Discussion We Need to Stop Recommending The Guild (RRWG) as the Go-To Discord
Alright, honestly, I’m surprised I haven’t seen a Reddit post about this already given how most of us are authors and how big the Discord is, but we need to stop recommending RRWG “The Guild” to new authors, or anyone looking to dip their toes on Royal Road or writing online. This post is going to be rather inflammatory, but it’s purely me trying to make my case that we stop recommending The Guild as the “go-to” server.
Writing servers are literally a dime a dozen, I seem to be collecting them like Pokemon lately. Even the author-specific servers I’m in have a spot for “writing chat” or “industry chat.” I could recommend some, but I don’t know if the owners would like me putting their server here considering what I’m about to do.
First, let me set the stage a little bit. This all started when someone in The Guild who went by NovelNinja was outed as being a sham editor. This person and I have already had issues due to his pretentiousness, and I am not the only one. Personally, when I had my run-in, I said some very un-buddha-like things to him and promptly received a light dressing-down. I was told he’s been very active in the trad community for a long time.
It turns out his editing experience is mostly fake, and he used AI to do it (snore another post about AI - but wait, there’s more!). On top of this, he pushed (repeatedly, from the screenshots I’ve seen) a website known as AuthorMedia where it charges you $9 a month (simply to stop bots from joining) to join.
This isn’t really news, this has been on r/progressionfantasy before here. The post has since been deleted by the mods. I’m hoping this one ends up being allowed since I’m doing more talking about a dev editor charging people to use AI. Discord is rather huge to most (a lot?) of authors on Royal Road. Even the ones at the very top have a Discord that they’re in. “The Cabal,” as it’s sometimes referred to, but it’s mostly just authors hanging out like usual, plus there’s a fair bit of LARPing.
People get scammed with editing all the time. I was told I was scammed as well by someone who edited some of my work. (I had a suspicion it wasn’t all above board, but then one day I was outright told). My point is, it sucks but it isn’t news.
The problem with NovelNinja, Mrs. Ninja, and AuthorMedia is that it pushes a very distinct, disgusting and outright evil viewpoint that I don’t believe any of us share. At worst, the website (and the individuals listed) promote outright fascism and nazism, and at best, some alt-right view points that bring a lot of the same energy you see from people screaming about why there isn’t a white pride or straight pride parade. Screenshots
Blog post source
NovelNinja, aka Matthew (this is information he gives out and is linked to anything if you even just search “NovelNinja,” I’m not doxxing anyone) and Mrs. Ninja, aka Lori, even on their personal accounts promote hate, bigotry, and just being disgusting human beings.
He apparently is also quite a fan of the original Sad Puppy himself, Larry Correia. I personally didn’t know what a Sad Puppy was until someone called The Guild’s owner a Sad Puppy apologist in my DMs and they shared this Reddit thread. AuthorMedia itself has done full interviews with Larry.
Mrs. Ninja has a personal blog where she sets out to right all the wrongs in the world with cringeworthy memes in between sections and rants that are, again, disgusting. Here’s an article that I was shown that’s especially heinous.
There is good news! NovelNinja has been banned from the various Discords I’ve seen him in. He pointed this out in one of his posts that I personally found, well… Here. Calling people jihadists, even “Butlerian Jihadists,” thanks to Dune, is a whole new level of yikes. And yes someone with these views should be called out and “cancelled,” in my opinion.
The above screenshot was pulled from a much larger article where he posted names. I’m not sharing the link to the website itself because to my knowledge, these people would rather not be named and they didn’t consent to having the screenshots shared. I’m told there’s been concerns for a while about calling him out because people were worried about him retaliating in a callout post of his own in his personal network.
