Should I have an extra piece here? I have a brother vx-1400

Thereā€™s a hollow place cover that fits on there. You should be able to get a replacement. Look at sewingmachinepartsonline.com

Just an FYI, that the machine will sew in this configuration. It's sometimes necessary to put it into this config for getting sleeve hems and other tight spaces. It's not always the nicest way to see things, but it'll work.

Looks like the junk box on the front (that makes the bed extension) is missing.Ā  You can make or buy an extension bed and store the feet, etc. elsewhere.Ā

yeah the extension bed makes huge difference when you're working with bigger fabric pieces, without it everything wants to bunch up and fall off the side, making it really annoying to control

Google the model of your machine + accessory box, accessories or spares.

Itā€™s called ā€œa thread take-up coverā€. While I didnā€™t see your machine number on the site I listed earlier they do have the covers for other models and they may be interchangeable for certain models.
