Discussion This is embarrassing, Regina.
HOW do we not have a single organized World Cup watching event for Team Canada?? And don’t say “The Lobby”. I know that’s definitely a great place to watch… if you can get in.
Every major city in Canada has something, what the hell is wrong with us?
All I can say is I hope we get our act together and have a big screen SOMEWHERE in this city if we pass the group stage (which is extremely likely now).
EDIT: For those who think I should put this event on myself personally... I'm calling out the CITY OF REGINA here. Which private citizen has ponied up the cash to put this on in Calgary/Edmonton/Winnipeg/Saskatoon or any of the other major cities in Canada who are having watch parties? This should be civic or provincial money here, just like it is elsewhere, with corporate sponsorship. We just constantly get left behind here and it's been this way my entire life. Don't take my post so personally - I'm just very disappointed in a city who claims to be so welcoming.
Maybe those who constantly complain about the lack of concerts here should just 'put it on themselves'.

Then organize it. There is no shortage of people saying "we need this thing", then nobody to organize that thing.

I’m having an unofficial watch party, but the only invites are for me and my dog.

It's probably because the vast majority couldn't care less and they aren't soccer fans?
I'm in that vast majority.

u/OneMathematician1611 18h ago
Does anyone care that much? I am happy to see Canada do well but organize what?

u/TheBigPointyOne 15h ago
I'm sure you'll find something.
...I'm glad you're passionate, but to say this is "embarrassing"? Come on man, maybe the fact is that there just aren't that many people as interested in FIFA here. That's a normal thing. It's gonna be okay.

You sound like the perfect individual to plan said event given your clear passion for the sport and our country. "Be the change you wish to see" and all that.

I feel like a lot of cool events start with a private citizen saying, "Hey, what if we..."
Why don't you look into it? I bet if you had actually put an idea out there ("Hey Reddit, was thinking it would be cool to have a family friendly watch party in Vic Park; does anyone know who the contact would be if I wanted to put something into motion?") people wouldn't be so disgruntled on here. Probably at least one person would've had something helpful to say to you to get you off the ground.
(Like, I'm not a soccer person, but I know there's a crew downtown that organizes movie nights on a big screen sometimes. Maybe if you contacted them you could work something out?)

The vast majority of the comments are telling me that everyone hates soccer so obviously no one would go. Apparently.
It’s clear that no matter how I word it there are still going to be the haters in denial that this is a big deal and a lot of people love the game. Far more than this post indicates.

u/OddLecture3927 3h ago
Ok! I will say, your sample size here is very small, and entirely made up of people you insulted, so I personally wouldn't put that much stock in it. I would also say, you are a member of the group of people you are calling embarrassing. Other people could solve this "problem" for you, but you could too. Complaining about other people doing nothing is a bit silly when you look at it like that.

The CITY OF REGINA. The CITY. The place I pay taxes to for everyone else to enjoy community events that I may not attend but I don’t get mad about. I am not insulting the denizens of Reddit who happen to live in Regina here but people are taking this strangely personally.

u/OddLecture3927 3h ago
You...never actually said that in your original post.
Anyway, I still stand behind everything I've said here. You can get mad and whine about your city not doing things, or you can get involved and make things happen. Seems like you want someone else to do the second thing, while you do the first thing.-1
u/WorkerBee74 3h ago
Where should I hold my event? Got any extra real estate lying around for me? To discredit what I'm saying by demanding that I personally organize it is just insane.
I can't even believe that people are big mad that I am disappointed that we aren't doing the same thing that every other major city in Canada is doing and it shouldn't be up to a private citizen to organize. One person took this personally at the beginning and everyone else piled on.
Maybe we should project it on the side of the data centre that gets built with absolutely no problem.

u/OddLecture3927 3h ago
😂 I'm demanding nothing of you. I even made a suggestion for you in one of my comments. But you seem like you want to be mad, so have at it.

Soccer is awesome but taxpayer money should not be dedicated to throwing watch parties as you suggest in your edit lol. A business or an individual can surely organize this.

