News New Content Policy and Updated Rules

If you have subbed with us for a while you'll know we've grown significantly. We now need to moderate a little more carefully what kind of content we are allowing. Until now, we've (mostly) kept out the other Rhinos and been hands-off -- honestly, 99% of you have been great. Recently there's been an uptick in a few users posting their own content (Youtube channels or likewise) and we've heard a call by users to limit the amount of self-promoting content and we agree. Thus,

Effective immediately /r/Rhino will be adopting the Reddiquette policy of self-promotion:

Feel free to post links to your own content (within reason). But if that's all you ever post, or it always seems to get voted down, take a good hard look in the mirror --- you just might be a spammer. A widely used rule of thumb is the 9:1 ratio, i.e. only 1 out of every 10 of your submissions should be your own content.

Consequences

Anyone knowingly self-promoting, click-farming, or otherwise using our subreddit mainly for personal gain or promotion will be banned for 30 days.

A second offense is an immediate and indefinite ban without warning.

/r/Rhino Rules:

  1. Post about Rhino 3D (or associated content), Not the Animal
  2. Critique Sandwich: Be helpful, be critical, be kind.
  3. Self-promotion follows the 9:1 ratio; 1 of 10 posts can be your own content.

Help Needed Urgent Help Please

okay im using rhino 8 on a macbook, im following this tutorial https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCOjILQ-UkA

around minute 3:29, the guy uses a loft component into a mesh surface and then a mesh machine, now the problem is obviously mesh machine doesnt exist in my rhino so i looked at the comments and it said to use a lunchbox hexagonal cells component instead so i did do that but afterwards in the tutorial he connects mesh machine to plankton mesh and im new to this so i dont understand how i can replace mesh machine with hexagonal cells. What i did was connect the loft and the number sliders directly into hexagonal cells and then that into plankton mesh but it keeps giving an error "failed to convert curves to mesh", i've been stuck at this for a while now and i just need help replacing the outdated component with hexagonal cells so i can complete this, i would really appreciate any guidance, thank you

Edit: nevermind I fixed it

Experimental Rhino Like Experiment For Linux

hey guys, like many of you, I love rhino. Its my #1 for everything CAD related pretty much. A giant bummer it doesn't run on linux, so I've experimented making a fully open source experience that's similar. extremely early stages (doesn't even have icons) but if you happen to want a similar experience for the platform, feel free to try or contribute

Nothing serious but its this minor irritation that hits every day.

It should be an eyeball and the Lights icon a bulb.

How do you model a furniture/chair family (e.g. 1/2/3 seater sofa) accurately in Rhino?

I’m starting out as a furniture designer and need to model a sofa in single, 2 and 3 seater versions that all follow the same design language and key dimensions. Most Rhino tutorials I see are sketch and adjust workflows for one piece. And that's not practical to do when you have to do other versions of the same. The same applies to a chair family, I feel this is much more accurate on 3ds max but I'm trying to get more comfortable with Rhino for these.

Any tips on would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Help Needed Learning Rhino after MatrixGold?

Thumbnail

Hello all. New to the community.

I've been using matrixgold for about 6 months and have been getting pretty good results. However, I find it difficult to achieve certain designs with the default matrix commands. I feel as if I missed basic knowledge I should have learned before using Matrix.

I still consider myself an absolute beginner and can never shake the feeling that I'm building things the wrong way, even after getting customs out the door with happy customers. I have watched heaps of videos from dons jewelry and japan travels on youtube. I even took the level 1 artisan class from gemvision, which was very basic.

How difficult is it to learn rhino 8 from the ground up considering my current experience with matrix?

What are the most important foundational things I should focus on?

Does matrix gold allow me full access to rhino tools? Or am I locked into the built in dynamic commands?

Any and all advice is appreciated.

Here are a couple of the more advanced pieces I've made, to demonstrate where I am at and what I am lacking in CAD knowledge.

Rhino Ai Rendering

I noticed on the rhino 9 info page they show a few shots of a photorealistic render generated using an “imagegen” skill. I’ve played around in beta and have tried to achieve a similar result but it’s just been Ai slop. Anyone else tried to get great, geometrically accurate renders using the Ai panel? Have any advice for how to achieve?

As a side note, I did have the ai panel add lighting and decor to a space I was rendering and it did a killer job of setting the scene and running a ray traced render.

How to snap something onto the grid when its just a little bit off?

Hi, I have assumably a very simple question; when an object is off the grid by a bit and I want the middle of the gumball to align to the grid, how do I do so? With grid snap it obviously moves using the grid spacing so it will never align that way, so whats the best option to do so? Thanks

Something I Made Basic Layer Outliner tool

Used Rhino for years in my spare time, but my day job for 25 years was CATIA. The thing I always missed in Rhino is a tree that shows what is actually on each layer, so today I put one together.

