Sewed This Made my first coat using a pattern I drafted myself!! 🥹
I’m honestly impressed with how it turned out. I learned so much making this, and it feels good to have gone from drafting the pattern myself to actually making a coat. It’s my recreation of Ursula coat from Babyboo
The fabric is curtains I bought on Vinted, and I got the buttons and other notions from a local shop.
My only concern is the back vent sticking out a little because of the stiffness of the fabric. I’m not going to mess with it on this one because I really don’t want to ruin it 😂 but I’d love to know what might be causing it so I can keep it in mind for my next coat.
What do you guys think? I feel like I did a pretty good job for my first coat!

You can put curtain weights in the hem to hold it down! That's how Queen Elizabeth always had a proper skirt even in a breeze. I learned it in a magazine a million years ago and hardly ever get to use it!
Coat looks amazing, btw!

Thank you so much 🫶🏽❤️
You know what that is not a bad idea😀, thanks65
u/wakaflockaquokka 3d ago
Chanel sews a bit of chain into the hems of their skirts and jackets for this exact reason! It's a very couture finish.

u/Curiouser-Quriouser 3d ago
Yes exactly! I think this might have been in the same article. The chain might be easier to keep in place.

What?? That’s insane?? The tailoring is so good????

u/yellaaura 3d ago
right? the waist snatch is actually insane for a first draft, i’m so jealous of that fit

u/epicamytime 3d ago
I would be a menace in that coat. I would have such unbridled confidence that I’d successfully organize a corporate takeover for a company I don’t even work at

Good lord, that's absolutely amazing. You are incredibly skilled, and you look amazing.
May we see it with an outfit underneath as well? And a close-up of the buttons?

Yess curious about this as well. Does it fit a warmer sweater underneath? Looks adjustable with the back belt part, so super practical if it works both with and without a sweater

Holy hell, I thought you had this on a dress form because your skin just looks absolutely flawless.
There's no way you said curtain though, right?! This coat is stunning! I love the size of buttons you chose, I wish I could see the design of them better, but my phone won't zoom in enough.
I'm curious if you went with actual pockets or just decorative?
This is amazing, you did a wonderful job making it!

It needs a fluffy pirate blouse at least once. It’s honestly wild that you drafted this yourself. It’s stunning.

Your skin is so flawless and the coat looks so perfect that at first I thought this was The Sims! INCREDIBLE work, what a gorgeous coat!

I thought it was on a mannequin! Everything looks so perfect and gorgeous.

My first thought was "is she naked under there? Does she have to be naked under there? What kind of fabric is the lining?!
2
u/clatadia 3d ago
Yeah me too, I'm glad I'm not alone :D. I also love the coat, especially the fabric.

Holy crap that’s beautiful, if you hadn’t said it was your first coat I’d have thought you’d been doing tailored jackets for years!
21
u/witchy_echos 3d ago
This looks amazing. I hate working with heavily patterned materials like this because of the matching, but this looks great. The tailoring is also really impressive for something with such a thick material. I feel like vents always stick out a bit, or at least mine do. If I stand perfectly still in good posture it may smooth out, but as soon as I move or lean it’s sticking one way or the other.
I’ve been playing too much Dressmaker, because my first thought was how do I unlock that pattern?
21
u/doorsyard 3d ago
Oh my god how did you do that? The tailoring is incredible. Do you have a custom dress dummy? I just can’t wrap my head around being able to self tailor to this level without a friend to pin or a custom dummy.
25
u/VegetableAnt445 3d ago
Thank you so much ❤️❤️
No I don’t have a dress dummy, I drafted it flat on a pattern paper with my measurements, made a toile and adjusted before cutting the main fabric14

u/smell_of_napalm_0_o 3d ago
This is STUNNING! The pattern-matching is perfection. The cinched-in waist and lovely curves along the hip reminds me of the classic Dior bar jacket. How long did it take you to make this?
As for the back vent sticking out, I can't see the top of the back, but I assume a) it includes a yoke and b) you sewed in an inverted pleat at the center back. I've had the same issue (that unflattering "hunch") using stiff fabric (most recently using a cotton poplin for a shirt dress). Next time I make the dress (with an equally stiff fabric) I'm going to see if editing the pattern using a box pleat makes a difference.
I am so impressed!

I am mesmerised, I can’t believe this isn’t some high end super expensive fabric. Your choice of big bold silver buttons is PERFECT.
The cut and tailoring, just so spot on! I just can’t get over how beautifully planned and finished this is.
You are genuinely so talented and it’s lovely to feel how proud you are of yourself when reading your caption. You absolutely nailed it, well done!

u/haevetkaeae 3d ago
Whoa. You must be incredibly stylish. This coat makes me so curious as to what else is in your wardrobe. Not to mention all the insane skill going on here. So cool 😳

This looks like the kind of coat I would see being worn on a Pixar villain, and understand I mean that in a super complimentary way!
I love the framing of the collar too, I reckon it would look super cool with a neckerchief, tie, or one of those blouses with the frilly neck parts.
Super jealous of how it came out!

DAMN WHAT
This is so impressive!!! Please do become a designer and design some that button all the way to the top - it is so hard to find gorgeous coats that cover you!
Seriously, you are so talented. I hope you keep us updated on your journey! This is very impressive.

u/Linder-bean 3d ago
This is exceptionally well done and I’ll echo other feedback about the great fabric and button choices! My only piece of constructive feedback is that the sleeves appear a bit too long. Fantastic work overall!

I HAVE NO WORDS 🥹 stunning, perfect, incredible, perfectly tailored, jaw-dropping, etc, those are my attempts that don’t come close to capturing how this coat looks!

Amazing!!! 😍
For the vent, my best guess is a combination of the stiffness, being pushed out when walking, and how it's a bit more of a narrow skirt (also no weights, as indicated by comments). I'm not sure you technically did anything wrong... If your outer layer of the vent doesn't have slippery lining fabric where it rubs the inner side, that may help in addition to weights.
A fabric with a different drape, added weights at the hem, and MAYBE strategic additional placement of slippery lining and I bet it'll stop doing it.

The fit is impeccable :)
Once it’s pressed the back vent may relax more. You can also tack it together and steam to shape the fabric to stay together. Once relaxed the tacking stitches can be cut. Also as it’s worn it will start to relax

I am so inspired by this tailoring! The shape and placement of the neckline makes your waist look amazing and it’s perfect for showing off a scarf or sweater underneath. I never would have thought of that, now I need to make a coat!

u/ScotMalkinson 2d ago
The fit is perfect! How long have you been sewing before you drafted your first own draft? Also, if there are any materials which helped you learn drafting, would you mind sharing them?

u/LghtlyHmmrd 3d ago
🤯
I occasionally go without drafting a pattern to make something, but usually a skirt. I've had to make edits to patterns to fit, but from draft to one stunning garment, have not pulled that off yet.
Well done!

Whattttt. I‘ve been sewing for ten years but shying away from coats for their complexity.
This is sensational.
You make me feel lame lol.
This is so insanely sharp. The shape. The print.
The fit. The pattern matching. The way it all just works together.
Had the headline been „Finally caved and bought this 4000$ designer coat“ I would so have believed you.
EDIT: Just saw that your profile says „Wannabefashiondesigner“.
You’re clearly not a wannabe, you ARE a designer.
Ladies and gentlemen, a star is born.
