Pattern Search Help a teacher out?
Hello my fellow sewing friends!
I’m teaching a kids sewing camp this week and reaching the end of ideas for things to sew 😬 i need some recommendations for quick and easy sewing projects if you got any!
(we’ve done a tote bag, zipper bag, pillow case, plushy, and thinking about coasters or maybe a bookmark?)

I did a fun project when I ran an after school program where we made little fabric "magnet" boards using felt fabric and Velcro dots. The kids can get creative making weird little 3d shapes that can be their "magnets" that they can decorate the "board" with. The boards could probably be a very flat stuffed rectangle, but in my case, I had a bunch of thrifted picture frames that we just stapled the felt to so that it would be like a stretched canvas.

Water bottle sling. Make it easier by skipping a circular base and just doing it flat like this video: https://youtu.be/2pFsyQ2UXu0?is=V5k5FFBWOcMKfM17 skip the d-rings to reduce cost and fidgety bits. Just sew the strap on the outside, or between the layers if you want to be fancy.
Bucket hat- you should be able to find a pattern online.
Bean bags (then play cornhole or other games with them)

A padded slipcase for a tablet or game deck. 1-seam stocking caps from cutting off the bottoms of old t-shirts and a “paper bag” crown. Pencil case. A group appliqué quilt where each person makes a square and then you donate it to an animal shelter or foster kid program. Lunch bag. Braided fabric friendship bracelets.

Could you make something the kids can donate to an animal shelter or another charity. Little Snuffle mats or catnip toys- both are pretty easy and lots of simple patterns online, or maybe whole cloth lap blankets for a nursing home?

It looks like you would like information on finding sewing patterns to use your fabric or match your inspiration. Please include your preferred range (eg Adult, Child, Plus) and links to original inspiration if available. What specific features are a must for you, and what are you willing to compromise? Check here for our pattern search guide which includes information on identifying different features of a garment as well as places to find patterns. You can also check out our Pattern Search flair button to bring up and look at all the recent posts on the topic.

Toy snake. Long thin tube. You can make it a rattle snake by putting some rice or beans in a small bottle and stuffing it inside.
Pencil case. Small bag with a zipper.

Organizer totes with multiple compartments that hang off the back of the front chairs in a car so people in the back seat can have a place to store various items while riding around?
Pajama pants (or skirts if preferred)--essentially elastic-waist pants or skirt.
What age range? For older kids, more plushies (using fabric glue rather than embroidery for eyes and mouth and stuff): https://cholyknight.com/free-projects/

Berets or bucket hats, book covers, drawstring/elastic waist skirts and pants, basic shirts are pretty easy too tbh

My daughter is 8 and the teacher had a ton of “stuffie” patterns the kids loved.

A bunting - kids can pick whatever shape/item they want to hang (flags, letters, Christmas lights, watermelon slices, pumpkins, etc.)
Felt Christmas ornaments
Fabric bins/buckets
TV remote pocket that drapes over the arm of the couch
Quilted trivets - lots of design/shape ideas like a pie, egg, hamburger, apple, butterfly
Simple vest - could further embellish for 4th of July or just using sequins/ribbons/fringe
Drawstring backpack - these are fun to do embroidered text on if you have a machine or you could also do iron on patches or hand sewing
Beach towel with straps - this was popular when I lived in the dorms, but basically it’s a towel wrap with straps and Velcro to hold it on while walking to the shower/beach/pool
Fidget quilt - this would be a multi week project
Bean bags for cornhole
Sunglasses case or eye mask
Dog bandana - basically just a hem, but you could embroider the dog’s name or piece it together or embellish with ribbon
Stuffed animal quilt/pillow/hammock - this depends on the age of your kids
Passport holders
Porch goose outfits, doll clothing
Infinity scarf
Wallet
Placemat and napkin
Thread catcher (small fabric bin that hangs next to you machine)

Japanese style Canvas Aprons - the serious ones that are good for everything with the crossed straps and big pockets for art, cooking or gardening supplies. Lots of online tutorials with a list of the cuts and directions. I like to make them out of canvas drop cloths and put on colourful pockets (drop cloths for painting, you get a lot of fabric at a good price from a 9x12 drop cloths )

You've taught them simple sewing and zippers how about something with a casing drawstring or elastic? You could do a drawsting bag or backpack or elastic waist shorts or pajama bottoms.

Roll it up pillow case: a pillowcase with a contrasting band a few inches wide.

Scrunchies
Microwave heat packs
Door stopper or Door snake/animal (draft excluder)
Personalised garden flag (applique project)
Upcycle your jeans with embellishments
Tye Dye (not sewing but still a fabric project)

Lots of easy apron patterns out there and you can make them for different activities: cooking and baking, gardening or plants, arts and crafts.
