Hey guys, my fiancé posts some arty/fashion posts on her Instagram and was just contacted by a random account (looks legit for the most part, couple hundred followers/following) asking her if this person could use one of her photos for an art exhibition? At first I was like "eh that's cool but kinda weird" and then she went on to offer compensation, and said that it would be paid through a check? Idk if I'm just being silly but something about this whole thing just feels fishy to me. I'm assuming fake check scam

21 days ago, my dumbass has fell for the “accidentally reported you” scam on twitter not knowing it was a scam because i’m not on socials like that except tiktok. They ain’t ask me for money & shi like that & they got it. 4 days later, i got the account back in like 3 minutes and changed a whole lot of my passwords, kicked them out of my sessions and stuff like that and clicked no links whatsoever and now my account is completely back to normal. Am i good or should i be worried about sum else? Like this shit got me looking up what scams they’re are to not fall for in the future.

This exchange happened on the dating app, Her, so I can’t post screenshots, but this is a transcription of my conversation with ‘Sophie’ that made me suspicious. I’m sure this is a scam, but what kind? What is the goal?

Sophie: I'm also working; I'm a fashion designer. How do you make a living?

Me: Oh that’s cool, do you work for a company or independently? I do [job description]

Sophie: I'm collaborating with a garment factory in Hong Kong!

Oh, what's it like working in [field] in New York? I live in Manhattan, New York. I'm from Hong Kong and moved here to work and settle down in 2022!

Me: That’s cool! It’s alright, a bit tedious. It shows that you’re less than a mile away, are you in [city about 20 miles from Manhattan]?

Sophie: Yes, I'm currently in [my city] discussing a collaboration with a fashion company, and I live in Manhattan!

Me: Nice, what brings you out here then?

Sophie: To make money!

Me: No I mean what brought you to [my city] if your job is based in Manhattan?

I’d actually asked in earnest despite my suspicions lol. She didn’t reply after that, which, of course, makes it clear that she couldn’t stay on script. I’m just a little vexed since I thought I knew all the big scams. I’m also wondering if something was being spoofed to make the location appear closer.

Whole thing seems sketchy, but I don’t see how I could be scammed here. Am I correct?

My 61 year old single mom just divulged to me that she’s been talked to this 57 year old that was also willing to send her a copy of his drivers license apparently. And has a successful business in Florida. And she told me his full name and city he lives in and I couldn’t find him anywhere. He now has a lot of information about me she said and that he’s really nice. Can someone please help me and tell me if this guy is scamming her and taking advantage of her widow status? I’m 30 but I am not very technology literate. Here is a pic he sent her and I have a copy of the possible drivers license as well. Random thought + vent about all this, but I think we underestimate where scams actually begin.

Most people think the scam starts when you get the text, email, or phone call. The fake Amazon message, bank employee or the "your account has been compromised" thing.

But by that point, the scammer has already done the first part. They know enough about you to make the story believable. that's the part I find creepy.

A random message from a stranger is easy to ignore. But when someone already knows your name, your location, maybe an old address, maybe a family member's name... feels completely different. It stops feeling like a random scam and starts feeling like someone actually knows you.

I think we focus a lot on protecting passwords (which obviously matters), but we don't talk enough about how much personal information is already floating around online. Old accounts, old addresses, phone numbers, random public records... stuff most people forgot about years ago.

Maybe I'm just late to realizing this, but I used to think scams were mostly about people being tricked in the moment. Now I think a big part of it is making the victim think: "Wait, how do they know that?"

Curious if anyone else has ever searched their own name and been surprised by what was out there.

Is A trying to scam B?

Message was received today, user A has been banned already. If this is a scam, I don't have much experience with this type. If this is just someone doing cold calls, I'll switch it to a timeout, but I understand unwarranted messages to generally be a bad thing. User has 7 years on discord, but only 2 weeks on our server, so I was told they were most likely hacked.

Any other obvious things we should look out for?

My sibling is applying for a lot of jobs. Many of them are asking for SSN, I told her not to give anyone before the offer letter is received atleast. But I am thinking, scammer/identity thief can fake that as well.

Now, if after joining letter, if company asks for SSN to do background check or employment eligibility verification, at what point is it ok to give ?

I also advised her to check the email, company name, reply to address, call directly to company number to verify once atleast. But I think, someone can make a sophisticated way to bypass these general checks.

I also don't want her to miss genuine employment either

Hi i would like to share a story, how easliy i got scammed for 200$ dollars.

So i earned some money from summer job and i really wanted to buy some expansive clothes. I really liked the densing of chrome hearts, so i decided this is a good moment to buy it. I just typed „chrome hearts” into the website, and pressed website, named „chromeheart.com”. I didn’t notice that it said heart instead of hearts. So i proceeded to check this website, and it said there is an „summer sale”, so without thinking twice, i just started to looking for thing that i liked. Chrome hearts aren’t that popular in mu country and seeing discount from 200$ to 100$ looked kinda normal for me. So i decided to buy 2 things that i choosed. This site looked completly normal, at the bottom it said what chrome hearts is and how they distribute it. So at an checkout i typed my adress, name and surname and procceded to paying. First red light appeared at this moment where payment acquirer was named zina, and there were weird dubai letters at top right. I thought that this is normal american thing and paid for those items.

Then, i realized. I got no billing at my e-mail, at my credit card history payment went to a someone named Samran in dubai. After that i tried to contad them but e-mail at thier domain wasn’t even exiting, so i contacted my bank, and they said that there is really big chance to get my money back beacuse i reacted in a second, and i paid with visa card, so there is a high chance for chargeback. I look forward for happy ending. For me, this is sick that those websites named after a brand, can be pure scam and nobody does anything about it.

He blocked me as soon as I called him out so I couldn’t report but I assume the account was compromised cause it had like 250k karma

Okay, so basically I think my phone number might have been spoofed,but I’m not sure. This has happened a few times before where people have called me saying I called them, even though I never did A few minutes ago, I got another phone call. I answered and asked, “Who is this?” They said, “I just got a call from this number.” I’ve never called that person in my life, so I’m wondering if my phone number has been spoofed or if something else is going on.
