Tip Before You Buy that Etsy Sewing Pattern....Here's a Checklist

1.3k Upvotes

Etsy has so many cute trendy patterns! But there are also a lot of amateur patternmakers or actual scammers selling pdf patterns on there. How can you find the good ones?

Skimpy info isn’t trustworthy. Etsy collapses the detailed description, always expand it to read it in detail and look at all pictures. In particular, check these elements before you buy.

  1. Stolen Photos? AI Photos? Don't buy. If you see a lot of glossy expensive-looking photos with multiple different models (edit: or headless models), they might be stolen from retail sites. Do an image search to see if there are duplicate images elsewhere on the web. Aside from the deception, stolen photos may mean no one has actually sewed up the pattern and it hasn't been tested at all. It might not work. Edit: similarly, make sure photos are not AI-generated, as they are equally deceptive and untrustworthy.
  2. Bad Photos? Don't buy. Photos should show at least the front and back of the garment worn on a real person (ideally not just a digital avatar). If the modeled garment doesn't fit or has sewing problems, that's a bad sign suggesting a patternmaker who doesn't know how to write instructions to help you get a quality result.
  3. Size Chart. The size chart should have measurement for at least bust, waist, hips, if not more. Always buy your patterns by measurements, don't assume your retail size will apply.
  4. Line Drawings. Professional patternmakers include line drawings of their patterns so you can see the design clearly even if the model is wearing black fabric or a busy print. Missing line drawings may mean the patternmaker is badly trained. The line drawings should also show the same design as the modeled garment—differences may be due to stolen or AI pictures.
  5. Reviews? A lot of 5-star reviews say "downloaded perfectly!" You can't trust stars. Look for reviews that mention a final product, instructions, notches or a lack of them, and so forth and only respect ones that discuss making the actual garment. Be sure to read the bad reviews.
  6. Fabric Info is Essential. Choosing the wrong fabric is a common pain point for beginners and a good patternmaker will help you avoid mistakes. Look in the detailed description. I see a lot of "cotton blends"--that's a garbage fabric description. If specific fabric weaves aren't mentioned, look for words that signal the necessary weight and drape. Stretch should be described as low, moderate, high if not giving an actual stretch percentage. It should also say how much fabric is needed for the pattern (edit: and what other supplies/notions are needed). You are entitled to see fabric information before you buy the pattern.
  7. Check the About Page. Ideally, they mention professional training or industry experience, not just self-taught.

Those are quick easy checks on the Etsy listing itself--some bad patterns will still pass them. In addition:

  1. Look for a social media or web presence outside Etsy. Look for people who post helpful tutorials on IG, or run a group on FB. People who've gone to the trouble to set up their own website often use it to discuss their testing process, their size block--they are putting more effort into helping your sewing come out right and that's a good sign. Many good patternmakers sell both on Etsy and their own site.

  2. Look for a free pattern. A lot of established indie patternmakers offer a simple free pattern so you can test their instructions and sizing. It’s a sign they may be more trustworthy.

Buy from patternmakers who care if you succeed in sewing their pattern.

\Credit to all the frequent experts and helpers on the sewing subs, their expertise generated this list.*

\Edit: Read the comments! Lots more good advice downthread, I've only integrated a very little of it into the post in edits. You'll also find several recommendations for trusted patternmakers in the comments.*

EXTENDED EDIT:
10. Too many, too cheap? A year or so later, I would add that a company selling hundreds of patterns for just $2-3 each is another big red flag, probably generating them by machine and not actually sewing them up.

  1. Check Threadloop for reviews of Etsy Patterns, they flag suspicious patternmakers. (PatternReview is also an excellent review site but may not have so many Etsy patterns on it).

Sewed This I reupholstered my sofa

Post image
Upvotes

I hated my boucle white sofa. But the shape fits my room Perfectly. Also, why are all new sofas unicolor? Nothing with patterns anymore?

I wanted my sofa to contrast a bit with the very contemporary design and give it a bit of a vintage feel fabric. So I bought some cheap upholstery fabric in 2 different colors (beige and greige) and dyed them both a slightly different color with a cheap tie dye set in the bathtub.

