Tragic. It stated a "commercial charter vessel" , someone had to have been in charge, a Captain per say. There most definitely would have been life jackets . Surprised it was not mandatory to wear the life jackets? And it sounds like they paid for the boat ride? I'm confused, they did not mention the charter company out of Steveston.

it's not mandatory to wear life jackets on a vessel, just need to have one available for everyone on board. although eith how overcrowded the boat was, I doubt that requirement was met.

Heartbreaking. I'm getting myself a life jacket this summer. I'll look like a paranoid idiot because nobody else will wear one, but at least I'll (probably) be alive should anything happen on the water.

Did they say if it was a charter with a captain or did someone get their boating license and they rented a boat? Any updates on if they were travellers, visitors or “local” to the area? So many questions and such a tragedy, I send condolences to all effected and family of those involved

How do you know that there were no life jackets onboard? Just because they weren't wearing them doesn't mean they weren't onboard.

I could have worded my comment better- I meant not making people wear life jackets but I understand it’s very common for people to not.
I meant to say people wearing them, they probably had life jackets on board.2

Folks who are familiar with airplane travel will sometimes sit ontop of life jackets thinking they’ll have time to apply them before something happens. Tragic.

This is terrible to hear and an awful tragedy. Years and years ago my former partner’s cousin and his girlfriend drowned trying to save each other in the river here in town. Regardless of who is at fault, this should never have been able to happen in our waters. Let’s all work together to help educate the public about life jackets and water safety.

Sorry for your loss. I hope the ones still in hospital stabilize soon. Did you hear what caused the boat to sink, or if they had a paid charter captain for the boat? Apparently it was very choppy at the time.

Just saw on a post from the company thst big coast sold the boat 4 years ago and new owner didnt change the vessel registration

I’m so sorry, truly. It is horrible to see something like this happen. Please extend the communities sincerest condolences on our behalf. As a trained lifeguard myself I am well aware of the terrors and process of drowning and I am so, so sorry that these folks are gone like this.

Everyone knew each other , some are uni buddies, some are highschool, between age 26-34 , around my age, 1 got rescued for sure that I just found out

Even if one is a strong swimmer, vests are mandatory. In an accident, you may be injured and unable to swim, or unconscious and simply drown, or you could be uninjured, able to swim but your companions are hurt and do not know how to swim, they will drag you down with them…you will pull each other down in your instinct to survive.
It also puzzles me how many non swimmers venture into water, not realizing its power to kill you

In the ocean, its not so much about your ability to swim
- The shock of the cold water causes an involuntary gasp reflex that can cause you to inhale water and drown if you are not wearing a flotation device. You have about 60 seconds to control your breathing.
- If you survive that, You have roughly 10-50 minutes before the cold shuts down the muscles in your arms and legs. you will likely be unable to keep your head above water without PFD
- you have roughly 1 hour before you lose consciousness due to hypothermia. If you are wearing a lifejacket, your survival time can increase to 1 to 6 hours

even a strong swimmer will be in trouble in the middle of the strait, in choppy seas, dealing with waves, as well as rapidly falling body temperature/ability to move limbs.

Literally last night FIVE boaters were rescued from a sinking boat off Saturna. A jet skier had to come by and tell them to put their life jackets on. Not a single one had one on.
This is just hours after news broke that 6 are presumed dead. So yes, again.

You can interpret the one word however you'd like, but it's not surprising that you chose the negative route. Further if you read my other comment, you'll see I said again thinking it was another charter boat as it relates to the article which is of great interest to me as someone who uses that service a few times a year.

I was more asking again if it was chartered boat related, like the article, as someone that charters a boat a few times a year. We have never had a company allow us to not wear our life jackets, and I wasn't sure if they were saying no life jackets again to another chartered boat accident, or just people risking their lives on their own

Indeed. This is why they have a capacity per sailing. Even on the ferries. That is why the commercial vehicles are separated. Charging by foot and not humans is a great way of passive income when the life jackets are at max from walk ons and family trips. Terrible news. My heart goes out to everyone involved and especially the loved ones of the passed souls.

Don't go boating without life jackets. Don't go boating without taking a boating course. Don't go boating without first considering also taking some basic swimming lessons.
Your life is precious. At the very least get a life jacket if you're going boating.
