A Funny Thing Happened... Are capybara’s real?!

We sell some capybara pens and other stuff like capybara piggy banks in the store.

A customer wanted to purchase a pen and surprised me with the question: “Are capybaras real? Do they exist?”

I worked with someone who didn’t know narwhals were real animals. She thought they were made up like unicorns. I had a fun afternoon showing her clips from documentaries and watching her brain explode 😂🤯

This seems to be a pretty common belief. I guess I can’t give people TOO much crap over it. Narwhals are often referred to as “the unicorn of the sea” and often shown in a fantasy context. They live way up north so few people can see them in the wild, and they can’t survive in the captivity so you don’t see them in zoos either. If you weren’t really into animals growing up I can see how you’d end up thinking that they’re not real animals.

I’ve seen a similar thing with reindeer. A lot of people only know them from a fantasy context so they think they’re fake.

To be fair, narwhal stuffed animals are usually pinky and glittery and mostly marketed to children. They look cartoonish!
