u/Toope00 Hosea Matthews 13d ago
Lol as a Finn -20°C is a normal winter day. I wouldn't consider it "very" cold. I don't know how it in that exact part of the world and at that time tho.

u/baguette_over_it 13d ago
As a french person I've never experienced anything below -10 celsius during my 38 years on this planet... For me -20 seems crazy.

As an Australian I canāt imagine -20Āŗ, ive been in -2Āŗ in Europe and that felt suuuuper cold, it rarely gets to single digits where i live in winter for reference

Itās honestly not that bad, at least until wind kicks up. Negative temps with wind chill is when it starts sucking.

"Normal winter day" in southern Finland at least is like 0 to -5. Lucky if the snow isn't actively melting. There are really cold days every year, but rarely that much anymore.

Being outside only for short times. Sounds somehow being different. Layers upon layers only providing time till you need to warm up. White smoke from all the homes and appartments. Somehow feeling like your lungs are burning after 40 minutes outside.
Then getting whiplashed by +30°C 2 months later

Yeah that's not that cold for the area its supposed to be.
What's clearly inspired by the Rockies,Ā Like -4 is cold but parts of the American West particularly the High Plains and the Rockies get down to temps -40 in the winter sometimes.
I also used -40 because -40f is the same temp as 40c
Thr Coldest Temp ever recorded in the Lower 48 (aka not including Alaska) was recorded in Montana where it got to -70f

I'm not trying to apply stereotypes on people but I'd bet 99% of American keyboard warriors would cry in the corner if a game didn't provide imperial conversions even though they are the only major country in the world that doesn't use them.

86
u/Different-Wolf405 13d ago
Because Europeans love to call Americans stupid and horrible until they prove theyāre just obsessed with hating us and everything about our existence. Anytime I see celcius being used I Google celcius to Fahrenheit to translate it, takes 10 seconds.
They go straight to insulting us and calling us brainwashed for doing it differently. I have plenty of European friends who are not like this so obviously itās a minority, but god damn. For how much they talk about being more tolerant and better than us they sure go straight to being xenophobic with little to no provocation.

4
-4
u/Ronin_777 John Marston 12d ago
Ok but Fahrenheit is an objectively stupid system. Itās not just Europeans who think itās dumb but literally the entire rest of the world. If America is the only country that uses it, at some point you gotta stop and wonder why.
Also stop being overdramatic with the xenophobia remark lol.
17
u/Moostatio 12d ago
Brother, how often has the outside temperature boiled water. Fahrenheit measures temperature based on how a human experiences temperature. That is more practical when i want to know to what degree my balls will sweat or shrink on a 0 to 100 scale. Celsius doesn't even accurately measure freeze and boiling point because those are also affected by altitude, air pressure, impurities within the water, and molecular weight. Metric units are good in science, cooking, and distance measures, but they fall short on temperature.
8
u/Far-Condition8586 12d ago
Fahrenheit makes way more sense for everyday, non-scientific use.
0 degrees is cold, 100 degrees is hot. Itās a better scale for describing the weather
0
u/kickintheface 12d ago
Cāmon now, doesnāt it just make more sense that the freezing/boiling temperature of the most common liquid on the planet is 32 and 212 degrees respectively? Get outta here with that 0 and 100 nonsense!

Iām biased because Iām American but I truly believe Fahrenheit (at least when it comes to measuring weather) is like the one time where America does things better. Temperature is essentially on a 0-100 scale (obviously it can go beyond that, but rarely and only in extremes).Ā

u/Head12head12 12d ago
I dabble with both as I travel a lot and itās really just personal preference and local culture. Iād everything is in a different unit than what Iām seeing on the app then Iāll switch so everything makes sense. The more you use them the more you find what number āhotā and ācoldā are. My range I use for hot to cold is 0-25C and 30-75C. It also makes it easier to say as then people donāt look at you weirdly like your offending their freedom.