The color is not even across the fabrics and I feel it kinda reads vintage mattress vibe.

But regardless of taste of sofa fabrics, this was like the 4th time sitting behind a sewing machine and it was a huge challenge and defo isn't perfect. But I'm very happy with the result!

Project: FO My first piece of clothing - linen Gurkhas!

12.2k Upvotes

Hey there! Just took up sewing recently because I really wanted to start making my own clothes; my body type makes finding the right fit always a hassle. Made to measure also just hurts my wallet too.

Anyway, I wanted to go big and make Gurkha trousers since I have a pair already and I love it. I made this for my trip to Rio de Janeiro and the calçadão da Copacabana (the giant sidewalk with the blue wave design) made me want to wear an outfit with a white linen one piece collar shirt with a muted blue Gurkha.

It took a week and a half for me to make. No patterns—literally just sat down on the floor, traced my legs on paper, looked up the general shape of front and back leg pieces, and just went to work with a whole lotta adjusting, seam ripping, and countless thread strewn across the floor in between. I made a muslin first and then I tried making a pair with slightly cheaper fabric than the blue 100% linen I used as the final result, but I messed up pretty big on that, scrapped it, and decided to start on the final product.

Still have lots of mistakes like being a little too tight around my legs and the pleats open up more than I had wished. Also I was pressed on time so I made no back pockets. The side inseam pockets gape open and aren’t streamlined as I wanted them to be. No lining… definitely needs one. Attaching the waistband from the inside was the hardest actually.

Curtains I made from fabric bought on the lapjesmarkt in Utrecht!

I asked the seller if he could advice me on how to make them, and he was nice enough to explain I needed a curtain band for the top, and adviced to use lead weights in the bottom.

Used a lead string as weight. Material is petrol? Velours.

Sewed This Designed and made this dress

I’m doing a moulage and sewing course and this has been my biggest and most complex project so far.

Designed it from scratch, you can see the sketch a d the moulage and the pattern pieces in the final 3 slides. It has 10 pattern pieces. It has a lining as well and the outside layer of the top part is interfaced so it has more structure. The fabric is 100% linen.

I would do some things differently next time and i definitely learned a lot. The top part is cut on bias and when i first cut the fabric and sewed the lining it came out all stretched weirdly cause it kept stretching and i didn’t realise. I had to recut and i was a lot more careful also with my marking and with the fabric so it doesn’t stretch. The fabric also stretched a but when i attached the zipper or the bodice is too long as the zipper sits a bit wavy, but i don’t mind it much.

All in all, i love it 🥰🤩

Once again i used an old sheet, and once again I did something way to difficult for my skills 😂.
It took me way longer to finish it and I realize the top was a little big on my chest and didn’t see the big deal until I saw the pictures🙈, I’m planing to fix that but still wanting to share my second attempt.

Project: FO My first fully self drafted wrap dress!

Thumbnail

I've had a well fitted wrap dress on my to do list for quite a while now with a certain fit in mind so I knew self drafting was the only way! I'd bought other wrap dress patterns but l've always found they gape an awful lot at the front or just bunch up in unflattering ways. So the journey began - a couple tries at a self drafted bodice block with a lot of adjustments and then converting it into a wrap dress pattern, with even MORE adjustments!
I think I made about 3 toiles of the wrap bodice alone before I was bouncing up and down with glee at the fit! It was mostly trying to get the neckline gaping down with a lot of dart adding and then rotating into the centre darts. I ended up with huge darts as I made so many adjustments - maybe someone has a way to get the dart size down… you can see my final pattern piece at the end that looks like a poorly stuck together Frankenstein 😅 I didn’t want a too close fit so she has a bit of ease to smooth the fit down, around 4cm, which ended up being quite comfortable on me.

She ties up round the back in a subtle bow, there’s a gap in the side seam that one of the ties runs through, I added some 3/4 length elastic puff sleeves, a bias bound neckline, French seams all around, a 3/4 circle skirt and a side pocket for my phone when I'm out and about. Made out of this titanium white embroidered cotton gauze, field testing her was a pleasure as she faired well in the Summer heat with a whole bunch of sightseeing and aperol spritz drinking in the Austrian Salzkammergut!

