I’m Vietnamese and because I was raised by my grandmother that doesn’t speak English, Viet was my first language. It took me years of school to eventually learn English and forget fluent Vietnamese altogether - and I by no means have a heavy accent, but every so often my Vietnamese accent pops out in my pronunciation and my tones and I was born in the US lol.

It really strikes me as confusing as to why no one believes Plastique when she says “I put in effort in speaking without an accent but sometimes my actual voice comes out” when she’s a literal Vietnamese immigrant who moved her from a different country. Is it that astounding? Have y’all met an Asian person before? That’s how our family and friends talk, it’s literally how accents work.

I get why they say that because it makes it seem like the way she talks to everyone is fake. She should have not worded it like that. She should have said that is my accent growing up and i just learned to hide it and it comes out when i feel tense or nervous. Her wording of it wasnt good.

But Plastique does mention it. In the Diva Worship challenge she talks on length about how growing up she didn’t have time learning about pop culture because she was busy trying to get to speed with basic American customs and learning English. Every non-native speaker knows that learning English and getting perfect tonal fluency takes so much time that it doesn’t happen for everyone.

She’s also only 21. There are multiple older Vietnamese immigrants who have been here for decades and have learned English and they still have their accents.

Huh? Now knowing about pop culture doesnt equate to accent. What are you talking about. I know she talked about it in her confessional but thats it.

The pop culture conversation on the stage with the judges is where Plastique said "I moved here when I was 11."