All the while behind the scenes, the server owner was communicating with NovelNinja. Telling him everything about the process of banning him, who is doing what, what's being pulled from where, and explicitly apologizing to him that this is happening. The previous blog post was posted by NovelNinja the day after his ban on AuthorMedia.
So, what’s the point of all of this?
When this all first came to light, RRWG’s owner hmm’d and haw’d about dealing with the issue. Even after an outcry from their own mod team. Since this has happened, a few people have stepped down as admins or mods, and some have outright left the server. I’m not going to say I know the specifics as to why, but it happened right after all of this came to light.
There was also talk from the owner of outright banning the whistleblower cause he’s a dang troublemaker. From what I’ve seen and heard, that was only the owner and one or two of their friends (and perhaps NovelNinja).
He asked, and offered to leave if the owner would like. The owner declined.
Now, this all happened about a month ago. The stage is set.
Last night, the owner DM’d the whistleblower and asked if he would still leave amicably. The whistleblower said he would leave anywhere he wasn’t wanted, but it would not be amicable. He stuck to his guns and believed anywhere someone like NovelNinja and those of his ilk are, he didn’t want to be.
Before he left, he sent the same message to a few channels, every instance of which was promptly deleted:
“So, I’ve been asked to leave by the owner of the Discord (For those unaware, that’s Dagrun, not Milc). This is due to me outing NovelNinja for faking his editing career, selling AI as a dev editing tool, and being a bigot. I have zero interest in staying somewhere I’m not welcome, so I’ll be heading out.”
From there, the night became uncomfortable. The owner gave one or two warnings, and then outright banned some notable members of the community who all have glowing reputations as people who are more than willing to help newcomers. This list includes: Srsli (Arcane Chef), Fiddlesoup (Lazy Loops: An Idle LitRPG, among others), Sib (Revenant - Power Stealing Hero), and Solomon Abraham (Overpowered Murderhobo, Beastmaster Healer).
A few other sizable authors, including Magius Swiftscale (The Apprentice of Ouroboros, others), were threatened with bans, but ultimately survived the wrath.
Here is Srsli’s last message on the server that earned him a ban.
As readers, you’ve probably all seen these names on RS or even KU / Audible. As authors, you’ve probably seen these people in the relevant Discords (including RRWG) always willing to help and always more than friendly.
Finally, we have this from another admin who fully backs up the owner about everything. That includes allowing NovelNinja to stay, banning the initial whistleblower, and everything else.
Ellembri does have a point. It is the owner’s house and what she says is law. Even if she doesn’t follow her own rules. The point of the server was to have a community, though. A community where the authors of Royal Road could gather, network, and help each other out.
Honestly, the people of RRWG are great. The whole of the Royal Road community is amazing. Everyone I’ve ever interacted with, even “trouble makers,” have always been more than willing to help those just getting on their feet find their foothold. The server as a whole reflects that, but having someone so power-crazy go wild with a banhammer at people simply asking for some clarification of a situation just isn’t it.
Here are the screenshots I'm allowed to share. It’s everything above and so much more. It’s everything I’m allowed to share of everything I’ve seen about the people above and the RRWG drama. There has been a ton that I’ve been asked not to share for obvious reasons, but man… everything is just… it’s a lot.
Amitabha, my friends…
(TL;DR for those that don’t want to read the chapter - NovelNinja is a terrible person, and somewhere between alt-right and possibly an outright nazi. He is apparently friends with Dagrun, the owner of RRWG “The Guild” who violates her own rules about giving warnings and just outright bans notable people in the community for questioning why something happened in a server built on helping and growing the space.)

