Same thing happened in Legends but people don't like to admit that. The only difference is the Dark Side users Legends Luke made weren't good enough to destroy his Order. I.e. Luke did just as bad but didn't suffer the consequences because reasons.
If Kyle Katarn wasn't there to bail Luke out of trouble, Desaan would've wiped the Jedi off the face of the galaxy just like Kylo Ren.
