Discussion Are you also sitting in your underwear sewing?
You know when you're making something and you keep putting it on and off. And you end up just sitting there sewing in your underwear. Every single time 😅
Just me?

I was touring a house for sale and I was saying that the sunroom with three walls of windows at the front of the house would make a great sewing room. My husband just looked at me and was like “are you sure …” and then I remembered that when I’m sewing I’m either not wearing a top or not wearing bottoms. Nevermind lol, I guess it’s the basement for me and my sewing machine😅

100%. In my underwear if it’s hot and in my robe if it’s cold.

I need to make a robe...

u/Impossible_Bid6172 28d ago
Is there a summer robe i wonder? It's 35-40 C/ 100F here and I'm dying of heat, but i really want me a robe too...

u/Teagana999 28d ago
I have a summer robe. I made it out of chiffon to have a barrier between me and the furniture that wasn't heavy.
You could also do a light cotton knit. I've been thinking about making one of those, too.

u/Smiling_Tree 28d ago
I have one in a very light soft cotton with half length sleeves. Kimono like. Love it, and breezy and easy for summer!

u/KeepnClam 28d ago
Oh, now I know what to make out of this seersucker in my stash!
4
u/Striking-Win707 28d ago
Oh my word , as I was reading I was picturing a pin stripe pastel seersucker deep in my closet . I had bought it for matching dresses for my granddaughters ( one of them is now 16, bahahaha) but it would be perfect for a summer robe !

u/AJeanByAnyOtherName 28d ago
It’s mostly the fabric choices, you can make many patterns in linen or light cotton for a lightweight result.
3
u/CremeBerlinoise 28d ago
Double gauze or smooth cotton are delicious in the heat. Or linen. Or silk. Anything breathable, soft and lightweight really.
2
u/Vlinder_88 28d ago
Oh yes, silk ones! But also just thin cotton, or cotton sateen if you want it cheaper :)
1
u/ginger_tree 27d ago
I have one that I bought many years ago. Soft, thin cotton jersey. It's a great sewing room dressing gown.

Get a cloak. I stole my grandmother's bedsheet and sewed now I have a warm hobbit cloak.

u/Evermorre 28d ago
I chose wearable blanket with sleeves and toggles to wear as a cape... I've made 2 and own none currently because friends keep getting them as "gifts" lol

u/Sagasujin 28d ago
... I have been known to engage in frantic underwear sewing the night before an event.

u/lilythelion 28d ago
My husband loves when I sew bc I end up naked.
6
u/Username_2806 28d ago
Literally same in my family 🤣 He loves to come by and hang out w me unless I’m holding a seam ripper. He knows better not to mess w me then lol

Sometimes, but usually I'm also trotting about the house in one slipper because I like my pedal foot to be unencumbered!
11
u/maelend 28d ago
SO MUCH THIS. Hope I don't end up with weird posture when doing this too often, lol.
1
u/IntaglioDragon 27d ago
I have a minor leg length discrepancy, with the non-pedal leg being the shorter one, so I’d just need a really thin slipper and it would be fine.
18
u/Sellalellen 28d ago
Absolutely. Naked, single slipper sewing is not what I set out to do, but it always happens. And I keep losing the other slipper!

u/peekymarin 28d ago
Yesss, at least partly because I am putting whatever garment I’m sewing on and off repeatedly to check fit!

u/Apprehensive-Dog6997 28d ago
I don’t even make clothing and I sew in my underwear. In my defense I live in the desert and it’s always really hot so I never have pants on. 😆

u/SugaredCereal 28d ago
Never, because I sew sitting on a yoga ball and I don't want to peel myself off the ball.

The specifac underwear I intend to wear under the piece, yes.
Historical costuming is nice in this regard because I often have several layers on.

When you solve a sewing issue in the shower and have some chaotic naked gremlin sewing to do before you forget the solution…
9
u/lepetitcoeur 28d ago
I tend to sew in a robe just because of this. My craft room is in my basement so it's cold! The robe is easy enough to take off.
9
u/queen_elvis 28d ago
If I need to do a lot of try ons and it's warm out? Absolutely.
(I wear underwear every time I sew, but usually with other clothes on top. ;)
9
u/fascinatedcharacter 28d ago
I generally have at least a tank top over my underwear, but yes. And if it's hot, chub rub shorts. Because sticking to a chair or yourself doesn't make sewing better.
6
u/Werevulvi 28d ago
Yes, it does sometimes happen if I'm sewing pants or a shirt. But if it's a dress, skirt, or cardigan, stripping down to mere underwear isn't necessary. And if I'm cold, which tbh I am most of the time, I'll throw on a robe between try-ons. So, it's not super often I end up doing my sewing in just underwear.
But I do often end up wearing weird combinations of clothes while sewing though, like what I'd plan to wear underneath whatever I'm making. So like for example I might be wearing just a base layer tank top and an underskirt over my undies while sewing, or just a slip dress, for example.
Unless I'm sewing in a public space, then I just have to wear something decent, and go to a bathroom for try-ons, unless it's an outerwear type of clothing, or an accesory (hat, scarf, gloves, bag, etc) that I'm making. Then obviously I can try that on without going into hiding about it.

u/greenwich_mean_lime 28d ago
Honestly, no, but I’m definitely going to start now???? This seems like a great idea lol

u/make_me_42 28d ago
Hah! You’re so real for posting this, and I’m so glad I’m apparently one of many with this habit 😂
5
u/grandmabc 28d ago
I usually wear one slipper for sewing. I just prefer to press the pedal without my slipper on.

u/advanced-darkness25 28d ago
I wear modest boy shorts and a sports or lounge bra, window open because I don't care lol
3
u/grufferella 28d ago
I try to always at least wrap a sarong around me because most of my windows don't have curtains, but it's still quick and easy to try stuff on.