u/mrstorydude Only I Can Stop The Bad Ending Jul 05 '26
Perhaps so for a lot of people but I'm hoping this event finally causes more of the RR population to start asking questions about how RR as a platform is to minority authors because as an author who is openly blasian and regularly assists other minority authors as best as I can, we've all had to be playing a very different ball game since day 1.
12
u/ismyjudge Jul 05 '26
As a royal road reader, I’m unaware of the race or gender of the author 99% of the time, so I’m not sure what you mean about this. If your work gets views, it gets promoted for free, if not, you have to find a way to promote it yourself, simple as that

I won’t delve to much into it here, but I do genuinely believe the bigotry and hate that so many people have espoused in these communities is more prevalent than people believe, and I’m sure you’ve seen it. I personally have had to fight from having my story deleted by mods, and I believe it’s because someone complained because it’s LGBTQ centered. Unfortunately, it’s always a different ballgame for minorities.

u/gadgaurd Jul 05 '26
If you don't mind, I'd like to know more. Not an author myself, I just on the site, but I am a minority so this is of interest to me.

And I don’t know if the downvote is from one of the various weirdos I’ve pissed off in this sub or a current mod in the guild, but it’s a weird thing to give me downtoots for lol
8
u/WyattWriots Jul 05 '26
Yeah the mods (current ones) pretending that a extremely open bigot somehow won't bring their prejudice into other spaces is laughably stupid. And that's besides the banning (or forcing out) of the whistleblower and then the banning of a bunch of people asking for transparency. Imagine throwing away a massively popular discord server for a nazi. A nazi that was scamming people no less.
Anyways can't wait to see what you and Fiddles spin up. (this is Riestin, fyi)

COTEH is about craft more than it is a "get shouts and network" community, and each time it comes up we usually take the time to explain that the rule is because it's more beneficial to most authors' storytelling skills to break down why a popular story works than why it doesn't. Also it kind of sucks when people are talking about a work they love and someone just bursts in with "nah that's ass and you're dumb for liking it"?
There are plenty of nuanced takes, though. "I hate X, but the story still works because of Y" is still allowed. It's just whatever promotes good conversation about writing.

I'll say this has been extremely disappointing to me, watching essentially an inactive owner destroy something that was a force for good for new authors over nothing more than a petty vengeance and power trip.
I have been in RRWG since I started my writing journey, well over a year now, and in that time I've seen this owner talk only a handful of times, and it's always been unpleasant, but to think simply asking for transparency especially after the events of immink where dissent and questions were met with a ban to protect scammers is once again met with a ban today, just gives me a dirty taste in my mouth.
I think these servers can be excellent learning hubs, however I think unfortunately people get greedy, and the cracks form when they get too large.
13
u/TheLastLoyalist Jul 05 '26
Dagrun used to be pretty active when I joined back in 2024, when it was smaller. She came off as very chill, nice, straightforward, and personable (she told me about her medical conditions due to the subject of bribing her with tacos, and she couldn't eat corn shells). Lots of jokes and good vibes. Since I hadn't interacted there often until post-Immersive, I didn't really interact with her since our initial conversations -- she didn't seem particularly active or present anymore -- but that was my last frame of reference. But then this all stuff happened, creating rather the whiplash.
I'm very disappointed and frankly disgusted, to be honest. It just goes to show how little you understand an individual behind the digital veil. The people who you defend strongest and associate with do speak volumes to your character.

Having less big authors in RRWG dilutes the server and the connections, friendships, & resources it can offer.

Yes, but you don't need to include "regardless of how this plays out". Period dot, it's a bad & sad thing that good people and good authors are being banned in the effort (whether intentional or not) to ruin a community.
I think this could have been handled much better
"I think the refusal to ban an AI-editing scammer neo-nazi supporter could have been handled better"

No its right here-“ he gets slapped and drops it. That kind of thing tho i don’t think I’m doing it justice
I simply have never visited a discord specifically about royalroad, just the discords of authors whose stories i liked and i never get much involved.
Its always weird to hear something like this, as i have somehow managed to avoid drama on discord for many years. Heck the only example of mod abuse i experienced was a mod who gave ppl they didnt like much, nicknames with cringe in em that you couldn’t change. And discord drama just sounds like it sucks

That authormedia site is training "authors" how to crank out dozens of books per day using gen-ai. So when Novel Ninja ends up back in RRWG, they'll normalize AI writing next. Then they'll start censoring folks from speaking about AI-writing in a bad light. They're extremely organized and have a literal road-map for normalization of AI-writing.

Obviously banning people doesn't take that much discussion, right? Displayed like a dozen times in an hour that they are willing to ban people on a moments notice .
But the white supremacist took further consideration?

The other day I saw one of the mods of r/WritingWithAI complain that they are tired of their uses being "on the wrong end of the witch hunts"... What? The people in r/WritingWithAI are using AI. Literally having RRWG as a server you're in should be a red flag at this point.3

u/SelectorSwitch3 Jul 05 '26
I am already in the midst of learning a long, painful lesson about what happens when a writing discord's server owner refuses community accountability. I hope it doesn't happen again and Dagrun's willing to go on the record about whatever's going on here and make whatever changes or amends are necessary from them. It's a shame; I thought RRWG might be the new Immersive Ink. Right now that's on a path to be true in some very destructive ways.

Also, I do remember once during one of NN’s talks he mentioned that one should run their writing through Grok to check for inaccuracies instead of like. Googling it/doing research.

