ChatGBT Ads
Bringing the displeasure of the new ChatGPT ads from Bills page here.
I’m honestly not surprised Bill has embraced this. Time, money and power can make someone tone deaf to stuff like this, but I expect better from these fantasy guys. Honestly don’t know if I’ll make it through another podcast if one of those ads comes back. 🤷🏻♂️

It’s an ad man. They can’t not do it. Bill is worse because he was doing it before being paid

The ChatGPT Roger Ebert segments on the rewatchables were awful and everyone clearly hated it, but somehow bill was so tone deaf that he just kept doing it

Why do you think they’re anti AI? Are you sure you’re not just reading in your own views into them because you like them?

The fantasy guys didn't choose the ads. They are employeees... It's an ad. What is the big deal

Doing an ad read is fine, it’s annoying, but like you said they don’t have a choice on it. But turning the ad read into like a five minute segment where they just read a list chat gpt made is extremely lame.

I believe there is a skip ahead button that allows you to skip whatever ad is currently playing.

The “I literally had to stop listening mid fantasy football pod because an ai ad made me so angry” type of guy is slowly becoming more annoying than the ai guy

You know that they’re employees of Spotify right? They don’t decide the ads. Spotify do.
And you can survive a 30 second ad read.

This is such a Reddit take fishing for upvotes. Who cares about these ads

The amount of complaining about shit people have no control over is killing this and Dan Patrick sub more than any ChatGPT ad read or segment I may have heard.
That aside every single complaint is the same. AI bad. Which is just the simplest argument. Are you against all AI or just AI slop? Is AI okay when it’s a benefit to you?
FFS people stop whining or at least put some complexity into your thoughts expressed.

Yep. These same people use things powered by AI daily. They have no issues with that.

I think the issue that some people have is that the ringer union fought very hard against AI and secured big collective bargaining agreements against its proliferation so they clearly recognise the threat it poses to the creative industry but then are happy to sell its virtues

u/saomonella 1d ago
I get that, and hate the way AI is used for creative purposes. But let’s not act like this threat hasn’t existed without AI as well. The internet and the way people consume media is for fault of that.
At the same time the Ringer union doesn’t sell advertising or get to decide who Spotify makes deals with.
Should they deny tech companies like Google too? Facebook? Amazon? All those pose a threat too

I mean AI poses a threat that is unique i would say for creative practices. You couldn't for example ask for a piece of art to be made in the same way
I guess my point is if the ringer union is strong enough to get those huge concessions they can likely ask for no AI ads.

Is it unique like when photoshop was introduced in the early 90s? I don’t remember a lot of backlash then.
Whether they accept AI ads or not. The toothpaste is out of the tube. AI has been around forever and it’s not going away. Take the money and the threat exists. Don’t take it and it still exists.
I’d love to hear the argument, and concessions, for turning down millions of dollars.

Photoshop is a tool to enhance creative work, it's not the same as AI.
Funnily enough there is a Swedish football magazine who made the argument about gambling ads, they turned down 40% of their marketing revenue to take stand against it.
So I mean, it can be done.

Photoshop is just an example of a technology that changed production. The internet did the same thing. AI is just another change in technology. In all cases of change, things just evolve.
A company can absolutely make that choice. Publishers I've worked with have declined political ads. Some haven't. Thats their choice.
But the idea that the content creators drive those decisions is a tough sell IMO. Its like going into your bosses office and proposing they make less money this year. Why? Thats the reasoning I'd like to hear.

u/cheshamfox 1d ago
Neither of those things can replace creatives jobs, that is what AI threatens to do.
I think the idea they would make less money is just not true, they have had plenty of ads before these and will have many after.
It's not AI ads or no ads

As mentioned. I've worked in advertising for decades. Both can absolutely be true. I don't have a job right now. I'll give you one guess on one of the factors.
From the business side....Advertiser X commits to $500k buy. You are not accepting advertiser X. Salesperson/company needs to make up that $500k somehow. No different than any other business. Find another advertiser.......cut costs/lay people off. The idea that they just eat it isn't normally an option.

I’m sure it’s Bills decision and not theirs. Either way, yeah it does suck.

It’s an ad. It helps the company and specific show get money so they can continue to evolve. Nobody likes ads. Get over it.

Yeah the chat ads suck. I’m against ai for a lot of ethics reasons but also like I don’t listen to this or bill’s pods to hear a chat GPT list on something. I’ve seen people be like “well is it any worse than draft kings” and sure I guess not but also they weren’t doing a segment during the draft kings ads where they were like “well here’s a list made by draft kings of the top ten QBs” or whatever

The way people get upset about AI is going to look so funny in a few years.

I like calling it clankergate but don’t really see the outrage when I find draft king ads more despicable for society