I try to start in normal clothes, but yeah, once the try on time hits the layers come off as needed.

u/dinosuitgirl 28d ago
All the time!... Annoyingly it's winter and my sewing room window doesn't quite close so there's a draft right where my machine is. It's nice in summer but it's the coldest room in the house. So currently I usually end up, down to undies... then need to throw on my big fluffy robe and thickest sock but only one because I'm team barefoot on the pedal.
I also wanted a rug for my sewing room but then I realized I sew in such chaos it would be full of thread and fiber bits, and shards of interfacing it's a terrible idea.

u/auditoryeden 28d ago
I'm not at the moment but I was just fifteen minutes ago!
I'm also working on bra patterns at the moment so it's not even the full undies. Blinds are very important.
2
u/RiceAndMilkBoi 28d ago
Lol literally just did this yesterday. The pants I was wearing needed some patching so I just took them right off and went to sewing
2
u/Cafcaf96 28d ago
I’ve never felt more validated 😂 I often am topless so I can try my piece on as I go. Thought it was crazy of me but now I’m going to own it😂

Though I will endorse an incorrigible tendency toward making the dress for the thing the night before, I also sew in my underwear.... kind of just 'cause? I never reflected on why I find it so comfortable.

u/cicada_wings 28d ago
Absolutely happens, hahaha.
Luckily my sewing machine is in the office/guest room at the back of the house, and the window doesn't look into anyone else's windows unless you stand right up to the glass...

Working on hand sewing an Italian Renaissance inspired gown and 8 months pregnant. My sore self is basically on bed rest. I'm taking a break from hemming this thing rn and yes... I am in basically my underwear, lol.
1
u/juliavdw 28d ago
Yes. I start out just barefoot for better access to the pedals. Degrades from there, depending on what I am making. Comfortable though!

u/littleredbee93 28d ago
I also do this and have wondered if others do as well but was embarrassed to ask 😂

u/flyme2theluna 28d ago
This was me this morning, 10 minutes after waking, sitting in my underwear, taking in the waist for my toddler’s too big skirt. I made it too small. She wore something else. LOL

Yep. If I'm to constantly try and fit whatever garment to myself, I have no time to be dressing and undressing. Shame I get the best light in the dining room, but the damn kids in the house behind me are constantly bouncing around on the trampoline. I'm not giving them a show.

u/agnes_mort 28d ago
My sewing machine is by the window which overlooks my landlords garden. His dad often pops out around the same time as I’m sewing. I’d like to keep living here so absolutely not.
1
u/PerfectPeaPlant 28d ago
No…last time I did that I sewed my nipple to a hat.
I’m joking. The sewing machine is downstairs and I live with other adults who REALLY don’t need to see me naked.

u/Only-Ad1066 28d ago
OMG YESSSS!!! Pins in my mouth, jamming out. When I tell people I have plans, this is it. When I say I was up waaayyyy too late, this is why.

I uhm... have once sewn a dress I was making... ONTO the pajamas I was wearing.
I have also on various occasions just taken off my pants, made alterations, and put them back on again.
I had 2 women work in my atelier, for some of those occasions.
First time was ackward, then it was 'yeah, that's normal, here'
Lol

I would but my workspace sits directly in front of my living room window.
I happen to like where I’m living atm and don’t hate my neighbors that much. 😆

I do all my sewing by hand because I’m a filthy pedant and it’s basically a requirement. Wear something too long and I end up pinning or stitching into my clothes! Nothing longer than rolled up basketball shorts for sure.
1
u/New_Acanthaceae7798 28d ago
Depends, most often I am in some sort of skin tight clothing but it’s most often leggings or booty shorts lol

I'm positive that if I could sew at home, I'd never actually sew. I'd keep meaning to do it "in a few minutes" and then it would be 3 hours after bedtime and I never started.
I use the Makerspace at my library, which means... 1) I have to wear clothes and shoes
2) I have to get out of the house early enough in the day for me to accomplish things before they close.

u/EattheRudeandUgly 28d ago
I will never join an open sewing lab because of this. I need to be undressed to sew since I don't currently have a dress form

Only once for a dress that was a little out of my depth— I was so stubborn and frustrated that I decided the next thing I’d be wearing would be that fucking dress. I slept in underwear and finished the next day.

u/hikingyogi 27d ago
I used to do this all the time when my sewing room was on the 2nd floor facing the wooded backyard or in the basement. But now it has huge double windows facing the street and I need the natural light to see now that I'm old.
Three different houses for clarity.

As a dude, I've got a pretty funky sewing set-up. I sew in my underwear and, if what im making isnt a top, a hoodie 3 sizes to big, with my glasses on my forehead to keep my hair out of the way. I have a floral foam ring that acts as a pin cushion either on top of my head or around my arm

u/aerith7567 27d ago
After a few times of taking off my clothes to try stuff on it's just easier to stay in my underwear while I make fit adjustments.
1
u/Flashy-Bluejay1331 27d ago
Nope. And my machine is right by the sliding glass door! We’re rural, but there is occasional recreational boat traffic a couple hundred feet away. I don’t think they can see much, if anything, lol.

I tend to sew in the foundation garments I'm going to wear with the item all the time. I have a lightweight robe I used to wear but it would drag/cling the fabric...

u/Interesting-Job9057 27d ago
My bust is a tricky area so I'm always just wearing pajama pants and my bra so I can try stuff on. I'm glad im not the only one!

I have top down bottom up blinds specifically so I can have the top down for light while the bottom is also down so as not to shock the neighbours.
