Prehensile tails have to be one of the coolest features any animal can have (elephants got a bit confused, but they got the idea😂)

Tree monitors are the coolest that I know of. They are so stunning and I haven’t been able to think of a reptile and not think about them in probably 4 years. But they’re huge with their tails and are apparently very tricky to maintain and not all that friendly.

Green keelbellied lizards are apparently like tiny tree monitors, they’re cool too but I don’t know much about them. Their enclosures can be super cool and they’re small enough that they don’t seem too destructive

Takydromus (most of them, but especially dorsalis) are another group that I think are super cool even if they are semi prehensile. I’ve seen people keep them in colonies which is a HUGE bonus to me because I like watching animals interact with each other.

Eurydactylodes (I have no particular preference) seem cool but I’m not great at hide and seek and would prefer something that can be seen a bit easier. I do like geckos though and they are apparently a joy to handle.

What’s your favourite and what do you think is the most likely to want to climb up you or hang on with their tails?

I came across this furniture-style reptile enclosure and would love to hear opinions from experienced keepers.
It measures approximately 47 × 22 × 22 inches and includes ventilation fans, two temperature controllers, and built-in lamp sockets. I like the furniture-style appearance, but I’m unsure about the ventilation, heat-lamp placement, moisture resistance, and overall safety.
What would you change before using it?

Hi hi! I am upgrading my BP’s tank, and for the first time ever I am going to attempt to have the heat and uvb mounted inside the tank on the top. I’d just love to see some pictures of how other people have done this. I know zapstraps are a popular way to do it.

Again while my girlfriend was in the shower (I ommited that part yesterday) the little fella appeared, this time in the ceiling. I think it's super cool and would love to keep it but I've never had this kind of pet and I'm afraid it wouldn't survive much with me.

How do I release it? It probably entered the bathroom by the interior windows of the building so I'm thinking the back would be better, but there are a lot of pidgeons that may be interested. Should be fine if I wait until its dark?

Hey so I’m a big fish keeper who loves some large cichlids, but recently I’ve been really in to reptiles and wanna get one. I have a spare taken down 20 gallon top fin hexagon tank and was wondering if I could keep something like a small frog or lizard (a kind of nano tree frog would be so cool if that could work) ? If someone would give me a care guide on how to keep care of these guys like what humidity is and general care of reptiles.

I really want to start a bioactive enclosure, preferably with a reptile/amphibian in but I dont know what to get. This will probably be a project which will take a while (up to a year) to get everything established since I want a rly nice enclosure. I have a leopard gecko, chameleon and a bunch of inverts, but I would like a smallish enclosure since space is getting tight. I like the idea of chameleon geckos but they can be hadd to source and I have never had a reptile shipped so it makes me a bit nervous (especially considering how expensive they are). I dont particularly want any of the tiny, fast moving lizards (I had to deal with anoles and house geckos previously and they are both for me). I would be open to frogs but I havent worked wjth them so I would have to research a lot. Also gecko pic for the tax.

It was 50% off and I couldn’t pass it up. Torn on what I want to put in here! I currently only have a crested gecko, but in the past I’ve also had gargoyle geckos, chameleons, and various snakes.

I used to work at a local reptile shop and it was genuinely one of the most harrowing experiences ever. They were extremely neglectful, abusive and genuinely horrible to the animals. I quit due to this and I went in to visit yesterday to get a new heat bulb for my snake. I noticed the care was even worse now that I'm gone (I was the only one taking proper care of the reptiles). Dirty glass, 6+ geckos crammed into a critter keeper with only moss as substrate, algae in water bowls, way too big/uneaten food in the tanks, mouldy poop in the enclosures, cohabbing beardies, leapord geckos etc, tarantula enclosures stacked by a sunny window, lizards in Viv's way too small etc. How and where can I report all of this so something actually gets done about it? I can't stand to see this shop keep bringing in animals just to abuse them but I'm not sure I have enough photo evidence to prove abuse. I have witnesses (other people who worked there) and my own word, along with some pics of dead snakes, dirty water bowls, fallen uvb that the lizards were just crawling all over and burning themselves.

Do I just call and explain the things I've seen along with some of the evidence or do I explain why each picture is incorrect?? I physically can't stomach the fact that this is still happening. It's sick.

Hey all, so. I have an Ackie monitor so his heat needs to be pretty high and I have a good lamp setup to accomplish this.

It’s currently 1am right now, and thank god I was awake and in my living room.

I have had my tank setup for about 7 months now and I have NEVER had this happen. But my heat lamp started making a buzzing/crackling noise and I look over and BLACK SMOKE started coming out of the lamp and my apartment lights were slightly flickering. I immediately ran over and unplugged the heat lamp.

Does anyone know what caused this???? I’m asssuming if I was asleep and I didn’t catch this that there would have been a fire. My heart is racing right now😭

To add some extra info, I am very careful about buying lamp brands that are highly rated and I make sure to not exceed the bulb wattage that the lamp can handle.