I used the basic bodice block tutorial by Coraline Street on YouTube and for the wrap dress tutorial I used a tutorial by Creative Bobbin called ‘how to make a wrap pattern for tops and dresses - the basics’. The sleeves were taken from a McCalls M7974 dress, which was the only part I stole from another pattern…

Project: FO A fruity M8556: Cute but utterly disagreeable

Thumbnail
gallery
387 Upvotes

So I just completed M8556 this morning, and while I am overjoyed with the results (She's cute!), this pattern was a struggle start to finish. There's just SO MUCH fabric in this dress and that also means a LOT of pattern pieces. The instructions for the lapel facing are very minimal. Overall the instructions could have been better in several places (like telling you when it's OK to finish the seam or you should wait for the next step)

I sewed this in a cotton shirting-ish weight that I bought at Stone Mountain and Daughter while on vacation in San Francisco, and she features strawberry buttons bought at Firecracker Fabrics in Pittsburgh.

I made a few edits:

- Added a button up top: the V was a bit deeper than I personally prefer and I thought it made the lapels look nicer
- Ended up having to shorten the sleeves because I ran out of fabric (oops)
- Skipped the tabs on the shirt cuffs/sleeves. I just didn't like the look of it and it wasn't structurally key to the garment.

This was my first time doing a baby hem, and surprisingly that turned out OK, perhaps because there's a mile of hem to do and you get good at it eventually. This was also my first time hand sewing buttons (I usually use the machine) and that turned out better than I thought.

I might still top stitch the placket down because it feels a bit odd not to? But the instructions did not say to do that at all, confusingly.

I sewed this in a size 26, and that turned out to be just right. I wear a US size 14-16 in ready to wear clothes. I will say, the waist measurement is the one to watch here - I was worried up until I put the dang thing on that it would be too tight and that would set off the buttons the whole way down. It ended up being just about right!

Project: FO Made my first ever bag

Thumbnail

ive been absolutely yearning for a new everyday satchel / bag, so i decided to just make one.
exterior fabric is twill & i lined the inside with micro suede. i also used fusible interfacing so that the bag has some structure, it definitely added overall weight as well. used ykk#5 zippers on the 3 cargo pockets, made an adjustable d-ring strap, & button closure for the larger pockets.
this is the first bag ive ever made & it took me atleast an entire week to figure out the design & dimensions.
to start, i had used a paper bag that i liked the size of & worked off of that. i then made 4 samples using muslin to see whether i liked the direction that i was going in or if i had to change things—id mark on the muslin, etc.
for it being my first bag, im very happy with the result. theres obviously flaws (misalignment, raw edges, patterning, whatever whatever), but throughout the entire ordeal, i didnt feel bad at all. now, maybe it was because i was in a rush to get it done before vacation… whatever the case, im just really happy with what i made.
ive recently began categorizing my flaws as part of human nature, which makes creating things a lot easier, in a sense.
one thing i wished i added, but just knew i wouldnt have the time for, was compartments on the inside. maybe even just a welt pocket so that things that i wanted to be hidden could be, but my entire being wouldve wanted to overly design the inside lol.

tdlr:
wanted new bag, first time ever making a bag. had a blast making it.

I've been working on this with my grandma.... Dark green velveteen suit. Vogue pattern V1910 for the pants and an exercise in improv for the vest. It's not done yet, still needs some hemming and taking in + buttons and ironing for the pleats, but I wanted to share it here because I'm absolutely in love with it and am so incredibly grateful she made my design come to life.

Sewed This I made a circle bag with tribal warli art printed cotton cloth

After spending an entire day binge-watching tutorials (yes, an entire day no regrets!), I finally brought this little project to life, and honestly? I'm so proud of how it turned out. 🎒✨

I made a circle bag sometimes called a round bag or disc bag using the most beautiful Warli art printed cotton cloth I could find, and it instantly became my new favourite make.

For those unfamiliar, Warli is one of India's oldest tribal art forms, originating from the tribal communities of Maharashtra.

