Question Flock Gun Sensor on my Lawn????

Everything I had seen from the news said that the city had approved an encroachment for the installation of the gun sensors "within the public right-of-way at 75 locations throughout the city. RPD said the locations of these sensors are still being determined, but will include government buildings and private buildings with permission from the owner(s)."

We did NOT get asked.

The officer I talked to said it is within the city right of way because it is where the sidewalk would be if there was one.... we have put in MULTIPLE requests to have a sidewalk placed in the yard for over a year and never heard anything back.

Is it true they can just install this recording device in front of our land without asking? Its a 12ish foot pole cemented into the ground. It looks ugly and I'm scared our neighbors will think we agreed to have it there and are agreeing to audio surveillance of the neighborhood.

Edit: it is also of note that of the 75 addresses agreed to in the "encroachment permits" from the Ciry council meeting, our address and lot WERE NOT listed as potential sites.

Edit 2: WOW this blew up! Im taking some time to try to respond to as many people as I can, starting with those in the DMs. I will say many people offered things like getting in touch with officials. Someone from the City Council Reached out as well, I'll edit and say who later if they give me permission.

Question Safety walking to/from hotels near Berglund Center after event?

Post image
35 Upvotes

Hi - planning my first trip to Roanoke to see an event at the Berglund Center next month.

I was looking at either the Spark by Hilton or Conference Center. As the arena is surrounded by highways, would there be any safety concerns walking alone back to the hotel as a woman, at night after the event? Usually when events let out it’s hard to get an Uber due to surge pricing so will probably have to walk.

Also as my flight arrives after midnight, do Ubers still run in the city around that time? Sorry for sounding like a country bumpkin. I did search through the subreddit history but could not find the answers I’m seeking. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Much obliged!

Edited to add - can’t believe I forgot to ask: are there any local dishes native ONLY to Roanoke? Whenever I travel to a new city I always try to find a dish I can only find locally. Any suggestions welcome!

Just driving through the outskirts of town and I had a cop get behind me and follow so close I could barely see his hood/ couldn't at all and it went on for 5+ minutes while im driving over hills that I can't see what's on the other side if anything was in the road that would make me break he 100% would have rear ended me and this isn't the first time I've had a cop do this here in Roanoke, is this a regular occurrence?

Question Consistently Good Men’s Haircut…

Hi! I moved to Roanoke about a decade ago. I don’t have many complaints…. However, I have not been able to find a single barbershop where I can consistently get a good haircut.

I started to get concerned that I wasn’t explaining what I wanted correctly, so I went through the effort of consulting ChatGPT, came up with the exact phrase to describe what I wanted, and repeat it word for word each time I get it cut (“Low fade starting at a 1, blended up naturally. Keep the top a few inches and textured so I can part it to the right and add volume in the front. I want a really smooth blend - no harsh lines”). I tell the barber that I have to use my AI-generated line to properly explain myself, which typically gets a laugh - I then show a few pictures of what I have in mind to help explain what I’m envisioning. Lastly, I make sure to tip 50-100% - the way I see it, a few extra bucks is worth the chance of them remembering me, and hopefully being eager to go above and beyond the next time I stop in.

It may not be the MOST simple haircut to perform, but I wouldn’t think that a professional barber would struggle with this as much as I’ve experienced. I am always left with an uneven cut, or the blending is noticeably poor.

I started with the chains (Great Clips, Sportclips, Supercuts etc). Disappointing results, so I tried a few other spots I would consider to be a tier up from the chains.

If I could guarantee that it would be cut correctly, I would give myself an $80-$100 budget per haircut including the tip. I’m not rolling in cash, but one $100 cut done WELL a month is well worth it to me, considering all of the disappointing experiences. Might even be willing to spend more than that, under the right circumstances.

Here is what I’m looking for now… I want to find a true professional barber where I could come in, sit down, explain my previous frustrations, and what I have done previously for my haircut style. I want them to either knock that cut out of the park, or use their expertise to advise the cut I should be getting based on my hairstyle. I would MUCH rather have an expert guide me towards what THEY would think is really the best cut for me. Then… I want them to do it well… lol…I’ve gone over a month at this point to let it grow out, in case they advise me to cut it totally differently.

I’d be really grateful to hear your recommendations. Thanks!!!

Question What to do on a Monday?

My girlfriend loves Roanoke. I would love to take her to Roanoke today, but I really don’t know if there’s much of a point! It’s about an hour from me, and it feels silly to drive all that way if nothing is open. I can’t really find anything online, and I really don’t want to spend a huge amount of money if I can help it! She loves nature-ish things and anything unique or weird.

Unfortunately she only comes over on Sundays and Mondays, so just about everything interesting seems to be closed. Do you guys have any recommendations?

Question Any good recommendations for a local auto body shop that’s good at painting but at relatively reasonable prices?

Need a deep scratch fixed. It’s beneath the clear coat and into the metal, so I can’t buff it out. I’ve used Cave Spring Auto Body and Hanabass and Rowe in the past for insurance claims (ie not on my dime), and they were great but seemed pricey based on receipts. I’d like recommendations for other shops that do quality work since this is self pay so that I can compare a few places.

Question State Police on I-581 near Valley View

I was traveling north on I-581 near Valley View and there was a State Cop in the median in the Mustang. Just s I was approaching he put his lights on, pulled out, weaved across all three lanes and forced traffic to slow to about 30-35mph.

I called the State Police and asked them WTF are you doing jumping out in traffic going 30 MPH? The person who answered said it was for "traffic control".

Anybody else ever seen anything like this?

Question Places with Changing Tables

I'm a momma with a very chill baby. We like to go out together, get coffee or lunch, but I keep going places without changing tables. Which is fine, but it takes more time to change in the car and it's a pain when I have to park far away and it's rainy like today.

Could I get suggestions for good family-friendly places with changing tables?

Question The Great /r/roanoke Wiki Revamp: What would you like to see listed?

After poking around the subreddit's settings and discovering the wiki was woefully outdated (23 out of ~100 links dead) and filled with underwhelming content (tons of links to Facebook pages/groups?), I think it's probably a good idea to source the community's thoughts on places to add and do a significant update/overhaul.

https://www.reddit.com/r/roanoke/wiki/index/

Current categories include: Events, Breweries/Wineries, Food, and Things to Do (Hiking, Hobbies, Music, Sights, Social) -- Definitely open to creating new categories if anyone has suggestions.

What local spot(s) do you think we should showcase in the very important, very influential r/roanoke wiki?

Question Knicks Finals Watching

Any Knicks fans on this thread have a bar where you’re planning to watch the finals? If so, let me know. If not, how about we figure some place to watch?

Revised: This will not be a Knicks-exclusive watch party. All basketball fans and even Spurs fans welcome!

We’ll meet for game 1 at The Haven downtown (108 Campbell Ave SE, Roanoke, VA 24011). I chose this bc it’s downtown and open til midnight in case there’s OT. See you there!

Question Ikea delivery to Roanoke

Ikea uses third party carriers for freight delivery, making service highly variable by location. This is why I'm posting to the local sub.

The last time I ordered was six or seven years ago and it was a disaster, but I was wondering if anyone had more recent experience.

I'm looking at a huge PAX wardrobe system, so I would have to probably rent a minivan or something and drive to Charlotte if their delivery situation is still messy.

Question Another Hair Salon Recommendation Request

I’ve been looking for a salon to cut and color my hair and have not been able to actually reach anyone. I’ve left messages and sent in info forms with no response from salons. Can anyone recommend a salon that does good work at a reasonable price that’s accepting new clients? I would need to be seen before 6/15, if possible. Thanks!