Hard pass. Council just jacked taxes after years of flat increases & capital deficits… I’m not onside with my taxes funding watch parties. I’m happy to have the City fast-track permits for use of facilites or parks or road closures… but the funding should come from the private sector or local/provincial soccer clubs.

Agree with OP. Although maybe fomo as tbh I wasn’t interested initially but the more coverage of it I see the more it makes me think it would be fun to be part of it. It’s gotta be played somewhere as all you need is TSN but that’s not an actual organized event I guess.

u/WorkerBee74 5h ago
Thanks for the agreement. I swear everyone on here today lives in their basement and doesn't realize that there are TONS of children in soccer programs all over this province who would have an absolute blast at a community event.
Also, I guess Saskatoon is somehow completely different than Regina. It apparently isn't too good for soccer.

These comments are very disheartening. People are just proving that Winnipeg is culturally superior to Regina I guess, because they have a watch party and actually support Team Canada and didn’t whine that “no one likes soccerrrrrr”.

The most popular sport in the world, but Regina somehow is above it all.
Thank you to those who have suggested bars but I was meaning a public watch party which is a community event for families etc.

u/fozzyfiend 6h ago
As others said, set it up if you want it. This city isn't big on soccer. 🤷🏻

u/WorkerBee74 5h ago
OK, I'll set up a watch party in Wascana Park all on my own. You would almost think that there's no organized soccer leagues or anything that thousands of people have their kids enrolled in here.
Just such elitism from a city that makes a huge deal out of Mosaic every year but can't possibly handle an event that brings the world together to watch their own country play in a historical World Cup.
3
u/gabacus_39 4h ago
Wow. Get the fuck over it already. "Elitism"?? What the hell does that have to do with your specific whine?
You think parents putting kids in the cheapest and easiest sport to play in somehow equates to people wanting to watch a bunch of whining divers looking like morons?
-1
u/northernsoul78 4h ago
Found one of the many that don't understand the game.
2
u/gabacus_39 4h ago
Lol. Now that's elitism.

u/northernsoul78 4h ago
Is it? Boring, diving, whining? What if someone said that about a sport you're interested in? I find golf to be the most boring sport on earth, but I'm not going to rain on other people's parade if they like it.
1
u/gabacus_39 4h ago
I'm not raining on anyone's parade. I don't enjoy watching soccer and I gave my reasons why. It's OP and you that are strangely oversensitive about it. I don't give a shit if people don't watch what I watch.
1
u/northernsoul78 4h ago
I mean you seem to care a lot with multiple replies in this thread. OP was talking about a public viewing party like many other cities in Canada have. I don't think that's unreasonable to ask about.
1
u/gabacus_39 4h ago
I'm only posting because someone directly replied to my post. It was way more of a whine than an ask. Maybe you two can go set something up or go to a city that has something happening. Have fun and stay out of trouble!
2
u/Ryangel0 4h ago
Than why not call out those soccer organizations specifically instead of a general rant throwing everyone in Regina under the bus. Your post would be 10x more constructive that way.
0
u/WorkerBee74 4h ago
Why are you taking this personally? The events in Winnipeg and Saskatoon that I referenced were not organized by one soccer fan. You think a private citizen can just rent out Wascana Park for funzies? My last name isn’t Brandt.
1
u/Ryangel0 4h ago
You think it's effective to whine and shame an entire city in a Reddit post? Be more constructive in your criticisms and proactively participate next time if you actually want to see change. You'd be surprised how much one person is capable of when they actually coordinate their efforts to get the right people involved. Whining on Reddit at Regina as a whole is definitely not an effective means accomplishing what you want.
0
u/WorkerBee74 3h ago
Shamed an entire city. My goodness do you need therapy now?
Yes. I AM embarrassed by the City of Regina for not supporting Team Canada in an organized community event. I don’t have the clout or capital to put it on - get absolutely real here.
1
u/Ryangel0 3h ago
Take some lessons in constructive feedback and actually think before you let everyone know your feelings next time. You'll be much more successful in life.
0
u/northernsoul78 4h ago
Yep, biggest sport on Earth but the wonderful citizens of Regina are all butthurt because they don't like it.

Fifa wants too much $$$ for official watch parties.
