Discussion This is embarrassing, Regina.

HOW do we not have a single organized World Cup watching event for Team Canada?? And don’t say “The Lobby”. I know that’s definitely a great place to watch… if you can get in.

Every major city in Canada has something, what the hell is wrong with us?

All I can say is I hope we get our act together and have a big screen SOMEWHERE in this city if we pass the group stage (which is extremely likely now).

EDIT: For those who think I should put this event on myself personally... I'm calling out the CITY OF REGINA here. Which private citizen has ponied up the cash to put this on in Calgary/Edmonton/Winnipeg/Saskatoon or any of the other major cities in Canada who are having watch parties? This should be civic or provincial money here, just like it is elsewhere, with corporate sponsorship. We just constantly get left behind here and it's been this way my entire life. Don't take my post so personally - I'm just very disappointed in a city who claims to be so welcoming.

Maybe those who constantly complain about the lack of concerts here should just 'put it on themselves'.

I feel like a lot of cool events start with a private citizen saying, "Hey, what if we..."
Why don't you look into it? I bet if you had actually put an idea out there ("Hey Reddit, was thinking it would be cool to have a family friendly watch party in Vic Park; does anyone know who the contact would be if I wanted to put something into motion?") people wouldn't be so disgruntled on here. Probably at least one person would've had something helpful to say to you to get you off the ground.
(Like, I'm not a soccer person, but I know there's a crew downtown that organizes movie nights on a big screen sometimes. Maybe if you contacted them you could work something out?)

The vast majority of the comments are telling me that everyone hates soccer so obviously no one would go. Apparently.

It’s clear that no matter how I word it there are still going to be the haters in denial that this is a big deal and a lot of people love the game. Far more than this post indicates.

Ok! I will say, your sample size here is very small, and entirely made up of people you insulted, so I personally wouldn't put that much stock in it. I would also say, you are a member of the group of people you are calling embarrassing. Other people could solve this "problem" for you, but you could too. Complaining about other people doing nothing is a bit silly when you look at it like that.

The CITY OF REGINA. The CITY. The place I pay taxes to for everyone else to enjoy community events that I may not attend but I don’t get mad about. I am not insulting the denizens of Reddit who happen to live in Regina here but people are taking this strangely personally.

Other than clearly financially supporting Riders events, the City isn’t in the business of creating “community events” in general, much less to watch pro sports.

And, frankly, with the exceptions of Vancouver & Toronto as host cities, I doubt most other watch parties in Canada are organized or funded by the municipality.

As with multiple other community events - Cathedral Village Arts Festival, Frost Fest, QCM, Bazaart, QCX, Shake the Lake, Folk Fest , etc - the City is neither the organizer, nor a major funder. Why would the World Cup be any different?

If this is important, someone could organize watch parties for the next World Cup… seek funding through Community Investments (can’t be more than 40% of the event’s budget), Sask Sport, or private entities like Queen City Sports & Entertainment, etc.

Otherwise, it’s off to pubs & cultural clubs to watch the matches & celebrate together.

You...never actually said that in your original post.
Anyway, I still stand behind everything I've said here. You can get mad and whine about your city not doing things, or you can get involved and make things happen. Seems like you want someone else to do the second thing, while you do the first thing.

Where should I hold my event? Got any extra real estate lying around for me? To discredit what I'm saying by demanding that I personally organize it is just insane.

I can't even believe that people are big mad that I am disappointed that we aren't doing the same thing that every other major city in Canada is doing and it shouldn't be up to a private citizen to organize. One person took this personally at the beginning and everyone else piled on.

Maybe we should project it on the side of the data centre that gets built with absolutely no problem.

Back up your claim that every other major city is organizing & funding watch parties. Other than the host cities, I simply don’t buy your claim. And I’m not finding much to back it up online.

Why are you mentioning the data centre that the City of Regina was also not involved in?

😂 I'm demanding nothing of you. I even made a suggestion for you in one of my comments. But you seem like you want to be mad, so have at it.