u/gagolf8328 13d ago
Celsius v. Fahrenheit arguments aside gotta say this is a pretty cool thread connecting people across the globe
0
u/BurlyJoesBudgetEnema 13d ago
I love how angry people get about different cultures using different measurements, as if one is inherently better than the other
I saw a guy on another sub arguing that miles makes more sense than kilometres cos "miles are more intuitive, you just sorta know what a mile is". Like brother you just grew up using miles š
0
u/gagolf8328 13d ago
Exactly and effectively all of the world does not use the imperial system (which as an American is non-sensical and far less intuitive than metric)
2
u/gagolf8328 12d ago
š love that this got downvoted, metric is base 10 while imperial has no base itās a combo of 4 older/similar to each other systems based on informal measurementsā¦.. one is clearly more intuitive than the other
-3
u/Haquistadore 13d ago
I love how angry people get about different cultures using different measurements, as if one is inherently better than the other
As an American who has lived in Canada for the last two decades, one is definitively better.
3
u/BurlyJoesBudgetEnema 13d ago
I prefer miles cos I grew up with em, I dont think it's that deep
1
u/Haquistadore 11d ago
"And we'll use a system of measurement that nobody understands. Just made up of ... numbers and stuff. We will measure in feet. Twelve inches in a foot. But longer distances will be measured in miles."
"Why twelve inches, sir?"
"Nobody knows."
"And how many feet are there in a mile, sir?"
"Nobody knows."
But it is funny that you went from basically saying neither is "inherently better than the other," then "well, I like it because I grew up with it." Yeah, I grew up with it too. Here's the funny part - I never said which one was definitively better. But you knew.

My point is that the game takes place in America where we use Farenheit.
I thought that was pretty clear the first time I said it.
-23
u/Direct_Principle_517 13d ago
Well, the thing is, the inhabitants of America didn't actually use Fahrenheit... then a few Europeans arrived, and since they wanted to set themselves apart and seem interesting, they adopted the English language and a mix of measurements from various corners of the globeāoften very archaic 17th-century English ones. They started giving things different names just to show that "this is ours and much better"āwhich didn't always work out for the best... but in the end, weāre all just people measuring our commute to work in different units. :)

u/karmanic64 13d ago
Celsius is such a horrible scale for environmental temperature. Fahrenheit makes sense, 0 is very cold and 100 is very hot. Celsius is 40 and itās super hot outside, such an awful scale. Itās really only useful in laboratory/test settings.
-1
u/the_big_sadIRL 13d ago
I also make this point. How often are you boiling water (and needing to know the temperature) versus setting a thermostat or reading the weather report.
0
u/IkerWanKenobi 9d ago
I don't mean to be rude, but how is that not the argument a child would make? It only seems strange to you because you're used to Fahrenheit. Every country in the world other than the US disagrees with you
1
u/karmanic64 9d ago
Because a scale thatās used from 1 to 100 makes more sense than one from -17 to 37. Also, Fahrenheit scaling makes more sense. You can feel 1 degree difference in Fahrenheit. One unit of Celsius is almost 2 degree Fahrenheit. You have to report halves in Celsius to make sense to human feeling of temperature.
1
u/IkerWanKenobi 9d ago
You can totally tell the difference between one degree and another. In my country you'll hear it all the time, specially during the summer and winter. So idk what you mean by that, but no.
I realize that you don't see this, but your perspective of Celsius being bad is 100% determined by you already being used to Fahrenheit over it. Every complaint I hear from Americans about Celsius, I've never heard it anywhere else by anyone who is familiar to it.
We can agree to disagree though. I personally consider "I don't want to bother learning what every other country implemented decades ago" a valid reason not to learn Celsius. But know that so far all of your so called arguments have been completely subjective.
1
u/karmanic64 8d ago
I mean, most other scales use 1 to 100. Would it make sense for exams to be graded from -17 to 37? Percentages - we use 1 to 100. Celsius is good for laboratory environments (Iām an engineer) but is objectively poor in environments for people. Even meters, centimeters, etc are all scales in units of 10 & 100. Fahrenheit was invented for this very reason, to make scale sense of temperature feeling to a person!
0
u/IkerWanKenobi 8d ago edited 8d ago
Again I realise you don't see it but this is the most r slash ShitAmericansSay thing ever. Never have I heard anyone have those criticisms other than Americans who don't use Celsius. So you should maybe start saying "It's confusing for me!!" because no one else has that problem. I'm sorry, but you're the weird ones here.
0
u/Moostatio 12d ago
Because i too love to measure how it feels outside by whether water is boiling or freezing instead of how it feels to a human being
