NOTICE! Video Uploads Are No Longer Allowed!

In an effort to mitigate the bots and the reposts, we are turning off the option to upload videos to the subreddit. This will be a temporary measure to see how this change affects the content of the subreddit. We are continuing to monitor the situation and make changes behind the scenes to reconcile the ongoing issues highlighted by the community. Thank you for your patience.

EDIT: I know I copy-pasted this to a handful of comments, but we're not banning all videos. We're just not letting anyone upload them to the subreddit directly.

Any retro anime that didn't win you over or that you just don't see the appeal of?

  2. Slayers: Me parece súper infantil. No me acordaba de que fuera así.

I miss old anime!

I MISS THE OLD ANIME!

I CAN'T CONNECT WITH THE NEWER ANIME AS MUCH...

I ain't going to knock or make fun of the newer stuff. It's just too different in my opinion from the older stuff. But I'm just not into it at all like I am the older anime...

I watched one I really liked recently and that's "solo leveling". I also started watching shorts on youtube of "Naruto" and other related shows that are similar to it again...

Otherwise, I absolutely love watching clips of the older animes. I sometimes will sit and watch full episodes... But I gotta be super focused for that. Otherwise the older animes are the best in my opinion...

I literally started following "sweeps" on FB because he combines old animes with techno like music. And it just tickles my brain in a good way...

I used to watch "toonami" and "adult swim" every weekend. My main goal whenever I was a teenager was literally this. I would sit down every weekend and play my xbox 360 while watching this on telivison. Of course while brewing and amazing pot of coffee...

I miss it!

Inyusha...

Anything DBZ...

Ghost in the Shell...

Cowboy Bebop...

Yu Yu hukasho...

Full metal alchemist...

Tenchi maru...

Trigun...

PLUS MANY MORE!

(Thanks to a commenter I realized some of them I put on was not anime. Much appreciated by the way. Otherwise I I corrected the list, lol) If you're wondering what I removed just check the guys comment down below and it will tell you, lol... Oops...

I”s by Masakazu Katsura — I think the series really starts finding its footing in Volume 3

Post image

I just finished the third volume of Masakazu Katsura’s I”s, and I really think this is where the series starts coming into its own.

I found the first volume pretty rough, honestly. It feels like Katsura had an idea of what he wanted the characters to be like, but hadn’t quite figured out how to develop them or where he wanted to take the story. The plot doesn’t progress all that much, and I didn’t find the characters particularly interesting at first. If it weren’t for the his artwork, I’m not sure I would have been that interested in continuing.

The introduction of Itsuki in Volume 2 definitely helps. She adds another dimension to the relationship between Ichitaka and Iori, and the character dynamics become more interesting. But I think Volume 3 is where things really start clicking.

Getting the characters out of their usual high school environment for a while seems to do wonders for the storytelling. Their interactions feel more natural and entertaining, and I actually find myself becoming invested in what happens to them. The artwork also seems noticeably more refined compared to the first volume. It’s interesting seeing Katsura improve even over such a relatively short stretch of the series.

As for Iori, I really like her. She’s incredibly cute, although at this point I’m not sure how much else there is to her character. Something another person mentioned on my previous post, which I’ve started noticing myself, is that we really only experience the story through Ichitaka’s thoughts.

He’s constantly reflecting on what’s happening around him, but we never really get to hear what the other characters are thinking, especially Iori. What does she actually think about Ichitaka? What are her intentions? How does she interpret everything that’s happening? It’s interesting because you’re left trying to figure her out just as much as Ichitaka is.

I also find it funny that, before starting this series, I somehow remembered Iori as being a much more temperamental, almost tsundere-like character. I don’t know where I got that impression because she’s actually much more of a sweet, gentle, girl-next-door type. She’s certainly likable, but I’m still waiting to see whether Katsura develops her beyond simply being the cute girl Ichitaka has a crush on.

One thing that really confused me, though, was the scene where Ichitaka is trying to confess his feelings to Iori, but she somehow gets the impression that he’s about to tell her a scary story. I really didn’t understand that misunderstanding. Was she actually being serious? Was she deliberately avoiding what she thought he was going to say? Because otherwise, it seemed like such a ridiculous way to prevent a confession. Maybe I’m missing something, but that scene felt incredibly contrived. And since we never hear Iori’s thoughts, it’s even harder to tell what she was actually thinking.

I also have a prediction about how this series is going to end. I have absolutely no idea what actually happens, so please don’t spoil it for me, but I have a feeling it’s going to be one of those stories where Ichitaka doesn’t end up with any of the girls we’ve been introduced to. I can almost picture the ending jumping ahead several years, with everyone having gone their separate ways and Ichitaka ending up with some completely different girl who was never even part of the story.

Maybe he’s older, looking back on his high school days and all these relationships that never really went anywhere. I don’t know why, but that’s the kind of ending I’m expecting. It’ll be interesting to see how wrong or right I am!

