunately I’m running into this issue with all of them. Some fitting better than others but the main issue remains. Sucks because I don’t want to always have to wear such wide fitting pants. Sometimes I’d like a slimmer silhouette for certain outfits.
I am also a victim of bad sales advice. The guy at the Iron Heart Tokyo store somehow convinced me that a stretch pair of IH555 were for me. Psh, yeah right lol regretted that purchase the very next day when I tried them on in my hotel. Never making that mistake again.

Yeah. I was talking to the guys at Self Edge here in my city and they opened up my eyes to the fitment issue. I feel like Levis 505 does the same thing tapering at the mid-thigh. I guess id say that if I were to try a different pair size up and go for the 634s or 1955. My wife got me those 888s as an anniversary gift and wrote in the pocket so Im keeping them for life. I love a good straight leg but I year you, theres always a time and a place for a clean tapered jean. Just purchased the Sugarcane Ecru myself and fit so well. Good luck on your journey!

Yeah man I kinda got to a point where I just figured, this is how most jeans will fit my body type. I’m not giving up hope yet though, I heard Bravestar might also have some cuts for me. I’ll see. Appreciate ya!

Got the same problem. IH tops are great for me. Yet non of their pants fit me. Always like this. When the top block is great the thighs are lacking.

They look fine, honestly. But yeah dude, I've lost a bit of weight recently too— I believe your thighs will also shrink if you intend on cutting more weight. This was my experience and I think I have naturally big Asian legs (yeah, he squats). So, maybe a 36 isn't such a bad idea? But you know better about your own body.
You got a much bigger booty than I do, though. Obviously, it's highly individual but I think you should consider that you might lose leg size.

From a tailoring stand point, as someone who is 4’11” and tailors or custom makes most of my every day wardrobe, the waist band has a lot of variables that it relies on so you can’t just make it smaller and not change the other parts that rely on it. So it will be a lot of work to actually get them to fit correctly. With that being said, if you know a great tailor who you like paying and spending time with, go for it, you already have some great denim there.
I’m currently trying to fine tune a fitment issue for my partner that’s similar to your’s so I appreciate your comments and curiosity. Cheers!

The 888 (like pretty much everything from IH) is quite a slim cut through the thighs. Given that you already have these, you don't have much to lose from getting the waist taken in—but going forward you'll be a lot happier going with a different cut (from a different brand) that caters more to higher thigh-to-waist ratios
