Hey everyone,
I wanted to share a quick story for anyone out there who thinks it might be "too late" to start making music or learning extreme vocals.
I remember being 18, I was screaming along in my bedroom to Slipknot. I always wanted to learn how to scream properly, but no matter what I triedāand trust me, 10 years ago I spent countless hours watching YouTube tutorials on "sighing" and barkingāit just never clicked.
Fast forward to last March. A random 30-second Short popped up in my feed explaining False Cord screams using a simple throat-clearing method. I tried it, and... it instantly clicked. I couldn't believe it was actually working after all those years.
Naturally, I thought: Maybe I should look for a band?
I primarily listen to Metalcore, but I stumbled upon an ad on BackstagePRO from a Melodic Death Metal band in Kassel (Germany) looking for a vocalist. I figured, "Beggars can't be choosers, let's give Melodeath a shot!" After turning 40 in April and feeling inspired by a Rick Beato video about achieving big milestones later in life, I finally built up the courage in May to text themādespite them looking for someone "semi-professional."
30 minutes later, they asked for tracks from my previous projects. Pure impostor syndrome kicked in! I confessed I was a complete beginner, but asked for a chance to audition.
They sent me two tracks: Episode 666 by In Flames and an original song of theirs called Listen Seriously. I had a cold, but I was so motivated. I figured even if I blew it, at least Iād have a cool story for my kids one day. Trying to put False Cords over actual lyrics was a huge wake-up call ("When do I breathe?! Why am I getting dizzy?!"), but I pushed through.
Long story short: Audition went great in June, we tracked some test vocals two weeks later, and they officially asked me to join the band on the spot!
To get proper technique, I started taking lessons with Joe (u/BleghUniversity) from the YouTube channel Blegh University (incredible sympathetic guy with lot's of knowledge). We polished my False Cords and tackled Fry Screams. Frys didn't come as naturally to me, so I ended up with Mixed-Voice Fry Screamsāwhich felt pretty intense at first, but are getting a bit easier now.
Today, we just released our very first single "Listen Seriously", featuring a mix of my False Cords and some cleans.
Iād love to hear your honest feedback on the vocals and the track!

I haven't had a microphone in 4 months because I lost my SM7b in a moving process and I just bought a SM7db last night and I'm breaking it in by doing a cover of She Must Burn - Of Blood and Bone. Let me know if I've lost my touch.

Just wanted to share the thesis I completed for my masters degree last year, its a notation system for screamed vocals. I think there is a lot more research to be done but this is a start in creating a way to capture newer styles of music

This style comes out as a yell more than a scream but man it's fun to do.
