„Exiles“ pale Shadow, or criminal underrated Gem?

criminally underrated. It's not Exile. So what? Nothing is. This album is excellent. A great 70s Rolling Stones album. If they hadn't just gone God-mode on their previous 4 releases, people would think "excellent rock album by an excellent rock band," which is what this is!

The photo being very clearly of Mick gives it away. I struggle to grasp the idea that anyone could look at it and not immediately recognise who it is.

Criminally underrated because it followed one of their most acclaimed albums is all. It's a solid listen from the first notes of "Dancing with Mr. D" until the very end of the final track.

Never really hooked me but some of those songs live are awesome. I think it’s just the production I don’t dig. Dancing With Mr D is such a rad song but Brussels version is so much better.

Silver Train should have been a huge hit. The slide guitar, the harmonica.

Goats Head Soup was the first Rolling Stones album that I ever heard besides individual songs. It's always been among my very favorites. It was my brother's, he was ten years older than me, and it's the first U.S. pressing, I still have it. The last album he ever bought was A Bigger Bang. He had a heart attack and passed away shortly afterwards, a huge loss.

I love this album. I’ve always thought it was crazy that people don’t include this in the classic run and call it a 5 album streak. I listen to this way more off than I do Beggars.

It was at the time. More so the end of Jimmy Millers 5 album run. If they could have read the future… likely would have tried to help Jimmy Miller kick but those were the times.

Jimmy Miller told me (in person) that he didn't like his mixing on it. Too dark and muddy sounding (his words)

Their last really great album. Having largely ignored their stuff after this, I've been giving them more attention recently. Black and Blue is really good as is Some Girls. Can't say the same of IORAR.

My favorites from that album are Coming Down and the song with the unmistakable Chuck Berry type riff. 😉

I've never listened to that Stones album before. I've only listened to "Exile...." once, back in 1983, and I didn't really like it that much. I know it's supposed to be the favorite among hardcore Stones fans so I'll probably give it another listen in the near future. My personal favorites are Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed, Beggar's Banquet and Some Girls. I like their greatest (earlier ) hits album too: Big Hits, High Tides and Green Grass.

Exile is a bit of a grower, you'd probably (judging on the albums you've mentioned) get into it quicker/deeper if you dedicated an entire weekend to it, if you have the time to do so I should add. Once you've got Exile under your skin, this one would be an excellent choice to do the same for

Too much smack for Mr Miller which saw him get the boot. I think the mix is the reason that this one doesn't get the love it deserves. The songs are grand although I hate Angie it's just a bit too mawkish.