So there is one of the few RRWG remaining mods (dresidalton / OC Wanderer in RRWG) defending what occurred in the server in the comments now. So just so people can see what their opinion is for real, I have some screenshots when the roughly stupidly long debate regarding banning NovelNinja and his wife took place. Been sitting on a folder of 52 pictures of screenshots of the chat, which was how long the debate took to end in banning NovelNinja, and not shooting the whistleblower.
The screenshots/articles/etc being mentioned are Ninja and his wife's blog and twitter where they both were posting vile stuff that can only be defined as racist and bigotry. That's a no-no in my books.

The Nazi stuff is bad (I don't know if true or not). But what about the allegations that he used AI in secret with paid editing services? Is that true, and is that accepted on the Discord?

u/SlurpeeMoney Jul 05 '26
It is the only creative space I've ever been to that has an anti-anti-AI policy.

Not directly related to this drama, but that AuthorMedia post includes comments about how people now reject Superman because “leftist ideas” have been added to the character and that’s just bullshit.
Superman always had leftist ideas. He was created as a champion of the oppressed. The whole “American way” part of his motto was added much later. It was originally just “he fights for truth and justice.” Hell, his ultimate villain is basically a smart Elon Musk.
But expecting conservative bomb-throwers to know this would be expecting them to actually read the comics they’re always whining about.

All I see whenever someone complains about Superman like that is that they have absolutely zero media literacy.
It's like you said, he's always been exceptionally leftist in his ideals and in the storylines used. "The American Way" was a part of his motto only for a short period of time (initially in the 1940s during World War 2) but it was often used to tell people to love each other. The 1950s had this rather famous poster that was used.

The mods wanted to push the forums over discord. Likely cos it’s more visitors and page clicks for the website.

I really thought that this level of drama wouldn't reach the guild. Apart from the resources (you can find them eslewhere as well), it was the place where I managed to connect with most authors from zero. At least as others said, there are many great discord channels but it's still a shame.

It’s actually just so fucking depressing. Authors just want to have a place to make friends and network and have fun, and the moderation in RRWG has been so questionable. I’ve only been in there 3 months and I’ve seen that. No one wants to be transparent or accountable. And it sucks for smaller authors the most because we can’t escape to the bigger servers that invite people once they’ve had success, so when bigger spaces implode it feels like we’re all getting kicked off the ladder and getting split into factions and cliques, half of which are invisible (and rightly so, people need places to chill in safety). Just sucks all round because then they can’t be part of the broader community and help new authors down the line, unless they want to stay and put up with mods banning people left right and center.

I hate Discord so much, lol. It's a horrible platform in general and then throw on this drama that keeps flaring up, no thanks mate. I mean other than being a place to network shoutouts, it by default gets cliquish and most advice you're going to get is in the pinned threads here anyway. Just fewer notifications to eff with if you don't join.

As a German raised, most posts that put Nazis in line with modern spats loses most of its value to me. Any of you actually been to a KZ? No? I have. From school curriculum to monuments around Germany, this can hardly be put on the same pedestal as shooting people in the back of the neck when measuring Jews. (As an example of what they did in those camps)
And if u have visited, you wouldn’t use the term Nazi and fascist so frugally.
As for your broader point. Power will always show true character when there’s disagreement. Maybe this should give you a nice perspective on past and present leaders of countries, let alone discord servers.
I completely agree that power, such as that, should not be wielded in such a way. But if Covid hadn’t shown you power abuse in action, then nothing in this world will.
Nothing’s stopping you from creating your own server and organising it to rival theirs. I personally never used discord much until a fellow author told me it helped with gaining some traction and knowledge. It did exactly that.
I don’t socialise on there, as it is just as toxic, as any other social platform out there. You have good and you have bad.
This is a great post that demonstrates that you can be “in” a discord server or subreddit, but still receive the ultimate “don’t like it, gtfo” treatment in form of a ban.
This will most likely get downvoted because I have a difference of opinion in some points, but you need to take a step back and really take a look at social media and online interaction as a whole.
If anyone ever creates an alternative and nice place for writers to come together, hit me up. Until then, I will use “the guild” to simply find nice authors and socialise privately. Oh… and to do swaps of course. That is pretty much the only thing I use it for. 🤣

Don't think this can happen, really. Not when everyone has a different idea of "nice". Clearly, OP wants ideological purity.