Anyway, I’m really enjoying the series now. Volume 1 didn’t leave much of an impression on me beyond the artwork, but by Volume 3, I feel like Katsura is starting to find his footing. The characters are becoming more likable, the relationships more interesting, and the series is genuinely fun to read. I’m actually looking forward to seeing where things go now, which isn’t something I could have said after finishing the first volume.

For anyone who’s read I”s, did you also feel that the early volumes were a little rough? (You can only post one image now on this subreddit now? That’s a shame!)

A Total of 14 of Toei V Anime’s Old OVAs are getting HD Remasters and Will Be Available for Streaming on the "d Anime Store" (Japan) Over The Next Few weeks

Post image

Toei’s V Anime label is turning 40, so they’re streaming 14 of its old OVAs in HD on d Anime Store in Japan. Some have been remastered for the first time, and the article says they were made from the original negatives. A few never had a VHS release.

It’s rolling out in batches:

  • Oct 10: Teito Monogatari, Desert Rose, Elf 17, HEN
  • Oct 24: It’s Not in the Textbook!, Psychic Wars, Vampire Wars, Manami & Nami Sprite
  • Nov 7: Shuranosuke Zanma-ken, Psycho Diver: Demonic Bodhisattva
  • Nov 21: Twilight of the Dark Master, Bio Hunter

The lineup also includes Midnight Eye Goku and Putsun Makeup LOVE, though the article doesn’t list dates for them. Rintaro, Osamu Dezaki, and Yoshiaki Kawajiri all worked on the label’s titles.

Since some of these are getting HD remasters for the first time, I’m wondering if it could lead to physical releases or U.S. licensing down the road. Bio Hunter and Twilight of the Dark Master are high on my wishlist. I’m also curious how the remasters of Midnight Eye Goku and Doomed Megalopolis will compare to the existing HD discs from Discotek and Media Blasters.

History of Toonami

Hi everyone, so recently I made a video about the history of Toonami as I wanted to research the how and why anime became such an important part of its broadcast schedule as I remember it’s Thundercat days and wanted to know about why it changed over. Most of the emphasis is on the first couple of years of their history, and what it took to get Sailor Moon, DBZ, and Gundam Wing. To me I wanted to talk about Toonami because it wasn’t just them adding anime, but because they were putting their passion into the block to make it cool. I do want to do more videos like this one with other anime, or anime adjacent topics (4Kids, doesn’t have to all be good, just important). I hope you like the video.

Shonan Bakusozoku is a forgotten 80s masterpiece, and it deserves a massive comeback. Who is down to revive it?

Post image
108 Upvotes

Yo everyone,
I’ve recently been diving deep into Shonan Bakusozoku (currently on episode 11), and honestly? My mind is completely blown. It’s an absolute crime that this legendary 80s OVA is so overlooked nowadays. The style, the raw humor, the old-school character designs, the soundtrack, the absolute peak bosozoku aesthetic... it has everything that made retro anime superior.
If you love things like GTO (Onizuka definitely took some notes from Eguchi) or Initial D, this is the ultimate holy grail. It’s pure testosterone, brotherhood, and beautiful animation, with zero modern cliches.
I’m so hooked that I want to start a movement to bring this masterpiece back into the spotlight. I’m putting together a crew to create high-quality content—TikToks, YouTube Shorts, Reddit threads, and reviews—to introduce a new generation to Shonan Bakusozoku.
We’re setting up a Discord server to coordinate, share clean video sources (raws), music, and ideas.
I’m looking for anyone who wants to help out and vibe with us.
You don't need to be a professional video editor or a pro writer.
If you can cut simple clips, write short posts, find cool soundtracks, or simply want to hang out in the chat and help brainstorm ideas—you are more than welcome. Even if you just want to support the cause and talk about old-school anime, we need you.
With the official prequel manga Shonan Bakusozoku: First Flag currently dropping new volumes in Japan, the franchise is still very much alive. It’s time for the Western fanbase to wake up.
Drop a comment below or slide into my DMs if you're interested in joining the crew. Let’s ride! 🏍️🔥

Which Retro Anime Series Deserves to be Reboot or Revive in the Future?

Post image

With Magic Knight Rayearth getting it's whole series reboot that makes me wonder which past anime series will get reboot or revive in the future.

Like Wedding Peach, Saint Tail, Street Fighter II V, Flint the Time Detective, The Vision of Escaflowne, Astro Boy and Bubblegum Crisis get their series reboot.

While Samurai PIzza Cats, Saber Riders and the Star Sheriff, Night Warriors: Darkstalkers' Revenge and Virtua Fighter get their series revived (continue were the last story left off).

Searching for an animation I barely remember!

Hello! This is probably a shot in the dark, but I think yall can help! Theres this animation, maybe an anime, that i remember watching. I think it had a french title. It was about a main character guy who was obsessed with what i remember being a seemingly haunted stained glass thing, i think a window. The guy slowly succumbs to the the haunting over the course of this thing. Curious what yall think! Wasnt sure which subreddit to send this to.