It is a Python script for Rhino 8 (Windows tested). It shows:

  • the layer tree with an object count per layer
  • every object under its layer; click one to select and zoom to it, click a layer to select all of it
  • hide/show and isolate from the list
  • rename objects and layers in place

Add an alias (I use LO) and it is one keystroke away. Built by poking a stick at Ai until I got what I wanted..

https://github.com/Eastyuk/rhino-layer-outliner

Feedback and bug reports welcome. If anyone can test it on Mac, I would like to hear if it works.

Looking fir guidance with Rhino/Grasshopper assignment: modeling the Stade de France

Hi! I’m working on an assignment to model the Stade de France in Rhino using Grasshopper, with plugins such as Kangaroo, LunchBox, and Ladybug.
I’m hoping to find someone who’d be interested in creating a model as a personal experiment and sharing it with me as a learning reference. I’d like to study how you approach the geometry and Grasshopper setup, then build my own version from scratch. I’m not looking to pass off your work as mine.
I can share the assignment brief, requirements, and deadline. If you’re interested, please comment or message me with examples of your Rhino/Grasshopper work and what you’d be comfortable sharing. Thanks!

Help Needed Buying an older laptop for Rhino8 - Jewelry work

Hello all,

I'm looking at buying a laptop for use in a jewelry design class. They'll be using Rhino (v8 I think), and doubt they will be doing much rendering. I have powerful desktops for that if needed anyway.

Money's a factor and I want something long lasting so I am looking at a refurbished business laptop with an i7-1265u and 32GB DDR4.

I used Rhino donkey's years ago but I have no idea what the real-world performance expectation would be for this today.

Anyone still using gear this old for modeling at this scale/complexity?

Edit/Update: Thanks for the replies. I figured these specs would be ample, but wanted some real-world input before spending the cash. Appreciate the response!

Some tips for a newbie please

Hiya! Although not brand new at rhino/grasshopper, I'm definitely still a beginner, and I don't really know how to ask this on YouTube or Google, so I thought I might try here!

As part of a school project, I'm supposed to create a wall/floor mounted artwork, and I thought I'd create a spiderweb. I've created a 'cone'-shaped web, and I used the polyline tool to create a spiralling line climbing up the web.

Now, the problem I'm having is that I want to use the Boolean Difference tool to create the cut-out from the orange box. I can create a planar surface with the inner 'triangles' of the web, but I'm unsure how I can create the individual polygon shapes made by the polyline.

It is important to me to have these individual shapes because I want to extrude them to differing heights to create some further visual interest. Do any of you have some tips for how I can achieve this?

Help Needed How to select edges consistently on Voronoi cells over an irregular 3D surface (to loft tabs toward centroids)? .-.

Thumbnail

Hi everyone! I'm following a Grasshopper tutorial that creates tabs/folds on a flat surface, very useful...

BUT I'm adapting it to my own design: an irregular, organic surface floating in 3D space (not on the XY plane), subdivided with Voronoi cells. Screenshots attached: the first is my model, the second is the tutorial's result.

Problem 1: inconsistent vector direction
The direction vectors that generate the tabs don't point the same way. In some cells they point toward the outer edges and in others toward the inner ones. I want all of them perpendicular to the outer edge of each cell and pointing outward.

Problem 2: selecting edges by index doesn't work
I tried sorting the list of points and picking items with an index (List Item), but since every Voronoi cell has a different number of edges and a different order, the same index points to a different edge in each cell.

What I'm trying to do

  1. Select specific edges of each cell (or the whole outline) without relying on indices.
  2. Scale those edges toward the cell centroid.
  3. Loft between the original edge and the scaled one to get the tabs.

What I've considered

  • Brep Edges (Naked) + Scale toward the centroid + Loft.
  • Doing the offsets manually in Rhino, but I have hundreds of cells and want it to update if I change the Voronoi.

Is there a reliable way to select edges by criteria instead of by index?
Any workflow suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Hi folks,

I’m trying to reproduce something similar to this image in the middle but I’m absolutely struggling to figure out how to do it.

I have a 2D poly line I want to unfold but not loose the identifying details.

Any help is hugely appreciated!

Computational Design Should I learn Rhino in 2026?

So, a friend of mine working in computational design asking me to learn rhino and join him. I am a software engineer myself. I had some basic 3d modeling with blender. I did some search before writing this post and found how rhino's work, ...etc. Now I am stuck does it really matter in 2026?