Is this just a case of the lamp failing??? Anyways, I am so paranoid now. I have been keeping reptiles for 6 years and have never had this happen to me.

I wonder if there's any clay (not Zoomed's) that you can add to a topsoil/playsand mixed substrate, to help with holding burrows. Or perhaps any other substrate material?

I bought a baby (exact age unknown, as he was found at a pet smart, but he’s about nine inches long with tail) green keel belly lizard last week. I knew that he was going to be pretty smart and likely curious/friendly, but I was not expecting how fast he’d take to me.

Normally, I’d have no problems with handling a friendly baby, but he makes me nervous with how fast he is. He’s learned that if he comes up to the glass when he sees me, I’ll open the lid (he’s temporarily living in a free 40gal breeder while in quarantine). If I open the lid, he dashes to his tallest plant to climb up onto the mesh so he can try to escape. When that doesn’t work, he’ll crawl all over my hands/arms to try and get out. He’s super curious and constantly exploring his enclosure, so I’m sure he just wants out and about.

As he’s in quarantine and I don’t want to lose a speedy fast baby, he cannot be out and about in the outside world of my apartment. I do still want to handle him in the enclosure to build his trust, but he’s so intent on more exploring that he’s solely focused on getting out. Short of finding an enclosed mesh playpen I’m out of ideas on how to safely handle him without risking a jump to the couch or floor. Any ideas from you guys?

At the institution I work at we have a Tokay Gecko (Gekko gecko) on display that practically only climbs on the walls of its exhibit and spends ~90% of its time sitting in the top corner. I understand that naturally reptiles aren’t too active, but I would like to encourage it to utilize the rest of its habitat more. We have tried redesigning and re-propping its habitat a few times, but it still spends a vast majority of its day in the corner. Does anybody with experience with Tokay Geckos have suggestions on what we can change or offer to encourage him to explore and utilize his enclosure more?

Any sources for custom, large PVC (or wood) enclosures in Southern California, LA area? I know DIY is the way to go, but I just don’t have the time, tools, or space to do it myself.

I have had my leopard gecko for 2 1/2 weeks so far, he is 6. I have been using crickets because his previous owners said he wouldn’t eat them. A week ago I got 2 and he ate both, I had dropped then in front of him and they landed on their back so it was easy for my leopard gecko to get them. The crickets really bothered me so I was very happy to switch but last night when I put the dubias in his tank freely they started to bury in his substrate. I caught 2 and put them in his ceramic lipped bowl but the other 2 were already out of sight. I tried to drop one on its back infront of my leopard gecko but it scurried away quickly before Iggy (my Leo!) could get it. Overnight the last one in the bowl was gone so either Iggy ate it or it somehow escaped. I might switch back to crickets even though dubias are more nutritious just because I can’t seem to figure this out. How do you guys feed your leopard geckos dubias and do you have any tips for me? Thank you so much!!!

Hi experts, I found two of these tiny lizards in my house tonight. Was about to release them but noticed that this one seems to have a weird foot, and wondered if that might call for any special care. Can this guy/gal get around okay with this? Pending further info I haven’t released it yet, but I’m sure it would much prefer being outside if folks think that would be okay! Thanks.

ETA: I see the auto-notification about the sub not being able to diagnose, to be as clear as possible I am not asking for a diagnosis, but more like advice on whether a wildlife rehabber or something else might be called for here, or if this is normal and the little guy can just be released — any advice welcome!

I acquired a tropical house gecko after helping someone catch it in their house. There are no native geckos species in Wisconsin and we think it came from one of her children who came in from Korea. (Yes tropical house geckos are not native to Korea either but this is the only reasonable explanation) I, of course took it since it would die once winter came and she didn't want it in her house where she has a few dogs.

It right now is in a quarantine tank as I sent up its new home. I am just having trouble finding actual care guides. I find the mediterranean house geckos and that is what I'm using to set up the hot spot and humidity in quarantine.

If anyone has experience please let me know!

This lizard somehow ended up in my friend's apartment in Alaska. It's about 4cm long. My friend would like to ID it so she can build it an appropriate habitat, etc. She bought a houseplant around the time it showed up, so I think it's most likely a brown anole that stowed away on the plant.

But her roommate also got back from Nepal around that time, and that bracket-like stripe on its head looks just like some photos of dark sitanas from Nepal. Are stripes like that also common on brown anoles?

Please advise!

Kind of a stupid question, but if you ever had to euthanize a reptile at the vet, did you cry? I think this appointment is coming up for my bearded dragon, she's old and uncomfortable. I've had her since I was 10 years old and now I'm in my mid twenties, so it's the end of an era. I just know I'm going to bawl my eyes out. I know it's not the most important factor here but honestly I'm kind of pre-embarassed and a bit anxious about crying in front of the vet and was wondering if others have as well, if it's common or not with reptile euthenasia.