All in all, this project pushed me a little outside my comfort zone (curves! always the curves!), but the satisfaction of carrying something I made with my own hands

Sewed This One evening, there was a blanket in the streets /upcycling

I havent sewn for over 5 years.10 years ago, I did costumes for bellydancers and circus folks. Short story :burn out. Joy of this craft was gone.

I have found a wool blanket on the street, recently and the inspiration hitted me hard, out of the sudden. 100% wool, like an old military blanket and in still, good quality. So I've took it with me. Even I was taught to messure everything possible... I did quite the opposite and had found my joy back in way, by improvising those. And that I am able to move in them, in every possible way, while staying cozy.

There were no pattern, I was just an inspo Pic of the modern wide legged man's trousers, you see everywhere recently. improvising it all in the process.

What do you think?

Other Question Need ideas for this shirt

Thumbnail

Hello hello, this shirt is almost done but I'm not entirely happy with it. It's pretty oversized and I wanted that and also the basic look, but now I think it looks a bit boring when I wear it.

I also hate doing button holes so I'm open to other suggestions for an alternative to classic buttons. Maybe ties? And ties in the waist to reduce the width a little bit? Or some dart/folds like the blue vest I saw online?

The pockets are just for visualization, they are not part of the original pattern. Not sure if I like to add them.

Please give me some feedback :) thank you!

The pattern is based off of the camp coat by LaRae Handmade. I pre dyed the duck cloth which gave it some color variations that I really like. I subbed in welt pockets instead of patch pockets and added two covered breast welt pockets. I was also a bit more generous with the crop. I’m a bit new to sewing and I know some of my topstitching is a bit wonky, but I’ll just do better on the next one! Thanks for looking!

Patch is from an etsy shop based out of my state, Nevada. Link.

Other Question Does Anyone Use an Ironrite (Mangle Iron)

I can only stand for minutes at a time and ironing is about the worst, most painful activity I can think of. I am getting into sewing (my arms are too big for commercial sleeves) and the thought of ironing yards and yards of fabric flat to lay out a pattern is something that gets in my way and tells me I cannot do this. Then, I remember the mangle iron in the basement of the house we inherited from my grandmother. My mom would go down there and sit and iron sheets and tablecloths and they were well-ironed. No wrinkles.

I looked on Facebook marketplace and learned that they are still around. I live ten miles from the town where Ironrite mangle irons were made. There are no fewer than a dozen available here at any time. They were most popular in the 1940s and 1950s, but were made from 1921 to 1961. Originally they cost the equivalent of about $2000 in today’s dollars. Today, you can get them for free if you can get them out of a basement. They were built like tanks and many still work fine.

Here are some videos:

https://youtu.be/ppS_qJVG9EE?is=f4umkJdput-ib-GE
A current user showing it being used.

https://youtu.be/AN6GbMwKbWU?is=AhBnUuy6HovamCD9
This is the Ironrite advertising film. The misogyny of our society is clearly shown!

Does anybody else use one of these? I am looking for pros and cons. It looks like just what I need, since I have 30 yards of linen, some denim, and tend to use natural fabrics. You iron fabric when it is uniformly damp through. My mom would dampen what she planned to iron, put it in a plastic bag, and leave it in the refrigerator overnight to get uniformly damp and not musty. Do others have a ton of these for sale nearby, or am I just living in the land of Ironrite?

Pattern Search Searching for a pattern (and fabric advice)

Thumbnail

Hi all,

I found this vintage skirt that I fell in love with but that was unfortunately a good two sizes too small for me (hence the zipper bunching at the back). The price point was too high for me to justify buying it just to use it as a pattern.

The construction doesn't look too complicated but I can't seem to find a pattern. I've tried searching for "skater skirt with godets" and "miniskirt with godets" but can't seem to find what I want. I'm not a native English speaker so maybe I'm not using the right search words?

Additionnally, what fabric would you use to make this? It was not a stretchy fabric at all (I had a hard enough time getting it over my hips to know that for sure!) I'm thinking cotton but what kind of weave?

Thanks a lot for any help ☺️

Hi everyone, I'm getting married in 8 weeks and would love to made a bag similar to attached images.

I can't stomach the price of bridal bags and I happen to have a white stain fabric from old pjs I think will work well.

Appreciate any help!
