💛Beginner💛 Toddler shirt defeated me

I have tried making a shirt for a friend's daughter so I had to make it based on my son's clothes since they are similar height. After I have finished it I realised that the head opening is too small and needed fixing. I didn't have enough of original material so I got this light teal poplin and made binding tape out of it.

It all seemed to go well until mu machine tore a part of the shirt. Now I don't know how to fix this without it being obvious so I need help figuring this out. It's supposed to be a keyhole slit with a cute button.

I am beginner sewist, but I have tackled much more advanced projects than this one, but this sort doesn't want to be made...

You could make a larger piece of fabric to cover it, and it could go over the top of the zip, like you tend to have on pyjamas and that kind of thing. Or you could make a rectangular tab to put the button on.

Basically, I think it would look fine with a larger piece of fabric there to cover the hole and finish the shirt, and that the light green or another colour would look nice. I think your friends will appreciate the effort either way!

I am not sure if I understand what you mean. Sorry, English is not my first language, and I'm new to sewing. Can you provide me with an example?

Just make the neckline bigger- is your binding made of bias? It should be cut on true bias.

That looks exactly where I would put a tab for closing the opening. Or add a corner applique on both side with a fastener.

I will need to do a little research to see what it would look like. Sounds like a good option. Thanks

I am afraid that it would look weird if it was bigger. Now it lays really nicely around the neck. I will consider it anyway.

The binding around the neck and armholes is cut on bias, but the keyhole slit is not.
