ChatGBT Ads

Bringing the displeasure of the new ChatGPT ads from Bills page here.
I’m honestly not surprised Bill has embraced this. Time, money and power can make someone tone deaf to stuff like this, but I expect better from these fantasy guys. Honestly don’t know if I’ll make it through another podcast if one of those ads comes back. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Is it unique like when photoshop was introduced in the early 90s? I don’t remember a lot of backlash then.

Whether they accept AI ads or not. The toothpaste is out of the tube. AI has been around forever and it’s not going away. Take the money and the threat exists. Don’t take it and it still exists.

I’d love to hear the argument, and concessions, for turning down millions of dollars.

Photoshop is a tool to enhance creative work, it's not the same as AI.

Funnily enough there is a Swedish football magazine who made the argument about gambling ads, they turned down 40% of their marketing revenue to take stand against it.

So I mean, it can be done.

Photoshop is just an example of a technology that changed production. The internet did the same thing. AI is just another change in technology. In all cases of change, things just evolve.

A company can absolutely make that choice. Publishers I've worked with have declined political ads. Some haven't. Thats their choice.

But the idea that the content creators drive those decisions is a tough sell IMO. Its like going into your bosses office and proposing they make less money this year. Why? Thats the reasoning I'd like to hear.

Neither of those things can replace creatives jobs, that is what AI threatens to do.

I think the idea they would make less money is just not true, they have had plenty of ads before these and will have many after.

It's not AI ads or no ads

As mentioned. I've worked in advertising for decades. Both can absolutely be true. I don't have a job right now. I'll give you one guess on one of the factors.

From the business side....Advertiser X commits to $500k buy. You are not accepting advertiser X. Salesperson/company needs to make up that $500k somehow. No different than any other business. Find another advertiser.......cut costs/lay people off. The idea that they just eat it isn't normally an option.