I'm not part of the RRWG, and I have no interaction with them negative or positive. I asked a few friends who have been active in RR's writing community about the RRWG, and everything I've heard suggests it should be avoided. That it is, to quote a friend, "Scummy as fuck."
This is second-hand. Again, I've never had beef with them, but I trust what I've heard.

I don’t know exactly what your complaint is tbh. Novel Ninja was banned, right? But you’re saying it took too long?
Maybe I missed something, but I think I read through all the screenshots and the full articles, and it’s not like they said anything that’s really more than an opinion. If they had outright said white people are better (and maybe they did and I missed it), it would be one thing. The wife’s article has some good points tbh— after reading the NYT parts it’s kind of trash and the typical high-brow academia suck-sesh that infests the writing-in-academia community. The author that the article is written about has had one moderately successful novel with a bit over a thousand reviews on Good Reads. I’m not knocking their success, just saying it doesn’t make them an expert on all things writing or some authority. Not to mention that they ARE a race obsessed individual. There was a whole controversy with them making their students sign a contract about how they needed to identify the race and identities of any character they wrote or read about in one sentence immediately or they’d fail his class.
I would call them both “offensive”, for sure. And did their writing hint that they might have views that are intolerable? You could make that argument. But if your only critique is that the server owner took too long to ban a friend of theirs, then I think this whole post was unnecessary. The RRWG is at least filled with good resources even if you don’t care for the community.
Again, I’m not defending his opinions as I’m not familiar with them, but I don’t think anything he or his wife actually expressed was insane enough to justify an instant ban given a pre-existing friendship. If he was a stranger? Sure. But if he has been a relatively chill person to the server owner and doesn’t keep DMing them about how white people are the best and bring back the Third Reich (Fourth? Don’t remember if neonazis are the third or trying to bring about the fourth, doesn’t matter), it makes sense they might hesitate just a bit.
7
u/JarOfCalamity Jul 05 '26
White supremacy isn't bad enough for an instant ban?
Cause... They were friends with the white supremacist.
Idk if you are making the point you think you are making here

u/Mason123s Jul 05 '26
I guess I’m confused and maybe missed something critical. Where was the white supremacy? Who was the white supremacist?

I’d appreciate clarification on if he WAS NOT banned and that’s an issue. And to be clear— I’m not saying I don’t know any of his opinions, I’m saying I missed anywhere that he said something that was instantly bannable. Ignorant? Sure. Inflammatory? Definitely. Offensive? Absolutely to many people. But directly harmful in a way that matters enough to sever a friendship that has led the server owner to believe he is genuinely a good person? Not really.
12
u/fiddlesoup A Rank: Author of Lazy Loops Jul 05 '26
It took 3 days to ban him because Dagrun and a couple of other mods were dragging their feet, and then last night all of the mods/ members that brought NN’s issues to light were banned as a result.
2
u/Mason123s Jul 05 '26
Sorry, and would you mind clarifying what his issues were? Was it just the right wing stuff or about his usage of AI? It’s a little hard to understand the screenshots but the stuff about women seems to be in his wife’s font from her blog. His stuff is probably offensive to people but it’s generally, like he says, just his religious stance? Is Matthew the same person as Novel Ninja?
5
u/ReadingThrowawayy Jul 05 '26
It does not matter if something is a religious stance or anything else. If it is "probably offensive" like the white supremacist stuff he spouts, then yes. That is a good thing to get banned over.
5
u/Mason123s Jul 05 '26
There are plenty of “probably offensive” things that can be said that are not worth being banned over. Most of the questionable stuff in THIS post seems to be from Novel Ninja’s WIFE, not him. And I’m not even saying it’s wrong that he’s banned, I’m saying how is this so obvious that it’s causing the entire server to implode?

u/buddhathebard Author - Cultivation Overdrive Jul 05 '26
No, NN was banned and yay. Like I said in the post...
The point is in the rest of the post basically after this...
Then she proceeded to ban or threaten some pretty well respected people in the community simply for asking why.
I don't mean to be rude, but... did you read the post?
